Patent number: 7387235Abstract: Memory contents in an electronic key are re-programmed using a base station from a multi-byte pre-existing or default value. If writing the new secret code value is interrupted and results in a partially-written value then a first recovery code is formed comprising a leading portion having values matching a corresponding portion of the pre-existing secret code and a trailing portion having values matching a corresponding portion of the new secret code. The first recovery code is transmitted to the electronic key for comparison with the stored secret code value. The electronic key compares a received secret code value in response to the first recovery code with the stored secret code value. If the comparison detects a non-match, then interaction with the base station is suspended. If the comparison detects a match, then interaction with the base station is continued in order to accept the new secret code value after re-transmission in full from the base station.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2005Date of Patent: June 17, 2008Assignee: Lear CorporationInventors: Carl L. Patent number: 7366677Abstract: Cars of a car rental system are made operable by having a renter present a digital key issued from the car rental system. The digital key specifies the starting date and time of a given rental transaction, and the identification of the car the key is for. The digital key is further signed by the car rental system for authenticity. A prospective renter makes online reservation over the Web and downloads into a portable storage device a digital key which can be used to operate the reserved car on the day the reservation is made for. On the pickup day, the renter goes to the car and inserts the portable storage device into a slot on the car. Upon successful verification of the digital key, the car is enabled and the renter can keep the car until he or she wants to return the car. The return process starts by having the renter obtain a invalidated digital key from the car. Once the rental car invalidates the digital key provided by the renter, the renter can no longer operate the rental car.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 2000Date of Patent: April 29, 2008Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Te-Kai Liu, Michael C. Publication number: 20080068205Abstract: A method for training a trainable transmitter in a vehicle that includes receiving a request to enter a training mode of the trainable transmitter from a user, beginning a training mode of the trainable transmitter, receiving a control signal from an original transmitter associated with a remote control system, detecting a frequency and control data of the control signal. The method further includes determining if the control signal is a fixed code signal or a rolling code signal. If the control signal is a fixed code signal, storing the detected frequency and control data. If the control signal is a rolling code signal, comparing the detected control signal frequency to a plurality of predetermined frequencies and based on the comparison, shifting the detected frequency to match one of the predetermined frequencies.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2006Publication date: March 20, 2008Inventor: Todd R. Patent number: 7327216Abstract: A secret key is programmed into a key transponder from a base station wherein the key transponder stores a fixed ID, a first default key segment stored in a first memory page, and a second default key segment stored in a second memory page. The secret key comprises a first new secret key segment to be stored in the first memory page of the key transponder and a second new secret key segment to be stored in the second memory page of the key transponder. A mutual authentication process is initially conducted using the default key. Write commands are sent to the key transponder in transferring each key segment. Write acknowledgement signals and confirmatory reading back of the data are employed for ensuring proper storage of the secret key. Recovery from the most probable types of errors enables successful programming of key transponders in an efficient manner with a low loss rate.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2005Date of Patent: February 5, 2008Assignee: Lear CorporationInventors: Riad Ghabra, Gurpreet Singh

Publication number: 20080012684Abstract: A programmable key for use in a security system for protecting items of merchandise has a housing, a power supply mounted in the housing, a logic control circuit which includes a controller, a wireless communication circuit and a security disarm code (SDC) memory. The key has visual indicators such as an LED which is operatively connected to the logic control circuit and pulsed to indicate the state of the SDC. The control circuit includes a timer which has a preset time limit programmed therein, which invalidates the stored SDC if not refreshed by a remote programming source within a certain time period. The logic circuit further includes a counter which counts the number of activations of a control switch, and which permanently deactivates the control circuit upon reaching a certain count value to ensure that the internal battery has sufficient power to maintain the key operational. The wireless communication circuit preferably is infrared (IR) or radio frequency (RF) controlled.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2006Publication date: January 17, 2008Applicant: Alpha Security Products, Inc.Inventors: Christopher J. Publication number: 20070290798Abstract: An access device is provided for a system that has a plurality of locks that are each configured to receive instructions and to energize a lock mechanism to unlock the lock and a computer that is disposed at a remote location from the locks and that is connected to a primary wireless communication path. The access device includes at least one key configured for communicating with the computer via the primary wireless communication path and to communicate with the locks over a secondary wireless path. The at least one key is also configured to send a predefined text message for receipt by the computer and wherein the predefined text message provides an indication to the computer as to at least one other key whereto the predefined text message is to be sent.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2006Publication date: December 20, 2007Inventors: Wayne Floyd Larson, Michael Harkins, Casey Fale, Teri Lynne Briskey, Jerry Switzer

Patent number: 7267278Abstract: A system and method for providing pharmaceutical information to a patient is disclosed. The invention includes electronically identifying the pharmaceutical product dispensed to the patient with an identification device and electronically prompting the patient with a message using a first output. The message provides the patient with the opportunity to accept or decline the pharmaceutical information by interacting with an input device. If the patient decides to accept the pharmaceutical information, the pharmaceutical information is provided to the patient through a second output. A computer-based apparatus is also disclosed for providing pharmaceutical information to the patient. The computer-based apparatus includes a central processing unit configured to run an executable software program configured to control the functions of peripheral devices operatively connected to the computer-based apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2003Date of Patent: September 11, 2007Inventor: Robert Lammle
