    Abstract: A retention apparatus for an electrically powered hand-held circular saw having a retractable lower saw blade guard, that holds the lower saw blade guard in the retracted position as long as the power on/off switch is activated. This lower saw blade guard holder enables the saw operator to readily manipulate the saw with one hand while using the other hand to improve the safety environment of the cutting action, such as holding the material to be cut, or keeping the power cord out of the path of the saw during the cutting activity. In one embodiment, the lower saw blade guard holder comprises an electromagnet, wired to the power on/off switch, which holds a section of ferromagnetic material on the lower saw blade guard. Another embodiment of this invention has the lower saw blade guard holder mechanically latched by a latch that is mechanically coupled to the power on/off switch. In one embodiment, the lower saw blade guard holder also contains a lamp for lighting up the material being cut.

    Abstract: A Tongue attachment for a portable electric circular saw equipped with a lower retractable or pivoting blade guard in which in a closed position the guard covers most of the blade, to a retracted position in which the cutting edge is exposed to material for cutting. An interior wall of the lower guard of such conventional saws has a quarter-circular leading edge that serves as a point of sliding contact with the work piece as the saw cuts through the piece. An opposite, exterior wall of such conventional guards lacks a similar leading edge. Consequently, the lower guard of such saws of conventional design have a tendency to catch the concave wall of the face of the guard on the material being worked. This stops the saw from proceeding until the handle on the guard is used to lift it from this catching position. The Tongue attachment completely eliminates this problem. In an alternative embodiment, such a tongue is made an integral part of a lower guard.

The latch member (34) includes a hook (44) engagable in a first retaining notch (46) or a second retaining notch (50) in a hub (48) of the guard member (22) for this purpose, depending upon whether the saw (10) is being used to make a straight cut or a 45.degree. cut. The latch member (34) is retained in a latching positon by a spring biased push rod (52) and is moved to an unlatching position by operation of the push rod.

    Abstract: A hand held cutting tool is disclosed for use in cutting articles, especially when the tool is to be used in confined quarters while protecting the operator from being cut by the tool. The tool includes a motor which drives the cutter only when one hand of the operator grasps the motor housing and closes a trigger. Portions of a cutter and cutter guard project out of a small housing, and the guard normally encompasses the projecting portion of the cutter. When it is desired to expose the projecting portion of the cutter to perform a cutting operation, the other hand of the operator must grip a portion of the tool remote from the exposed portion of the cutter and must actuate a valve or handle to expose and maintain the guard in the exposed cutting position.

    Abstract: In one embodiment of this quick change mechanism, a narrow six spline hub is installed in the arbor hole of a circular saw blade or other disc tool heads such as grinders, sanders and buffers. This hub slides onto a matching splined drive shaft in which a narrow section of spline lands has been removed circumferentially to fit the width of the splined hub that is secured to the circular saw blade. A fifteen degree rotation of this splined blade hub on this shaft aligns all the lands and grooves, thus locking the hub relative the longitudinal axis of the drive shaft. To continue the locking, by locking the hub in rotation relative to the shaft, a splined sliding collar with spline land extensions, serving as locking fingers, is interposed into the spline grooves of the drive shaft and also the hub grooves. A blind longitudinal hole in the drive shaft contains a compression spring and an unthreaded bolt.

The base plate joins the bracket by fastening means at the portion intermediate the ends of the bracket after the base plate is set at a desired angle with respect to the saw blade.
