Abstract: An object of the present invention is to reliably carry out warning braking in a situation where the warning braking is needed and a crew can recognize the warning braking, and prevent the crew from feeling an unnatural sensation due to the warning braking in a situation where the warning braking is needed but the crew cannot effectively recognize the warning braking. If an obstacle is present ahead of the vehicle, the driver does not carry out brake operation, the driver is looking aside, and the vehicle may collide with the obstacle, the maximum target deceleration Gbt2max for the warning braking is computed. If automatic travel control is not carried out or if automatic travel control is being carried out and its target deceleration Gbt4 is less than a reference value Gbt4s smaller than the maximum target deceleration Gbt2max, the warning braking is carried out.

  • Patent number: 7471190
Abstract: An anti-theft vehicle alarm system includes an acceleration sensor acting as a tilt sensor, a microcomputer, a first power source for supplying a first voltage to the microcomputer, and a second power source for supplying a second voltage to the acceleration sensor. The microcomputer calculates a tilt angle of a vehicle from output of the acceleration sensor and activates an alarm in accordance with the tilt angle. If the second voltage is outside a predetermined voltage range, for example, due to a reduction in battery voltage, the microcomputer temporarily stops to activate the alarm to prevent a false alarm. The microcomputer monitors the second voltage not the battery voltage. Thus, even when the second voltage is outside the threshold range, for example, due to a breakdown in the second power source, the false alarm can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 7190260
Abstract: A vehicle anti-collision system and method for is disclosed which provides drivers with additional time in which to react to significant roadway events which often precede accidents. The simplest implementation of the system and method (Phase I) employs a brake pedal mounted sensor packet for determining how hard a driver is braking. Hard braking information is relayed to approaching drivers by means of the reverse lights of the vehicle. Additional implementation phases (II through IV) are described wherein event information is communicated between vehicles over a communications link. Furthermore, additional vehicle information, such as an impact, swerving, emergency light activation, and roadway hazards may be communicated to approaching drivers by the communications link whereby drivers need not see the vehicle that has slammed on its brakes, or otherwise has created or responded to an event, in order to avoid an accident.

  • Patent number: 7119669
Abstract: A portable electronic device, like a cellular telephone is capable of detecting collisions between vehicles and notifying the proper authorities. The device includes a microprocessor and memory, in addition to an accelerometer and global positioning systems receiver. The memory includes at least one filter for screening out false positives, which are false collision detections. In one embodiment, the device determines its velocity. It then checks to see if its velocity falls within a range associated with moving vehicles. If so, the device monitors the accelerometer. When acceleration values in excess of a predetermined threshold are detected, the device pauses and again checks its velocity. If the velocity has fallen from the range associated with moving vehicles to a range associated with a vehicle that has sustained a collision, the device notifies emergency personnel that a collision has occurred.

  • Patent number: 7075423
Abstract: Disclosed is a multi-function illuminating display for a motor vehicle combining an inverse function illuminating engine power indicator, a brake light, directional lights, and park lights. The segmented engine power display is fully illuminated at engine idle. Power display illumination decreases incrementally from each end as engine power increases, with minimum illumination at display center at maximum selected and adjusted power, and no illumination when power is above that point. Decreasing engine power to the maximum power point illuminates the center segments, followed by incrementally illuminating segments adjacent the center, until all segments are illuminated. Center segment illumination is of minimum intensity with increasing intensity of left and right side LEDs. The brake light inhibits power indication and illuminates the display as a brake light. Chasing directional lights have priority over the power indication and park lights, and are brighter than the park lights.

  • Patent number: 7019632
Abstract: A vehicle's operator can signal both the intended relative braking effort, and changes thereto, using a signal with a proportionately scaled and reactive display. A sensor measuring the current proportionate intensity of the intended and applied braking effort is attached to a vehicle's braking system. This sensor sends a signal to the associated external display (which may comprise multiple, separated areas). Each display area then shows that portion of its area commensurate with, or proportional to, the intensity of the intended and applied braking effort. The sensor, signal, and display(s) regularly repeat this at rapid intervals, thereby keeping the display responsive to and in accordance with the current intended and applied braking effort. In one enhancement, the outer limit of the display is activated when any braking effort is made, to enable rapid evaluation by any viewer between the relative effort applied and the potential full effort.
