Abstract: A rim made of glass or ceramic material is attached to an alloy sheet with through holes therein at an elevated temperature. Voltages applied to the sheet may be used for focusing electrons passing there through onto a phosphor layer for displaying images. An optional insulating layer is formed on the sheet and optional grid electrodes are formed on the insulating layer for addressing and focusing. Upon cooling, the rim maintains the alloy sheet in tension. Holes in the alloy sheet and the grid electrodes are therefore maintained in proper alignment with cathodes and pixel dots despite temperature variations. The rim also forms a portion of the side wall of the display device, so that once the rim has been aligned with and attached to a cathode plate and face plate, the accurate alignment process has been completed and the assembly of the device is much simplified.

  • Publication number: 20020036455
Abstract: In a colour display tube (1), the shadow mask (13) serves as the colour selective element. The major part of the electrons emitted by the electron gun (10) are intercepted by the shadow mask (13). These electrons can be absorbed by the shadow mask (13) or they can be reflected. In the first situation, where the electrons are absorbed, the shadow mask (13) is heated as a result of which it will be deformed, leading to misregistration of the electron beams (7, 8, 9) when they impinge upon the phosphor screen (6), causing colour impurities on the colour display tube (1). This phenomenon is commonly referred to as doming. In the second situation, where the electrons are reflected, degradation of the contrast performance takes place because the reflected electrons hit the phosphor screen (6) at totally different positions, leading to the generation of stray light. Both doming and contrast performance are important for the quality of a colour display tube (1).

Abstract: A color cathode ray tube has a shadow mask. The shadow mask is composed of an almost rectangular mask body and an almost rectangular mask frame. The mask body has an effective surface facing a fluorescent screen, a non-aperture section surrounding the effective surface, and a bent skirt section formed on the periphery of the non-aperture section. The mask frame has a sidewall section provided on the skirt section of the mask body. In the shadow mask of such a configuration, a step section having a step in the direction perpendicular to the skirt section of the mask body is formed. With this configuration, the strength with which the curved surface of the effective surface of the shadow mask is enhanced, which prevents the color purity from deteriorating due to deformation and facilitates the formation of the shadow mask.
