  • Patent number: 4710660
Abstract: A solenoidal homopolar dynamoelectric machine is provided with inner and outer field coils positioned on opposite sides of a current collecting zone of a rotor which is mounted for rotation with respect to a stator structure. An additional field shaping coil or a tilted brush box current collector is used to conduct current in a circumferential direction near the current collection zone of the rotor to reduce the radial components of magnetic flux in the current collection zone. This reduces circulating currents in the brush assembly.

  • Patent number: 4704552
Abstract: An electrical machine comprising a stator having electrical windings and a permanent-magnet rotor which carries a shaft arranged for connection to a prime mover. The machine, when the shaft is driven by a prime mover, acts as an alternator to produce alternating electrical current. A commutator is provided on the shaft and electrical-current-transferring brushes are associated with the commutator. Means is electrically associated with the segments of the commutator and with the electrical windings on the stator so that, whe the brushes are connected to a source of direct electrical current, the machine acts as a motor and the shaft is caused to rotate for starting a prime mover connected to the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4503349
Abstract: Homopolar generators are provided with a helical field coil disposed around a rotor, wound coaxially with the rotor, and connected in series with sliding electrical contacts on the rotor. The coil of a single rotor machine includes two sections wound so as to increase magnetic flux through the rotor when current is allowed to flow through an external circuit and through the coil and brushes. For a dual counterrotating rotor machine, a single section coil is used to perform the same function.

  • Patent number: 4500819
Abstract: An electric work vehicle with a battery powered traction motor and pump motor is provided with an auxiliary power supply for a load circuit requiring voltage lower than that of the battery. The pump motor is provided with an auxiliary brush at a location between a pair of motor brushes and the auxiliary load circuit is connected between the auxiliary brush and one of the motor brushes. The auxiliary brush is positioned relative to the motor brush so that it supplies the voltage required by the auxiliary load circuit.

  • Patent number: 4459503
Abstract: An improved direct-current electrical dynamotor wherein the brushes are sufficiently wide to simultaneously abut a multiplicity of commutator segments. The winding sections extend independently from one commutator segment to a commutator segment that is approximately 180 electrical degrees away whereby the brushes each simultaneously collect a plurality of currents induced in the winding sections extending to the commutator segments abutted by the pair of positive and negative brushes. Each pair of brushes is installed on each side of the magnetic neutral. All of the coil sections are completely independent of each other with no electrical interconnections aside from the commutator brushes.

  • Patent number: 4367887
Abstract: A passive safety seat belt system for a vehicle includes a belt that is driven between a restraint position and a release position by a direct current electric motor having first and second brushes positioned diametrically opposite each other on the commutator. A third brush is positioned adjacent the second brush and contacts the commutator. When the first and second brushes are connected to a source of current to energize the motor, the motor produces a first torque output in a forward direction, and when the first and third brushes are connected with a source of current to energize the motor, the motor produces a second torque smaller than the first torque and in a reverse direction. The motor operates in the forward direction to drive the belt system from the release position to the restraint position in one time period, and operates in the reverse direction to drive the belt system from the restraint position to the release position in approximately the same time period.

  • Patent number: 4283651
Abstract: A switching circuit electrically connected to a brush and collector bar of a DC dynamoelectric machine utilizing a high current rectifier and a source of electromotive source which produces a current in the circuit which is generally equal to the current flowing between the brush and the collector bar and which can be forced to zero as the brush separates from the collector bar to reduce degradation of the trailing edges of the brushes and collector bars and improve the machine efficiency.

  • Patent number: 4056746
Abstract: An electric motor including a rotary armature and an annular field mounted for rotation around said armature and geared to said armature by way of planetary gearing fixed to the housing whereby the opposing torques of the field and the armature are summed at the motor output shaft. Such counter-rotating field arrangement provides for an increase in the flux cutting speed of the motor while, at the same time, maintaining the angular rate of the armature at a speed which is compatible with the containment of the centrifugal forces thereof. Both the armature and the field include concentric commutation rings at one end of the motor such that the field coils and the armature coils are excited at a predetermined phase angle by a plurality of field and armature brushes. Disposed along the field and armature brushes, and separated therefrom by at least one commutation segment are corresponding pick-up brushes which receive the collapsing field transient of the individual coils in both the armature and the field.

  • Patent number: 3940644
Abstract: In a direct current machine having plural brushes arranged for sliding engagement over the surface of the commutator assembly along separate paths; wherein the commutator assembly comprises a multiple number of commutator bars with each bar having a current transfer surface divided into conducting and nonconducting sections, each section being located in one of the separate paths, and with the sections of adjacent commutator bars so arranged to provide a checkerboard pattern of conducting and nonconducting sections over the commutator assembly surface. The brushes are interconnected to the machine load through a predetermined circuit network which controls the short circuit current.
