Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for nonlinear scaling of video images. To match the aspect ratios of a video image and the target display area, at least one embodiment of the present invention scales the video image according to one or more nonlinear functions along the horizontal direction and/or the vertical direction. In one embodiment, the nonlinear functions are such that the original aspect ratio of the video image is preserved near the center region (or strip) of the image and the image is gradually stretched (or compressed) as it is mapped to the edges. In one example, the scaling is implemented by the texture mapping functionality of OpenGL using graphics hardware. In one embodiment of the present invention, the nonlinear mapping is constructed according to a polynomial mapping; and, the coefficients of the polynomial are adjustable by a user to trade off distortion between the image center and the image edges, giving the user control over the location and the amount of distortion.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided that employ one or more of a variety of techniques for reducing the time required to display high resolution images on a high dynamic range display having a light source layer and a display layer. In one technique, the image resolution is reduced, an effective luminance pattern is determined for the reduced resolution image, and the resolution of the effective luminance pattern is then increased to the resolution of the display layer. In another technique, the light source layer's point spread function is decomposed into a plurality of components, and an effective luminance pattern is determined for each component. The effective luminance patterns are then combined to produce a total effective luminance pattern. Additional image display time reduction techniques are provided.

Abstract: A circuit and a method for maintaining the aspect ratio of images when there is a difference in format between image sources and display panels is provided. Lines are added in the vertical direction both at the top and at the bottom of the display panel in order to make the display panel have the same aspect ratio as the input image. A line enable signal is used to expand the vertical lines to maintain aspect ratio. Previously, the period of line enable signals could not be programmed to vary sufficiently to yield the necessary expansion to allow the aspect ratio of the display panel image to match the aspect ratio of the source image. This design allows the period of the line enable signal to vary enough to match all reasonable aspect ratios of input images.

Abstract: An object is to provide an image signal processing device capable of converting digital image signals into analog image signals using a circuit of small scale. Addition high-order bit pixel data is generated by adding, to high-order bit pixel data comprising an high-order consecutive bits of input pixel data, a value corresponding to the least significant bit digit of the high-order bit pixel data. In a prescribed period, during a time period corresponding to a value of low-order bit pixel data comprising low-order consecutive bits of the input pixel data, the addition high-order bit pixel data is taken to be the data for D/A conversion, and in other period, the high-order bit pixel data is taken to be the data for D/A conversion. By means of this configuration, even when the resolution of a D/A converter is lower than the resolution required by the input pixel data, the resolution of the image ultimately viewed during the prescribed period is equivalent to the resolution required by the input pixel data.

When the horizontal period is above an upper limit threshold value in a state that the LCD panel is driven in a VGA mode, the mode judging circuit judges the resolution of the image signal as SVGA. Even when frequency modulation is applied to the input signal, the modulation is absorbed by the width between the lower limit threshold value and the upper limit threshold value, whereby the resolution of the image signal can be reliably judged. Abstract: In an image display apparatus in which a display attribute of a specific area of the display can be modified based on an information input from a processor, a resolution of the image is determined from the input vertical and horizontal synchronization signals, dot clocks are generated by multiplying the horizontal synchronization signals depending on the determined resolution, a horizontal display period in one horizontal synchronization signal is detected using a signal in the image signals input from the processor, the actual count value of the dot clocks in the detected horizontal display period is compared with a standard value thereof in the horizontal display period in one line at the determined resolution of the image and the multiplication number of a dot clock generation circuit is corrected so that the count value coincides with the standard value to modify the display attribute of the specific area of the display.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for enhancing the resolution of a display unit by adding any one of the two-channels of the three primitive color (r1, g1, b1, r2, g2, and b2) signals output from the column driving unit and dividing the sum by 2, and generating a new channel between the two channels. Such channel outputs a new three primitive color (R1, G1, B1) signal. These three primitive colors are also located between the two pixels of the primitive image data matrix to improve the display resolution and image smoothness and to enhance the display quality by less channel of the column driving unit.

Abstract: The present invention relates to display adjustment and balance methods for liquid crystal displays, LCDs. A wide-range display position adjustment method is described. Compared with the prior art liquid crystal display controllers, the embodiments of this invention are not limited by the width of the vertical and horizontal front and back porch regions of the timing diagrams. These porch values are a function of the display chip technology. The display location control of this invention is independent of the limits of the front and back porch times. The embodiments of this invention facilitate the design of a display position control circuit which allows the image display to be rolled around anywhere on the panel.

  • Patent number: 6906725
Abstract: The present invention provides a simulation for displaying a screen formulated from data, such as a FLIR sensor, relying on color definitions that are more readily supported by common image generators, most preferably 8-bit per channel RGB color processing and video output. The system has an image generator that transmits a video signal of at least two digital data channels, and a display system with a combiner circuit and a visual display device. The bit sets of the channels each represent a respective value of the data variable at a resolution for that channel, and the bit sets of the second channel each represent a respective value of the data variable at a second resolution higher than the resolution of the first channel. Combiner circuitry receives the channels of video output and processes these channels to select the channel which represents the accurate data unaffected by clamping.

  • Patent number: 6839903
Abstract: A method of selecting a portion of a block of data for display based on characteristics of a display device. The method comprises several steps. In the first step, a block of Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data is received at a communication device adapted to process this data. Next, an input is received at the communication device regarding an appearance of the display device. The communication device can be a set-top box. The appearance of the display includes, but is not limited to, the resolution, the aspect ratio (AR), and the physical size of the display. Based on these inputs, the communication device next selects a portion, more or fewer columns or rows, of the block of EPG data to be displayed on the display device. The portion of the EPG data selected is formatted and communicated to the display device, e.g. television, for viewing by the user.

  • Patent number: 6809716
Abstract: An apparatus for protecting a screen of the plate type image display apparatus is disclosed, in which an A/D converter converts analog R, G, B image signals into digital R, G, B image signals according a sampling clock. Also, a scaler converts the digital R, G, B image signals into a frame unit, able to be displayed on an LCD module, such as a flat panel display, and transmits the signals corresponding to a signal input timing of the LCD module. A frequency detecting part detects an output frequency of the scaler, and a microcomputer determines whether the frequency detected by the frequency detecting part is within a prescribed frequency range. In this way, a power supply for the LCD module is controlled. Thus, the power supply for the LCD module is shut off when an erroneous frequency is detected and a normal screen is displayed when a normal frequency is received so that the LCD module is better protected. The LCD module is thus protected, which could enhance reliability.
