    Abstract: A commutator motor constructed and arranged to provide cooling and removal of carbon dust produced during operation. The motor comprises a housing, a stator consisting of a plurality of laminations embedded in the housing and defining at least a pair of circumferentially spaced yoke portions and pole portions intermediate the yoke portions. The rotor is rotatably supported in the stator cavity. The yoke portions are of a predetermined configuration defining first axial channels having inlet and outlet openings to facilitate flow of cooling medium through the channels in one direction. A commutator chamber is provided at one axial end of the rotor and separated from the rotor cavity by a circumferentially extending wall.

    Abstract: A slip ring for the transfer of very large currents to the rotor of an electric power generator is provided with a slip contact surface in the form of a surface of revolution oblique to the axis of rotation that is a ruled surface, which is to say straight lines (known as generatrices) can be drawn on it, whether the surface be flat, as a conical surface, or curved as, for example, a hyperboloidal surface. Cooling grooves centered on straight lines are provided, as well as cooling channels beneath the surface and parallel to it, through which air passes and may thereafter be used to cool the brushes and their supports. The brushes are arranged on self-adjusting ring-shaped carriers hung on centering arms rolling on axially directed guides and urged by a spring arrangement so as to press the brushes towards the slip ring. When one ring of brushes is worn away, it is carried beyond the slip ring where it can be removed for renewal and new rings of brushes can be added, all without stopping the generator.

    Abstract: A DC permanent magnet machine having stator and rotor assemblies of the "inside out" design. The stator is provided with a plurality of electrically energizable poles having windings which are electrically coupled to associated commutator bars forming an annular array. The rotor is provided with a plurality of permanent magnet poles equal in number to the poles provided in the stator. A plurality of roller contact assemblies mounted upon the rotor serve to progressively and sequentially couple the commutator bars to brush rings and through brushes to opposite polarities of a DC energizing source, thereby sequentially providing electrical power to associated coils of the stator winding. The interaction of the magnetic field created by the energized stator coils and the magnetic field of the permanent magnets in the rotor assembly causes rotation of the rotor which, in turn, rotates the roller contacts to continuously and progressively switch the DC source to succeeding stator coils.
