Dither Or Halftone Patents (Class 345/596)
  • Patent number: 7869094
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for selectively dithering only a subset of a digital image. One or more ranges of digits are selected for dithering. Only those pixels having digits within the selected range(s) in the digital image are dithered. The image is printed after being selectively dithered. Digits may be selected for dithering if they have values within the range(s) of one or more non-monotonic regions of a printer transfer function. Dithering may be performed on the subset of the digital image by applying a nonlinear transformation is applied to the image and adding a dither pattern to the transformed image. The result is quantized, and the inverse of the nonlinear transformation is applied to the quantized image to produce a dithered image. The nonlinear transformation is constructed such that the effects of the dither pattern appear only in that subset of the image having digits in the selected range(s).

  • Patent number: 7864192
Abstract: A dithering system includes a linear transformer, a dither data generator, an adder and a shifter. The transformer linearly transforms M bit input data using a linear function having a predetermined gradient in order to generate and output M bit transform data. The dither data generator generates and outputs M?N bit dither data. The adder adds the M bit transform data and the M?N bit dither data to generate and output M bit correction data. The shifter cuts off the bottom M?N bits of the M bit correction data in order to generate and output the N bit output data. The dithering system and associated dithering method widely disperses an error generated due to a physical limit of a data bit that can be expressed by a low gray scale system throughout the entirety of the gray scales when high gray scale image data is converted to low gray scale image data. This is done without using a lookup table which avoids using valuable chip area.

A combination of LPQ and error diffusion, and a combination of LPQ and spatial dithering, is provided. To combine LPQ and spatial dithering, the spatial dithering is regarded as a two-step processing, a mapping and a simple rounding. To combine LPQ and dithering together, a rounding step is replaced by the LPQ algorithm in the combination. Further a method is provided for post-processing which is applicable to both cases to reduce the color perception for grayscale image.

Abstract: Response fidelity problems appear for some specific video levels at PDP borders. The reason is that some cells at the border of the PDP panel are not completely closed and pollute when switched ON neighbouring cells being OFF. Therefore, it is suggested to encode the video levels in the border area in a specific way. Especially, for critical sub-fields within the code it is forbidden to insert a binary 0 between two binary 1. Thus, the neighbourhood of critical sub-fields being ON and OFF is avoided. Preferably, the specific border coding is performed under the control of an average power management and codewords being not used are recreated by dithering.

Abstract: Systems and techniques for processing sequences of video images involve receiving, on a computer, data corresponding to a sequence of video images detected by an image sensor. The received data is processed using a graphics processor to adjust one or more visual characteristics of the video images corresponding to the received data. The received data can include video data defining pixel values and ancillary data relating to settings on the image sensor. The video data can be processed in accordance with ancillary data to adjust the visual characteristics, which can include filtering the images, blending images, and/or other processing operations.

Abstract: A method for compressing image data that are processed by a pseudo gradation process using a dither pattern is provided. The method includes the steps of dividing the image data into predetermined areas, determining whether or not a dot arrangement pattern of the image data in each area matches the dither pattern that was used in the pseudo gradation process, determining a representative value concerning density of the image data in the area if the dot arrangement pattern matches the dither pattern, and making compressed data by using the determined representative value.

  • Patent number: 7583837
Abstract: A system converts grayscale image data into device independent image data that mimics highlight printing of the grayscale image at a full color printer. The system is preferably implemented in a plug-in for a document control program so a data object associated with the document control program may be used to generate device independent color space data from the grayscale data. A data converter uses a device independent profile to convert the device independent color space data to a second device independent color space that corresponds to a selected highlight for printing. When a device dependent profile associated with a printing station converts the second device independent color space data for printing, the resulting four color data emulates highlight printing of the original grayscale image. Thus, a full color printer may be used for grayscale printing, duotone printing, and full color printing without requiring tone or ink changes.

Abstract: A method for enhancing an image includes applying an auto-level transformation to an original image to form a first image, applying an auto-contrast transformation to the original image to form a second image, and applying an auto-brightness transformation to the original image to form a third image. The method further includes applying a color cast correction to the first, the second, and the third images to generate a first group of images, applying a gamma correction to the first group of images to generate a second group of images, applying a sharpening correction to the second group of images to generate a third group of images, and presenting the third group of images to a user to select a final result.

Abstract: In a digital reproduction system incorporating a single pass scanner, accurate image processing results from processing a subset of grayscale image data. More specifically, scanlines that correspond to the leading edge of a document are stored and processed to detect skew and to obtain an appropriate correction. The lead edge correction is then applied to the entire grayscale image. Accordingly, the present systems and methods eliminate skew from grayscale images in real-time. The corrected image is rendered to binary and stored in electronic pre-collation memory and cropping, masking and other image editing operations can be performed on the binary image data before the image is printed.

Abstract: An information processing apparatus capable of storing more data to a remaining region of a storage portion excluding a frame buffer region while displaying an image by an image display portion, is provided. When free space of a system storage portion has become below a predetermined value, a reduction in number of gray scales of the image results in a reduction in a data amount of image data stored in a display data storage region and a reduction in capacity of the display data storage region. This makes it possible to reduce the data amount of image data and increase the free space of the system storage portion while keeping the size of the image displayed by an image display portion.

  • Patent number: 7551318
Abstract: The gray axis is adjusted such that an optimal representation can be achieved for low saturation colors close to the gray axis. A test pattern including a plurality of images, which have different color tones is printed, and a user selects a most desirable image. The gray axis of an image recording system is adjusted depending on which image is selected. Each of the plurality of images of the test pattern is a photographic color image represented mainly by low saturation colors close to achromatic colors along the gray axis. In accordance with the selected image, the gradation adjustment is performed for each ink color of the image recording system thereby adjusting the gray axis and the tone of colors close to the gray axis.
