  • Patent number: 6374477
Abstract: After heat treatment for hardening the outer peripheral surface of the input shaft 15 is enforced, a straightening operation for straightening the bent portions of the input shaft 15 caused by the heat treatment is carried out prior to formation of the through holes 17, 17. After then, the input shaft 15 is machined using electric sparks to thereby form the through holes 17, 17 in the input shaft 15. In the present working method, there is eliminated the possibility that, during the straightening operation, stresses can concentrate in the through holes 17, 17 portions of the input shaft 15, thereby being able to attain the above object.

  • Patent number: 6357321
Abstract: A connecting rod includes an apertured connecting-rod eye portion defining two portions (arms), which is split into a saddle portion and a bearing cap portion by a fracture splitting operation along a desired dividing plane whose location is determined by formation of a separating notch on the connecting-rod eye portion which extends parallel to the desired dividing plane. In each of the arm portions, through screw-holes are provided for attaching the bearing cap to the bearing saddle. During the splitting operation, the fracture separation is initiated at the separation notch and progresses in two paths around the screw-hole. To inhibit misalignment of the two fracture paths as they come together, a hole is formed in the plane of the desired dividing plane and extending from the through-hole to a wall of the connecting-rod eye remote from the separating notch.

Abstract: A nib for a marking pen which has at least one, preferably two, grooves or valleys formed in the sides thereof which intersect a projection on an inside surface of the marking pen barrel for securing the nib within the marking pen. In the preferred embodiment, the nib is formed from flat strips of stock by forming two grooves down the center of the strip and subsequently cutting parallelogram-shaped nibs from the strip. When the nib is assembled to the pen, the projection intersects a first one of the grooves at a front of the nib, and intersects the second one of the grooves at the back of the nib. Advantageously, this construction provides for stable orientation of the nib within the pen and facile assembly, without the need for pinning or die cutting an irregular shape. In addition, the method of forming the nib allows for high throughput production.

Abstract: A receiving cavity having a simple geometrical shape is machined in a metallic block having a simple geometrical shape made of a first metallic material. A member made of the second material is made and fixed into the cavity to produce a composite bimetallic block, and the turbine blade is machined from the composite block, the body of the blade being machined from the metallic block made of the first material and the insert being machined from the member of simple shape made of the second material. The member made of the second material can be prefabricated and welded into the cavity of made by depositing and solidifying a molten metal in the cavity. The invention applies in particular to manufacturing a blade of a low-pressure stage of a steam turbine.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method of manufacturing a joint housing, in particular for vehicle track rods, having an integral shaft with an internal thread designed to hold a longitudinal pin, the housing being produced from a blank with a ball-like enlargement at one end. In order to ensure low manufacturing costs and low consumption of energy and materials, a longitudinal cavity with a diameter exceeding that of the internal thread and a length exceeding that of the threaded section is first produced in the shaft of the blank by rearwards cup extrusion and the diameter of the threaded section subsequently reduced to that of the thread core while at the same time shaping the surface of the wall to give a flat key face, the overall process being a cold-forming one. Finally, both the external and internal features of the housing are produced by heading, cupping, punching and forming to size perpendicular to the longitudinal axis in the region of the enlargement.

Abstract: The metal-to-metal sealing system includes a first seal configuration on one member of the connection and a second seal configuration on the other member. Each seal configuration includes an annular groove and an adjacent annular tooth. The annular groove and annular tooth form three frustoconical surfaces with the groove having an annular undercut surface and the annular tooth having an annular shoulder surface. A seal cylindrical surface and a pre-ramp cylindrical surface extend from the mouth of the groove and a frustoconical ramp forms the transition surface between the seal and pre-ramp cylindrical surfaces. Further, at the base of the outer side of the annular tooth, there extends a cylindrical surface along the main body of the member. Upon makeup of the connection, the ramps and seal cylindrical surfaces guide and align the seal configurations. Initially the center frustoconical surfaces interferingly engage.

Abstract: This invention relates to a method for manufacturing a plurality of longitudinally extending slots in the bore of a component (1). One example of such a component is the sleeve element of an automotive power steering rotary valve. More particularly the invention is directed towards a method of minimising burring of the slot edges of the sleeve component. The method comprises the steps of gripping the component (1) in a gripping mechanism (2) of a workholding device, performing a first cutting operation (5) in which the slot is cut in the bore by a series of progressively deeper cutting stroke of a cutting tool (5), further machining (30) the bore of the component, the machining of the bore being carried out while the component remains gripped in the gripping mechanism, characterized in that while the component remains gripped in the gripping mechanism the slot undergoes a second cutting operation (5) similar to the first operation.
