Image Superposition By Optical Means (e.g., Heads-up Display) Patents (Class 345/7)
  • Patent number: 10409077
Abstract: A head-up display includes a projector and an optical combiner configured to reflect light from the projector while allowing other wavelengths of light to pass through the optical combiner. The projector has two or more image sources, and two or more optical components, each of which is associated with a corresponding one of the image sources. In a typical implementation, the two or more optical components are closely situated to approximate an effective aperture that is larger than the actual aperture of either optical component. In such an implementation, since the actual aperture of each respective optical element is smaller than the larger effective aperture, it is generally much easier to correct for optical aberrations and the like, than it would be if a single optical element with a larger actual aperture were used.

Abstract: An image generating section reads image data from an image storing section to generate an original image in keeping with the attitude of a head-mounted display. A lens distortion correcting section generates a primary image by correcting beforehand the original image in a manner canceling out the distortion thereof that appears when viewed through lenses of the head-mounted display. A different image embedding section generates an embedded image by embedding a different image into an unused area of a rectangular format for transmitting the primary image. An HDMI transmitting section transfers the embedded image to the head-mounted display.

Abstract: A head mounted display (HMD) includes a display and a pancake lens block. The display with a circular polarizer, comprised of an initial linear polarizer and a first quarter-waveplate with polarizer transmission axis 45° from the waveplate fast axis, emits polarized light. The pancake lens includes a partial reflector, a second quarter-waveplate, and a beam splitting polarizer. The pancake lens receives polarized light from the display. Light propagating through the pancake lens undergoes multiple reflections and transmissions achieved by coordinating changes in polarization of light through these optical elements. To mitigate parasitic light from degrading image quality of the HMD, the fast axis orientation of the first quarter-waveplate is oriented 90° relative to the fast axis orientation of the second quarter-waveplate, and thus the transmission axis of the first polarizer is oriented 90° relative to the transmission axis of the beam splitting polarizer.

Abstract: Collaborative scene sharing for overcoming visual obstructions is provided. Video feeds of a scene are obtained from multiple devices viewing the scene from different angle. An obstruction obstructs portion(s) of the scene from view by a device. An aggregation grid that partitions views of the scene into cells is established and used in providing an aggregated view of the scene to the device. This includes identifying cell(s) of the aggregation grid for which the view by the device is obstructed by the obstruction, and providing to the device video portion(s) obtained from video feed(s) from the multiple devices. The video portion(s) correspond to the cell(s) for which the view by the device is obstructed, and the video feeds from which the video portions are obtained are from other device(s), of the multiple devices, for which the view for the cell(s) is unobstructed.

Abstract: Example embodiments include an example method that involves detecting, via a gesture-detection sensor of a head-mountable device (HMD), a first gesture in a buttonless-touch region. The buttonless-touch region is located behind an ear of a wearer of the HMD. The method also includes activating a voice interface responsive to detecting the first gesture and, while the voice interface is activated, receiving an audio input signal via a microphone. The method further includes detecting, via the gesture-detection sensor, a second gesture in the buttonless-touch region and, responsive to detecting the second gesture, deactivating the voice interface. The method still further includes processing the audio input signal to determine a voice command having a start-point corresponding to the detected first gesture and an end-point corresponding to the detected second gesture.

  • Patent number: 10268919
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for tracking and discerning objects using their saliency. In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the tracking of objects is based on a combination of object saliency and additional sources of signal about object identity. Under certain simplifying assumptions, the present disclosure allows for robust tracking of simple objects with limited processing resources. In one or more variants, efficient implementation of the methods described allow sensors (e.g., cameras) to be used on board a robot (or autonomous vehicle) on a mobile determining platform, such as to capture images to determine the presence and/or identity of salient objects. Such determination of salient objects allow for e.g., adjustments to vehicle or other moving object trajectory.

Abstract: Examples of a light field metrology system for use with a display are disclosed. The light field metrology may capture images of a projected light field, and determine focus depths (or lateral focus positions) for various regions of the light field using the captured images. The determined focus depths (or lateral positions) may then be compared with intended focus depths (or lateral positions), to quantify the imperfections of the display. Based on the measured imperfections, an appropriate error correction may be performed on the light field to correct for the measured imperfections. The display can be an optical display element in a head mounted display, for example, an optical display element capable of generating multiple depth planes or a light field display.
