  • Patent number: 7377214
Abstract: The bulk volume of large numbers of loose, separated, multiply bent, irregularly shaped scrap sheet metal is temporarily reduced, for transportation and storage of the metal for recycling purposes, by compressing the metal into temporary, compacted wafers formed of successively compacted layers. The apparatus includes a load chamber which is axially aligned with a compression chamber and a reciprocating ram which passes through the chambers towards an anvil plate which closes the discharge end of the compression chamber. A pre-determined quantity of loose pieces is placed within the load chamber. The reciprocating ram compresses the pieces of that batch into a thin layer. Successive batches are compressed into overlapping layers which are temporarily bound together, face-to-face, to form a unitary wafer, by temporarily bending and intertwining the peripheral edges of the layers. The layers are subsequently separated for recycling by depositing into a melt furnace.

Abstract: In this fastening system two or more layers of material are fastened together by inserting a hollow sleeved fastener such as a rivet or a bolt into the hole in a high interference fit to expand the hole radially. The sleeve is configured either as a collar and a straight shank or as an angled upper portion combined with a shank for counterbored applications. The intersections between either the collar and the shank or the angle portion and the straight shank are designed with an enlarged radius such that when the sleeve is expanded after the insertion of the fastener inside of it, this radius is expanded, which in turn stress coins the adjacent edge of the hole in the layers. This localized stress coining as well as the hoop stress in the hole surrounding the hole dramatically increases the fatigue strength of the fastened layers in a structure assembly.

Abstract: A method of making a plate cylinder for a web printing press in which a hollow cylinder with a conical interior is formed of ductile steel. Two nickel printing plates are formed to shape so that they will fit virtually exactly around the cylinder without joins between them being readily apparent. A cylindrical mould having two semi-cylindrical mould halves is formed with its inner diameter equal to the outer diameter of the plate cylinder being produced. One mould half is placed with its semi-cylindrical inner surface facing upwards and a printing plate is placed inside. Then the hollow cylinder coated with epoxy resin is placed on this plate, and the other printing plate is placed on the cylinder. The second mould half is secured to the first half, and a conical core is forced into the cylinder to expand it radially so that the plates are held under pressure against the mould surface. Then the mould is heated and the resin allowed to set under conditions of temperature and pressure.
