Abstract: A lane departure detection computing device for a roadside device is disclosed. The computing device is configured to execute instructions stored in a memory to: calculate a first path geometry relating to a first vehicle traveling in a first lane; calculate a second path geometry relating to a second vehicle traveling in a second lane different from the first lane; evaluate coextensive portions of the first path geometry and the second path geometry for parallelism; if the coextensive portions of the first path geometry and the second path geometry evaluated for parallelism are not parallel, determine that one of the first vehicle and the second vehicle is executing a lane departure; and operate a vehicle configured for autonomous operation responsive to the determination that one of the first vehicle and the second vehicle is executing a lane departure.

Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods include automatically activating and/or deactivating a vehicle's standard brake lights in response to signals indicative of the vehicle's speed. The signals indicative of a vehicle's speed are received from a vehicle communications bus. In some embodiments, a deceleration value is calculated based on a series of signals indicative of a vehicle's speed received from the vehicle communications bus. The calculated deceleration value is compared with a first predetermined deceleration threshold. If the calculated deceleration value is greater than the first predetermined deceleration threshold, a brake light activation signal is generated. When the vehicle no longer is decelerating or the computed deceleration value falls below a second predetermined deceleration threshold, a brake light deactivation signal is generated. The automatic activation/deactivation of a vehicle's standard brake light may advantageously provide improved safety to following vehicles and drivers.

Abstract: An indicator system and method for a vehicle is provided that uses forward-directed indicators to signal to pedestrians when the vehicle is yielding to crossing pedestrians. The system monitors the vehicle brakes and the speed of the vehicle. One or more sets of indicator lights are deployed along the forward portion of the vehicle. When the vehicle brakes are applied, one set of indicator lights is energized. When the vehicle speed slows below a defined speed to indicate yielding, either a second set of indicators illuminate or the first set is pulsed. The second set of indicators is a different color than the first, and can pulse or energize statically. The indicator lights are preferably green in color when energized to indicate yielding to pedestrians, providing a positive signal that it is safe to cross the road in front of the vehicle.

Abstract: An apparatus for recognizing lane partition lines on opposite sides of a traveling lane of a vehicle based on a forward image captured by a camera mounted in the vehicle. In the apparatus, an allowable range limiter is configured to, based on a learned value of a lane width learned by a lane width learner, limit allowable ranges for the respective lane partition lines, where in the allowable ranges the respective lane partition lines are allowed to be detected in the forward image. A lane change determiner is configured to determine whether or not there is a lane change made by the vehicle. The allowable range limiter is further configured to, if it is determined by the lane change determiner that there is a lane change, enlarge at least one of the allowable ranges limited by the allowable range limiter based on the learned value of the lane width.
