  • Patent number: 7522044
Abstract: A monitoring system includes a transmitter (102) with two transmit modules (208, 210) and a receiver (104) with two receive modules (212, 214). Each of the transmit modules (208, 210) generates an optical signal modulated at a unique frequency. The optical signals are transmitted across a roadway (112) and are detected by the receive modules (212, 214). When a vehicle (110) moves between the transmitter (102) and receiver (104), the optical signals are blocked. The receiver (104) generates timestamped make and break events corresponding to the blocking and unblocking of the signals, and these are used to determine parameters for the vehicle (110) such as velocity and vehicle classification. Because each signal is modulated at a different frequency, each receive module (212, 214) can distinguish the signals received from each of the transmit modules (208, 210), allowing the lane position of the vehicle (110) in a multi-lane roadway (112) to be determined.

  • Patent number: 7292743
Abstract: There is provided a portable fiber optic cable based intrusion detection system in which support posts are driven into the earth to define a perimeter. A portably mountable fiber optic cable attenuator is installed to each support post. The fiber optic cable is wrapped around a first compressible member of the attenuator and then looped through a second compressible member. A retractable rod having a cross arm there through is elevated through the second compressible member to form an upper loop in fiber optic cable. The retractable rod is then retracted leaving the remaining upper loop. An external force on the fiber optic cable diminishes the upper loop about the cross arm thereby creating a microbend in the fiber optic cable. A light detector senses a reduced light intensity, caused by the microbend, at the end of the fiber optic cable which triggers an alarm.

Abstract: A detector mountable on either a planar wall or an interior corner and having an adjustable field of view. The detector includes first and second sensors positioned to provide a horizontal field of view defining an angle of approximately 180 degrees. At least one blinder has a first position wherein the first and second sensors have a horizontal field of view defining an angle of approximately 180 degrees and a second position wherein the first and second sensors have a horizontal field of view defining an angle of approximately 90 degrees. A biasing member biases the blinder toward a first one of the first and second positions. A positioning member has a first member position wherein the positioning member biases the blinder toward the other of the first and second positions and a second member position wherein the biasing member biases the blinder into the first one of the first and second positions.

Abstract: A system for improving the safety of a room occupied by a patient includes a sensor for monitoring when the patient is out of bed. The sensor sends a signal that gives an alert to a care giver that the patient is out of bed. Lights in the room are slowly illuminated to provide light for the patient. A second sensor may sense when the patient has returned to bed and correspondingly dim the lights. The history of the patient being in and out of bed, and of the care giver responding to alerts may be recorded in a log. A programmable micro controller is used to control the system.

  • Patent number: 7227465
Abstract: A security bar providing improved security from breach is obtained with the use of a fiber optic cable longitudinally inserted in a hollowed out cavity thereof. Monitoring of the security bar to identify attempts at breach thereof may be achieved by connecting an optical light source to one end of the fiber optic cable and a light monitoring device (i.e., an optical receiver) at the other end. In this manner, a breach of the security bar is identified when the optical receiver fails to receive the light generated by the optical light source. In one embodiment, an isolator which consists of a material that is soft enough to absorb a potential shock but hard enough to break or splinter if the security bar is substantially deformed (e.g., wood) surrounds the fiber optic cable.
