    Abstract: A hand-held exercise device comprises a frame, a handle attached to the frame, a spool element pivotally mounted to the frame, a pull-cord movable between a wound configuration in which the pull-cord is wound around the spool element and an unwound configuration in which the pull-cord is unwound from the spool element, a resistance element pivotally mounted to the frame, a transmission that couples the pull-cord to the resistance element such that pulling the pull-cord from the device causes the resistance element to rotate, and a damping means that acts to slow the rotation of the resistance element. The device provides a compact and lightweight form of exercise equipment that is easy to carry and easy to store. The device can be used with various fixtures, and also with a second handle fixed to the pull-cord, to allow the user to perform a wide range of exercises. Preferably the exercise device transmits exercise data to an external device that provides feedback and guidance to the user.

Each of the magnetic coils is connected with a capacitor so as to form a resonance circuit, respectively. The driving device has transistors connected in series to each of the connections and controlled so as to be opened and closed by the operation signal. The revolution speed of a rotary magnetic field generated by AC voltage induced in the magnetic coils forming the resonance circuits by the rotation of the steel rotor is set smaller than the revolution speed of the steel rotor.

    Abstract: A magnetic braking, governing, or speed retarding system for use with a wheeled conveyance may take advantage of eddy currents induced when a magnet moves past a non-magnetic conductor. A plurality of magnets may be disposed within a rotor that rotates as a wheel axle rotates. The magnets rotate past one or more relatively stationary stators to generate eddy currents that create a resistance on the rotor, thereby acting to retard or slow the rotational speed of the rotor and the axle. The system may be particularly well-suited with a wheeled conveyance such as a sled that is gravity driven and travels downhill along a track. The speed governing system may apply lesser force in relatively flat sections of the track, due to slower wheel rotational speeds, and greater force as the conveyance attempts to pick up speed, e.g., in steeper sections.
