Rotary Patents (Class 30/347)
  • Patent number: 4162575
Abstract: An improved cutting assembly for rotary lawn mowers, edgers, trimmers or the like, including a body member arranged for rotating about an axis normal with the cutting plane. At least two cutting lines are attached to the body member on a compound spool for rotation therewith in the cutting plane. The invention includes means for detachably securing the lines to the body member and for storing a supply of the line on the spool so that the line may be paid out as the working portions of the line become shortened through wear. The cutting lines are preferably nonmetallic so as to reduce the hazardous condition which would otherwise be present for the operator and still provide an apparatus which will cut with great efficiency and safety.

  • Patent number: 4086700
Abstract: A cutter for a lawn mower has a rotating disc for mounting on a driving mechanism, the disc having a cavity therein and two openings at diametrically opposite points in the periphery of the disc and opening out of the disc from the cavity. A guide member is provided on the opposite side of the each opening and each pair of opposed guide members defines the opening therebetween. The disc has holes therein inclined outwardly from a surface of the disc other than the periphery and extending into the cavity, one hole being provided adjacent each of the openings. A plurality of flexible wire-shaped cutting members, each having a wire-shaped portion of a flexible material and a stop on one end thereof, extending through the inclined holes and through the cavity and out through the openings and project beyond the periphery of the disc, with the stops against the surface of the disc for preventing the cutting members from being flung outwardly of the disc during rotation thereof.

  • Patent number: 4047299
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting, trimming, and edging vegetation along driveways, sidewalks, and the like; around trees, shrubs, and like landscaping; and adjacent fences, walls, posts, and the like by rotation of a non-metallic cutting line in a cutting plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The apparatus includes a drive motor positioned in a trimmer housing at one end of an elongated handle and adapted to rotate a driven shaft and a spool member connected thereto. The spool member has a storage of non-metallic cutting line member coiled thereon with a non-coiled portion thereof extending from the spool member and through an aperture in a wall of the trimmer housing. The spool member may be moved longitudinally of the driven shaft against the resistance of a resilient member and turned relative to the driven shaft to thereby adjust the amount of the cutting line member extending through the aperture in the one wall of the trimmer housing.

  • Patent number: 4035915
Abstract: A filament-bearing plate or disk system for cutting grass and the like in which the filament is wound upon later-closed serrations in the disk periphery rather than passed through a succession of holes in the disk periphery; embodiments of the invention have respectively resilient, malleably deformable, and rotationally positionable aperture closing, and a ring closure.

  • Patent number: 4020553
Abstract: An automatic-deployment reel-type cutter head for a filament trimmer provides for manufacturing purposes an easy-wind structure and for operating purposes, a winding pre-selectivity of filament-deployment length from the cutter head. The cutter head structure also during cutting operations protects filament wound on it but not yet deployed. In a preferred embodiment the reel comprises a first circular member with an array of postlike elements upstanding from the rim and a second circular member for capping the free ends of the array of upstanding elements to prevent transient-load disarray of the filament during operation.
