Patent number: 8939054Abstract: An improvement of a folding knife locking mechanism with an adjustable wedge to remove blade slop. The present mechanism allows for smooth opening and closing of the blade by limiting friction against the blade as it rotates. This knife has a bearing system for low friction blade rotation. Also the leaf strap lock is arranged so that it only comes into contact with the blade at the start of opening and at the end of opening, further limiting the friction forces against the blade. Provided is also an adjustment wedge to remove blade lock slop. In the manufacturing process loose tolerances can be adjusted out using the adjustment wedge. Normal use wear against the stop pins and handles can cause some looseness of the blade which can also be removed by the adjustment wedge.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2012Date of Patent: January 27, 2015Assignee: Buck Knives, Inc.Inventors: Grant Woodrow Hawk, Gavin D. Patent number: 8732956Abstract: A safety mechanism for a utility knife is provided to prevent more than one retraction of the blade shield for each trigger actuation. A separable linkage extends between an actuator and a strut, and has a seat member and a deflecting member that are linked together when the actuator is not depressed and the strut is in the safety position blocking the retraction of the shield. The separable linkage is configured to transmit the pressing action of the actuator to the strut to disengage it from the bracket. The separable linkage is configured to delink as the shield retracts. If the actuator continues to be pressed in after the shield returns from being retracted, the safety mechanism prevents relinking of the seat member and the deflecting member, due to the deflecting member being deflected away from the seat member in a substantially longitudinal direction.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2011Date of Patent: May 27, 2014Inventors: Aaron Paul McGushion, Earl Votolato, David A. Patent number: 8595941Abstract: An assisted-opening knife has a spring tied to a front of a blade carrier and a movable slider assembly within a slot formed through the blade carrier, so that a blade can be rapidly extended by the elastic force without going through stepwise movement. An expanded portion of the slot engaging the slider assembly allows the blade to be received in a holder and ejected only when the slider assembly fully disengages from the expanded portion, thereby generating no sudden ejection of the blade. Additionally, a safety latch securely locks the blade when the blade is fully retracted. When the blade is fully extended, a stopper engages the slider assembly to prevent the blade from being retracted during cutting and stabbing. Accordingly, the assisted-opening knife addresses a solution to rapidly extend the blade for cutting and stabbing without compromising the safety considerations.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2010Date of Patent: December 3, 2013Assignee: Taylor Brands, LLCInventor: Ming-Tsan Lee

Publication number: 20130055863Abstract: A safety cutting device for use in removing portions of an article from an injured person comprises a housing body and a blade, moveably coupled to the housing body. The blade has at least a spine and a cutting edge. The housing body includes an opening formed therein in which at least a portion of the blade can be stored when not in use. A safety guard is coupled to or formed integrally with a portion of the edge of the blade, the safety guard having a substantially smooth outer edge and being sized and shaped to allow the spine of the blade to safely slide along a body part of an injured person's body while restricting the cutting edge of the blade from contacting the injured person's body.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 2, 2011Publication date: March 7, 2013Inventor: Wayne Winton

Publication number: 20130036614Abstract: Embodiments herein provide an involute slicer having a body portion and a blade coupled to the body. The involute slicer may further include an anvil to provide structural support to a workpiece. The blade may rotate about an axis. As the blade rotates, the blade may pass next to the anvil, thereby cutting the workpiece. The blade may include a cutting edge with a radius that increases from a proximal end to a distal end of the cutting edge. For example, the cutting edge may have an involute shape. The involute shape of the cutting edge provides a radially expanding cutting edge as the blade is rotated. In some embodiments, the blade may include a plurality of cutting edges, such as two cutting edges.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 9, 2012Publication date: February 14, 2013Applicant: Blount, Inc.Inventor: Christopher D. Patent number: 8353109Abstract: A knife has a housing, a blade carrier supported in the housing and adapted to hold a blade, and an actuating element coupled to the blade carrier. A handle can move between a nonactuated position and an actuated position and is coupled to the actuating element such that on movement from the nonactuated position to the actuated position the actuating element displaces the blade carrier from a safety position in which blade mounted on the blade carrier is retracted into a seat of the housing in a first cutting position in which the blade projects out of the housing. A pivot joint connects the actuating element with the blade carrier. A guide supports the blade carrier in a translatory and a rotatable manner on the housing.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 2009Date of Patent: January 15, 2013Assignee: Martor KGInventor: Martin Rohrbach

Patent number: 8347509Abstract: A tool system is presented. The tool system includes a tool body sized and dimensioned to fit comfortably in a human hand, and includes a plurality of interchangeable tool cartridges. Some of the tool cartridges include a tool bit cover capable of remaining in a closed, locked position sheathing a tool bit. Once installed, the tool bit cover can be unlocked via actuation of a trigger disposed on the body of the tool or on the cartridge. Preferably, the tool bit cover unsheathes the underlying tool bit due to pressure or force of a work surface.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2009Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Votolato Living TrustInventor: Earl Votolato

Publication number: 20120311869Abstract: A cutter formed by detachably attaching a replaceable blade to a cutter body. The cutter body can include a main body block and slide block. The main body block includes a main body supporting section supporting the replaceable blade back face, and a main body connecting section connecting with the replaceable blade from the front face side. The slide block includes a rear side supporting section supporting the replaceable blade back face, a slide connecting section connecting with and retracting the replaceable blade toward the rear side, and a back side protruding section protruding on the back side in a thickness direction. When attached, the replaceable blade elastically deforms to curve in the thickness direction, the slide block presses toward a main body block side in the thickness direction by elastic force of the replaceable blade, and the back side protruding section engages with a main body block engaged section.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 8, 2011Publication date: December 13, 2012Applicant: Feather Safety Razor Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masao Ichiyanagi, Akira Takahashi

Patent number: 8256331Abstract: A guarded surgical knife handle includes a handle portion with a blade holder, a chamber within the handle portion, and a slot. The guarded surgical knife handle also includes a guard having an open distal end slidably mounted within the handle portion that can slide longitudinally between an unguarded position and a guarded position. The guard is sized to surround the blade in the guarded position. The guarded surgical knife handle also includes a latch that latches the guard when the guard is slid into the guarded position and a first button that disengages the latch. The guarded surgical knife handle includes a bias member that forces the guard in a proximal direction to an unguarded position when the latch is disengaged along with a second button extending through the slot used to slide the guard in a distal direction into the guarded position.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2009Date of Patent: September 4, 2012Assignee: Alcon Research, Ltd.Inventors: Gregory Allen Auchter, Randal Lee Berardi, David Robert Schiff, Seth McCue GaleWyrick
