Rotary Patents (Class 30/347)
  • Patent number: 5493785
Abstract: A heavy-duty, long-life, light-weight, replaceable rotary cutter head accessory for attachment to a rotary member of a vegetation trimmer is provided by this invention. The invention is characterized by several novel construction features that give the head superior cutting performance. For example, its construction is of two cylindrical coaxially nested cup-like head members with several sets of symmetrical apertures about the rim for retaining extending cutter members. The head members are constructed of light weight and extremely durable plastic, namely ultra high molecular weight polyethylene which has long wearing qualities. With apertures located in the two separate rim members, the head may be adapted for either flexible cord or rigid cutting members. The rigid cutting members are 16 or 20 penny nails, which wear a long time before encountering excessive wear in the special plastic head members.

  • Patent number: 5441115
Abstract: A bevelled edger blade has a base side attachable centrally to a conventional edger shaft. Ends of the base side having cutting edges are extended an equal distance in opposite directions from a blade axis at a central attachment orifice on the base side to vertical corners. An axial corner is positioned a select distance horizontally from the blade axis. Sloped edges of border channels of landscape areas are cut by cutting edges on angular sides intermediate the axial corner and the vertical corners on the three-sided edger blade as it is rotated by the conventional edger shaft. The angular sides can be straight for cutting straight slopes or arcuate for cutting arcuate slopes optionally. A blade brace can be positioned parallel to the base side between the angular sides. The vertical corners can be angled acutely for cutting landscape channels with acute angles between a straight surface and an opposite side.

  • Patent number: 5424128
Abstract: A monofilament line for a rotating string trimmer has a main body portion of a generally circular configuration. One or more sharp longitudinal cutting edges are integrally formed with the main body portion and protrude from the main body portion at an angle selected to cause controlled flex and asymmetrical drag on the cutting element, as it is rotated by a rotating string trimmer. This causes a torsional rotation of the free end of the line as it is rotated; so that the main body portion of the cutting element first strikes the object to be cut, followed by contact with the sharp cutting edge. This configuration is selected to cause cleaner cuts of grass and the like, with less shredding of the cut ends of the grass blades. In addition, larger vegetation such as weeds and small stalky shrubs may be efficiently cut without abnormally high wear of the cutting line.

Abstract: Apparatus for cutting vegetation with a rotatable head carrying a non-metallic cutting line extended into a cutting plane. As the line extension decreases from an established preset length an actuator in the head permits additional line to be extended automatically from a supply source within the head. The actuator imposes a back pressure against the line of magnitude correlated to the sensed pull tension wanting to extend the line outward of the head. After the cutting line length is extended to its restored original preset length, the actuator in response to the operational forces imposed thereon secures the cutting line against further extension until a subsequent decrease in line extension is incurred. In one embodiment an inertial drag brake is activated during the course of line feedout and is deactivated after the length of cutting line has been fully restored.

  • Patent number: 5109607
Abstract: A line trimmer head 10 for a vegetation cutter having an automatic line feed mechanism which replenishes the line 19 as a result of changes in centrifugal force. The line trimmer head 10 comprises a reel housing 14 which rotates with a shaft 12. A spool 18 containing a supply of line 19 is located within the housing 14. An indexer cam 16 is journaled on the shaft 12 and is axially and rotatably shiftable with respect to the shaft 12. The indexer cam 16 is periodically axially shifted and rotated by a reduction in the centrifugal force applied by the line 19 to the spool 18. A spring 20 is provided to bias the indexer cam 16 axially relative to the housing 14 away from an interlocked posiiton. In the interlocked position, the indexer cam 16 and housing 14 are interlocked together so that the spool 18, indexer cam 16, housing 14 and shaft 12 rotate together.

Abstract: A shield and structure for mounting the shield to a hand held grass trimmer is provided. The generally flat shield is perpendicularly mounted to a gear box extension which is carried coaxial with the drive shaft tube. Twisting and moment forces incurred by the shield when the trimmer is resting on the ground are reduced by mounting the shield to support the weight of the trimmer generally perpendicular to the length of the drive shaft tube. The mounting structure prevents sliding of the shield on the drive tube and provides multiple attaching members to prevent rotation of the shield on the drive tube.

  • Patent number: 5060384
Abstract: An automatic line trimmer head 10 including a housing 11 containing a rotor 12 which controls rotation of a spool 16 relative to the housing in a stepwise fashion which is actuated by centrifugal force. Centrifugal force acts upon a radially expansible annular member 14 which is disposed between the housing 11 and the rotor 12. The spool 16 contains a supply of line 18 and is attached to the rotor 12 for rotation with the rotor. A shaft extends through the housing 10, rotor 12 and spool 16. The rotor 12 is biased by a helical spring 24 toward an upper plane of rotation. The radially expandable annular member 14 shifts the rotor 12 to a lower plane when centrifugal force expands the annular member 14. Teeth 54 extending radially outwardly from an outer edge 56 of a circular disk portion 50 of the rotor 12 contact an upper set of stop blocks when the circular disk portion 50 is in the upper plane. The teeth 54 contact a lower set of stop blocks 42 when the circular disk portion 50 is in the lower plane.

  • Patent number: 5060383
Abstract: A vegetation cutter has a power unit and a rotating cutting device defining a planar cutting circle. In a hand-held cutter the circle is disposed about an axis at an obtuse angle with respect to the structure held. In a non-hand-held unit the axis is not dependent on any relationship to the structure. For either of these categories, a guard is provided having a narrow elongate arcuate shape, the arc centered on the axis with radius substantially the same as the planar cutting circle and normally disposed below the planar cutting circle and in front of the cutting circle with respect to the forward movement of the cutter and the operator thereof. The guard has sufficient length to operatively support and guide the cutting device when the cutter is turned and operated with the planar cutting circle in vertical disposition as in edging. A mounting assembly is secured to both the structure and the guard and permits the guard to be pivotted from normal operative position to standby position.
