  • Patent number: 5079460
Abstract: A magnetostrictive drive motor having a rotary drive shaft in the form of a drum which is encircled by a plurality of substantially equally spaced roller members in the form of two sets of cones which are in contact with respective cam surfaces on the inside surface of an outer drive ring. The drive ring is attached to sets of opposing pairs of magnetostrictive rods. Each rod in a pair are mutually positioned end to end within respective energizing coils. When one of the coils in an opposing pair is energized, the energized rod expands while the other rod is caused to contract, causing the drive ring to rock, i.e. rotate slightly in either the clockwise or counterclockwise direction, depending upon which rod in a pair is energized. As the drive ring is activated in repetitive cycles in either direction, one set of drive cones attempt to roll up their respective cam surface but are pinned between the drive shaft drum and the drive ring.

Abstract: An automatic door protective device for returning an overhead door to the open position when it encounters an obstacle as it is closing. The protective device of this invention includes a motor having an output shaft and a driving gear mounted on the shaft. A driven gear is in mesh with the driving gear mounted on a gear shaft which also mounts a worm. A worm wheel is in mesh with the worm which is mounted on a worm wheel shaft, which also mounts a pulley that raises and lowers the door in response to rotation of the output shaft to the motor. The end of the gear shaft is spaced away from a copper leaf spring, and an electrical contact is also provided spaced away from the leaf spring. The spring and the contact are part of an electrical circuit with a signal controller coupled to the motor. When the door encounters an obstacle and the pulley ceases rotation, the torque of the motor causes the gear shaft to displace axially as the worm moves along the worm wheel teeth.

Abstract: A magnetic transmission is provided which incorporates a first rotatable member that is generally annular in shape and provided with a plurality of magnetic poles in which the plurality of magnetic poles comprise alternating polarities. A second rotatable member is similarly provided with a plurality of alternating magnetic poles. Both the first and second rotatable members are supported for rotation about individual axes and, preferably, are arranged in concentric and coaxial relation with each other. One of more third rotatable members are also provided with magnetic poles having alternating polarity and supported for rotation about individual axes. These third rotatable members are disposed radially between the first and second rotatable members and are arranged in noncontact magnetic torque transmitting relation with both the first and second rotatable members. Any of the first, second or third rotatable members can be provided with connection to a driving force, such as a motor.

  • Patent number: 5006740
Abstract: The in-line saw has a handle, a motor housing and a gear case which contains a drive mechanism which imparts a reciprocating action to the blade. The drive mechanism generates heat. The gear case is covered by an insulating boot which has internal ribs which contact the gear case and form air flow channels. The motor housing has air openings near the handle and the fan mounted on the motor drive shaft draws cooling air through the slots over the motor and out the space between the gear case and the motor housing except that the boot extends partially over the slot to divert air to the space between the boot and the case. The cooling air leaves the cooling space at the front of the boot to blow sawdust from the area of the blade. The boot is electrically insulating and covers the metal gear case.

Abstract: The problem of providing a dual redundant load path which is not vulnerable to a single point failure at the output of a motor shaft is solved by a dual redundant load path motor system, particularly for use in aircraft actuation systems. A motor (22) has a rotor (34) extending entirely therethrough to define first and second output drives (38 and 40) at opposite ends (34a and 34b) of the rotor. First and second output shafts (46 and 48) are coupled to the opposite ends of the rotor. The output shafts are located at a common end of the motor, and one of the output shafts (48) is coupled through a connecting shaft (68) to the end of the rotor at the opposite end of the motor. The connecting shaft runs generally parallel to the rotor.

Abstract: In an electric motor-driven positioning element for steering the rear wheels of a passenger car, a rotor of an electric motor is mounted on a ball nut which is adapted to effect axial displacement of a ball screw. The ball nut supports on a flange the shafts of pinions of a planetary gear unit, with the sun wheel of that planetary gear unit being driven by the rotor of the electric motor. The housing accommodates an electro-magnetic dog clutch which serves to block the ball nut during the time the electric motor is not energized.

  • Patent number: 4980591
Abstract: A one-way clutch for a reduction-geared motor having a reversible electric motor and reduction gears allows an output shaft thereof to rotate in a normal direction and firmly prevents the output shaft from rotating in a reverse direction when the reversible electric motor is not fed. The one-way clutch includes a transmission gear supported on the output shaft wherein a sawtooth is provided on one side of the transmission gear. A clutch, axially movable relative to the output shaft, has a sawtooth facing the sawtooth of the transmission gear. The clutch also provides a radially located rotation-prevention portion. A compression spring is included for urging the clutch for the transmission gear in a direction along the axis of the output shaft. A stopper pin in the gear casing is inserted into the rotation prevention portion of the clutch. An electromagnet in the gear casing urges the clutch in a direction opposite to the direction urged by the compression spring when the electromagnet is fed.
