  • Patent number: 5996233
Abstract: An elongated flexible cutting string, or substantially self-supporting strut cutting element, is connectable to a rotating device for use in a method of cutting vegetation. The cutting string has numerous advantages over conventional cutting strings, having a drag coefficient which is at least about 5% (e.g. 10-300%) less than the drag coefficient of a string having a substantially round and smooth cross-section. The drag coefficient of aerodynamic line 10 is 1.0 or less, e.g. about 0.35 or less. The cross-sectional configuration preferably simulates a tear drop (with or without an extension nose), and can have a textured (e.g. with golf ball simulating dimples, saw toothed or a wavy configuration) exterior surface. The pitch of the line is positively maintained while it is rotated in a cutting plane, e.g. controlled with an eyelet and/or a compound taper. Other cross-sectional configurations are an ellipse of at least 1.

Abstract: A TDMA system with a TDMA frame format that requires no guard time, or with a maximum guard time of one clock cycle of the high timing base is applied to a network with a fixed central base, or headend, and remote units, called Premises Interface Devices (PIDs), which have a fixed communication media, such as a cable, between the headend and PID. This TDMA system is particularly useful for increasing system efficiency for CATV applications. The system method works as follows: a remote PID attempting to access the system sends a short data burst to the headend. By measuring the time difference between the time reference and the beginning of the uplink signal received, the headend will send timing correction/adjustment information to the PID. The PID then adjusts the timing of its data bursts, optionally sends a trial message and, once a verified correct transmission is acknowledged by the headend, sends regular data.

  • Patent number: 5671536
Abstract: A line trimmer head includes a line feed configuration which facilitates reloading the head with new line without requiring removal of the spool from the housing. Line is sequentially fed first into the housing through a peripheral opening in the housing, through a guide channel in the spool, and then out of the housing beyond a lower flange of the spool through an opening in the hub of spool. Finally, the line is fed into a small opening in a spool flange to secure the line with respect to the spool. Rotation of the spool inside the housing then causes line to be drawn into the housing through the peripheral opening and wrapped around the spool. The spool provides separate storage compartments for different lines. Additional payout of line is provided when a bump knob is bumped on a ground surface.

  • Patent number: 5659960
Abstract: A line trimmer head is provided including a rotatable drive shaft and a housing mounted to the drive shaft for rotation therewith. The housing has an open end and at least one peripheral aperture formed through the housing. A spool subassembly is positioned at least partially within the housing adjacent the open end of the housing. The subassembly includes a spool having at least one flange extending radially outwardly from the periphery thereof, a cog ring secured to the spool, and a ratchet and pawl assembly formed between the cog ring and spool. The ratchet and pawl assembly allows rotation of the spool in a first direction with respect to the cog ring for winding line around the spool while preventing spool rotation in a second direction opposite the first direction to facilitate line feed bumping and line trimming operations.

  • Patent number: 5644844
Abstract: A filament trimmer comprises a lower housing, an upper handle and a single handle tube connecting the two together to form a completed trimmer. The handle tube has approximately the same length as the length of the lower housing, and the upper handle has approximately the same width as the lower housing, to allow the three-part construction of the trimmer to be packaged in a box of minimum size. The upper end of the lower housing has an S-shaped cord channel, with an adjacent open chamber or space next to and below the cord channel, such that the electrical cord passing downwardly into the lower housing from the handle tube will naturally form a downwardly protruding loop that is easily received in the lower housing when the handle tube is pushed down into the lower housing during assembly.
