  • Patent number: 8860275
Abstract: An interior permanent magnet machine includes a rotor configured to magnetically interact with a stator. First and second dividers are integrally formed within the rotor and configured to create a first layer of three respective first segments. Each of the respective first segments may be substantially arc-shaped. A plurality of first magnets may be positioned in the first layer. The first magnets may be substantially arc-shaped and defined around an arc center. A third and a fourth divider may be integrally formed within the rotor and configured to create a second layer of three respective second segments. The placement of dividers or structural webs provides for increased rotational speed and reduced rotational stress compared to an undivided arc-shaped magnet configuration.

  • Patent number: 8334667
Abstract: A permanent magnet rotating electrical machine capable of conducting a variable speed operation at high output in a wide range from low speed to high speed and improving efficiency and reliability in a wide operating range. Two kinds of permanent magnets having different shapes or different magnetic characteristics are embedded in a rotor core, to form a magnetic pole. The permanent magnets arranged at the magnetic pole include a permanent magnet whose product of coercive force and thickness along a magnetizing direction is small and a permanent magnet whose product of coercive force and thickness along the magnetizing direction is large. A magnetic field created by passing a current to an armature coil for a short time is used to irreversibly magnetize the permanent magnet whose product of coercive force and thickness along magnetizing direction is small, thereby changing a total linkage flux amount, and a positive d-axis current is passed when torque is large.

  • Patent number: 7719153
Abstract: A method and apparatus in which a stator (11) and a rotor (12) define a primary air gap (20) for receiving AC flux and at least one source (23, 40), and preferably two sources (23, 24, 40) of DC excitation are positioned for inducing DC flux at opposite ends of the rotor (12). Portions of PM material (17, 17a) are provided as boundaries separating PM rotor pole portions from each other and from reluctance poles. The PM poles (18) and the reluctance poles (19) can be formed with poles of one polarity having enlarged flux paths in relation to flux paths for pole portions of an opposite polarity, the enlarged flux paths communicating with a core of the rotor (12) so as to increase reluctance torque produced by the electric machine. Reluctance torque is increased by providing asymmetrical pole faces. The DC excitation can also use asymmetric poles and asymmetric excitation sources. Several embodiments are disclosed with additional variations.
