Rotary Patents (Class 30/347)
  • Patent number: 4989321
Abstract: The invention relates to a rotatably driven cutterhead for a vegetation cutter apparatus. The cutterhead includes a housing in which a spool for the cutting filament is rotatably journalled so as to be rotatable relative to the housing. Switching stops are provided which coact with the spool. Latching levers are pivotally mounted in the housing which each have a latching arm which coacts with the switching stops in dependence upon centrifugal force in such a manner that the spool is first in a latched condition and is then in a freely rotatably condition with correspondingly higher centrifugal force. A predetermined length of filament is unwound in the freely rotatably condition of the spool. The latching arm pivots between an outer release position and an inner latching position and is resiliently biased by a spring in the direction of its latching position.

  • Patent number: 4959904
Abstract: An improvement for flail cutter heads so that additional flail can be fed from the device by merely bumping its rotating body on the ground. A pair of disc-shaped cams are readily mounted on the centerline of the body on the opposite radial sides of a spool around which the flails are wound. The disc-shaped cams interact with facing cam followers on the inner surfaces of spool covers forming the major portions of the body so that when the lower cam is moved axially out of contact with the lower follower, by bouncing a downwardly biased, axially mounted bumper member on the ground, the other has already moved axially upwardly in position for engagement with the upper follower. This engagement occurs after a predetermined rotation of the spool. Once the bounce is over, the upper cam moves axially in the reverse direction, disengaging the upper cam follower after the lower cam is in position the contact the lower cam followers after another predetermined of rotation.

  • Patent number: 4942665
Abstract: A meat trimming knife for removing meat from carcasses and an ON/OFF control switch therefor wherein the knife is suspended above a work table by a power supply line which is connected to the knife through an elongated handle that extends generally vertically from the knife and generally parallel to the rotational axis of a ring-shaped cutting blade. In a first embodiment, an electric drive motor is suspended above the work station and the knife blade is rotated by a flexible drive cable connected to the motor by a drive belt and pulleys located within a horizontal housing. Downward vertical movement of the knife will pivot the housing through the connected drive cable to actuate a control switch to operatively connect the drive motor to the cable for rotating the blade. Upon release of the downward pull on the knife a spring or counterweight will pivot the belt housing upwardly to automatically actuate the switch to deenergize the drive motor.

  • Patent number: 4936884
Abstract: A cutting device is provided to replace a conventional lawnmower blade which offers improved safety, outstanding grass cutting ability, improved grass bagging suction, and a reduction in the strain on the engine. The device includes an elongated, downwardly curved rigid thermoplastic member having an upstanding airfoil at each distal end. Several elongated flexible tines extend outwardly away and downwardly from the member. The tips of these tines operate to effectively cut the grass while flexing for safety if an object is encountered, such as a rock or toe. The airfoils increase the suction within the mowing cavity to increase the grass bagging efficiency. The downwardly curved configuration presents the tips of the tines for grass cutting while reducing or eliminating the drag of the member on the grass.

Abstract: Apparatus for cutting vegetation with a rotatable head carrying a non-metallic cutting line extended into a cutting plane. As the line extension decreases from an established preset length an actuator in the head permits additional line to be extended automatically from a supply source within the head. The actuator imposes a back pressure against the line of magnitude correlated to the sensed pull tension wanting to extend the line outward of the head. After the cutting line length is extended to its restored original preset length, the actuator in response to the operational forces imposed thereon secures the cutting line against further extension until a subsequent decrease in line extension is incurred. • Patent number: 4817288
Abstract: A cutting head for a cord type mower which severs grass and weeds with cords unwound from a cord spool provided within a bowl-shaped rotary casing and radially projected from the rotary casing by rotating the rotary casing at a high rotating speed. A speed change control mechanism is provided within the rotary casing to control the rotating speed of the rotary casing so as to vary it according to the length of the projecting portions of the cords. When the cords wear and shorten, the moment of inertia of the cutting head decreases; consequently the rotating speed of the rotary casing increases and thereby the cords are fed out automatically by the increased centrifugal force acting on the cords. Then, the engaging members members engaging the speed change control plate are moved radially outward by the centrifugal force to reduce the rotating speed of the rotary casing. Thus, the cords are always projected by a predetermined length from the rotary casing for stable mowing operation.

  • Patent number: 4667410
Abstract: In a cutting head for an electric-motor-driven filament-type cutter the automatic adjustment of the length of the filament is effected in that intermittently a rotational movement occurs between a filament spool (36) and a sleeve (24) mounting said spool for axial displacement. The sleeve (24) is provided on the outside with locking cams and the filament spool on the inside with cams cooperating therewith. The sleeve (24) can be pushed in by hand against spring pressure to cancel the intermittent locking. For automatic filament adjustment a centrifugal adjustment is provided. For this purpose at least two radial ball slots (40) are provided between the housing portion (14) and a radial extension (48) of the sleeve (24) and in the ball slots balls (44) are guided which are adapted to be urged outwardly by centrifugal force.

  • Patent number: 4633588
Abstract: A bump-actuable filament feed for vegetation trimmers; when the cutting length of filament breaks or wears short, the user without interrupting cutting simply bumps the cutting head on the ground deploying a fresh cutting-length of filament. Bumping causes a spring-restored spool latch to yield an increment of spool rotation, feeding a corresponding increment of filament from the spool. For replenishing the filament supply when exhausted, the spool snaps out in one embodiment on pressing a button, and a fresh spool as easily snaps into place. For applications in which bumping the cutting head against the ground is not desired an analogous operation is provided by adaptation of the basic structure.
