  • Patent number: 5161303
Abstract: An insertion tool to be interfaced with a turret-type punch press, or the like, to insert fasteners, such as captive or clinch nuts, into holes in a sheet metal workpiece. The tool includes a canister assembly having a plurality of guide rods on which the captive nuts are stacked. The nuts are loaded from the guide rods into respective holes in a rotatable planetary gear of the canister assembly so that successive ones of said nuts can be axially aligned with an exit opening of the canister assembly to be forcibly ejected therethrough by a punch assembly. The punch assembly and planetary gear are moved relative to the exit opening by a reciprocating cam enclosure which is connected to the punch assembly and to which an impact force is applied from the press. The reciprocating movement of the cam enclosure is transferred to the planetary gear to rotate said gear by way of a motion translating assembly including a rotatable cam that is coupled to and rotated by said cam enclosure.

  • Patent number: 5155892
Abstract: Hydraulic cylinders each comprising a hollow cylinder casing, a ram, and an annular seal are assembled automatically by a mechanism that stores and feeds seals, ram and casing members into separated axial alignment and then axially moves the components together until they are assembled. A tapered mandrel protects the inner surface of the seal from abrasion as it is fitted over the end of the ram, and a tubular insert with collapsing finges guides the ram and protects the seal from abrasion by the end of the casing as the ram is fitted into the casing. An automatic cap threading machine threads a cap in the open end of the casing after the push rod has been assembled in the casing. Retractable support means are provided for certain of the components in order to permit an assembly mechanism to fit over the components and move them along an axial path.

The method includes driving a punch through the female element into a panel supported on a die member forming an unsupported cone-shaped panel portion in the cavity of the die member. The punch includes an axially extending piercing end which pierces a small opening in the cone-shaped panel portion and an arcuate drawing portion which is driven against and through the panel opening, enlarging the panel opening. The annular riveting portion of the female element is then driven into the cone-shaped panel portion and through the panel opening, drawing the panel portion into a tubular shape engaging the external surface of the riveting portion. Finally, the riveting portion is driven against a center post of the die member, radially outwardly deforming the free end of the riveting portion and forming a mechanical interlock with the tubular panel portion.

Abstract: An apparatus for picking up, transferring and placing components by means of a transfer mechanism and a disk-shaped carrier (14), which is rotatably journalled on a carriage (8) and is provided on the lower side with a helical guide track (24) with a cam profile (25). The components (V) to be processed are arranged on the carrier (14) according to a helical line equal to the guide track (24). A supporting carriage (10) is provided with a follower element (16) and an arresting pin (18) which cooperate with the guide track (24) and the cam profile (25), respectively. By a periodical indexing movement of the supporting carriage (10), the carrier (14) is displaced stepwise in the direction of rotation and the direction of translation, as a result of which the components are taken one by one to a given pick-up position.

  • Patent number: 4832555
Abstract: A gasket holding and feeding magazine is described which includes a plurality of similar, adjacent compartments, each of which is sized to hold a single gasket therein. The magazine is moved over a stationary floor plate within which is formed a bottom opening of size to permit a gasket to drop therethrough. As each compartment of the magazine is moved into registry above the floor opening, a gasket will drop through the opening and will be directed to a lower gasket holding and clamping plate. The clamping plate securely holds the gasket to allow a belling mandrel to be inserted through the clamping plate and to secure the gasket. The mandrel will then automatically pick-up the gasket as the mandrel is advanced relative to the clamping plate whereby the gasket will be automatically inserted into the pipe end during the belling operation. Upon completion of the pipe bell and cooling of the belled end, when the mandrel is withdrawn, the gasket will remain encapsulated within the belled end of the pipe.
