Image Superposition By Optical Means (e.g., Heads-up Display) Patents (Class 345/7)
  • Patent number: 10015473
Abstract: First, the interval between a left virtual camera and a right virtual camera is determined based on the relative position and the relative orientation of an outer imaging section (left) with respect to a marker, which are calculated from a result of marker recognition in the left real world image, and on the relative position and the relative orientation of an outer imaging section (right) with respect to the marker, which are calculated from a result of marker recognition in the right real world image. After the interval between the left virtual camera and the right virtual camera is determined, the positions and the orientations of the left virtual camera and the right virtual camera are determined based on the determined interval such that the relationship between the position and the orientation of the left virtual camera, and the position and the orientation of the right virtual camera is ideal.

Abstract: A display apparatus includes an optical image projection system, first optical propagation system, and second optical propagation system. The optical image projection system projects image light to infinity. The first optical propagation system propagates the image light projected from the optical image projection system in the x-direction. The first optical propagation system deflects a portion of the image light. The second optical propagation system includes a second input deflector that deflects the image light deflected by the first output deflector. The second optical propagation system propagates the image light deflected by the second input deflector in the y-direction and deflects a portion of the image light. The light beam width in the y-direction of the image light emitted from the optical image projection system and the length in the y-direction of the first light guide are greater than the length in the y-direction of the second input deflector.

Abstract: Devices and methods are described herein that use a first solid figure element, a polarizing beam splitter, and a second solid figure element to reduce speckle in projected images. Specifically, laser light is generated and split into two portions having orthogonal polarizations. The first portion of laser light is internally reflected off at least three internal faces of the second solid figure element and is then spatially recombined with the second portion of laser light in the first solid figure element. The difference in path length followed by the two portions generates a temporal incoherence in the recombined laser light beam, and that temporal incoherence reduces speckle in the projected image.

Abstract: Devices and methods are described that provide for scanning surfaces and generating 3-dimensional point clouds that describe the depth of the measured surface at each point. In general, the devices and methods utilize scanning mirror(s) that reflect a laser beam into a pattern of scan lines. When the raster pattern of scan lines is directed at a surface, reflections of the laser beam from the surface are received and used to the generate 3-dimensional point clouds that describe the measured surface depth at each point. The motion of the scanning mirror(s) can be dynamically adjusted to modify the characteristics of the resulting 3-dimensional point cloud of the surface. For example, the adjustment of the scanning mirror motion can modify the resolution or data density of the resulting 3-dimensional point cloud that describes the measured depths of the surface.

Abstract: The invention comprises a virtual window system that creates a visual coherency between the image of the patient and his or her anatomy and the patient by aligning the image of the patient anatomy on the display to the patient and presenting the image to the user that feels as if the user is looking directly into the patient through the display. The invention is designed to also display medical devices, such as a minimally invasive tool. The system substantially unifies the coordinate systems of the patient, the medical device, the display, and the physician's hands. The invention creates a visual coherency between the motion of the medical device in the image and the motion of the physician's hands manipulating the device. This invention also creates a visual coherency between the motion of the image in the display and of that display.

Abstract: A thermoplastic film for a laminated-glass pane, having a non-linear continuous wedge insert in both a vertical and horizontal direction in some sections, is described. In the vertical direction, the laminated-glass pane is, from the perspective of an observer, further at a lower end than at an upper end. In a laminated-glass pane equipped with the thermoplastic film, the thermoplastic film is located between two glass layers. The thermoplastic film has at least a first section having a wedge angle profile that is continuous and non-linear in the vertical and horizontal direction, such that ghost images from a head-up display are minimized in the region of the first section. The thermoplastic film also minimizes double images in transmission in the first section and in further sections.

Abstract: Introduced herein are various techniques for displaying virtual and augmented reality content via a head-mounted display (HMD). The techniques can be used to improve the effectiveness of the HMD, as well as the general experience and comfort of users of the HMD. A binocular HMD system may present visual stabilizers to each eye that allow users to more easily fuse the digital content seen by each eye. In some embodiments the visual stabilizers are positioned within the digital content so that they converge to a shared location when viewed by a user, while in other embodiments the visual stabilizers are mapped to different locations within the user's field of view (e.g., peripheral areas) and are visually distinct from one another. These techniques allow the user to more easily fuse the digital content, thereby decreasing the eye fatigue and strain typically experienced when viewing virtual or augmented reality content.
