Abstract: A display device capable of applying reverse driving voltage for a light emitting element to a light emitting element every certain period for prolonging light emitting element's life and burning out a shorted portion. Besides a path for supplying forward current to the light emitting element, a path for supplying reverse current is provided. A driving transistor is provided in the former path while a transistor (AC transistor) is provided in the latter path, thereby a switching between the two paths is controlled. The AC transistor has a rate L/W of a channel length L to a channel width W smaller than that of the driving transistor. Accordingly, current flowing into the light emitting element can flow into the AC transistor in the case of reverse driving voltage being applied to the light emitting element.

Abstract: Backlight support is provided for flat panel displays through use of phospho-luminescent materials. Photo-luminescent materials are integrated into a flat panel display such as an LCD display as a back panel substrate or by embedding in display pixels. When ambient light levels exceed a predetermined threshold the material is activated allowing a reduction in active backlight power. The active backlight may be provided by an electrically supported system such as an ELP, a light pipe, an LED, etc. By reducing the power of the active backlight in an analog manner or through decreasing the duty cycle, an overall power savings is accomplished for the display. By embedding different photo-luminescent materials that operate at different wavelengths, color display may be enhanced while reducing power consumption. Display properties, such as transparency, contrast, etc., may be adjusted to affect phospho-luminescent backlight support.

Abstract: A calibration method for calibrating a fixed format emissive display device having a plurality of pixels is described In the display each pixel comprises at least three sub-pixels for emitting light of different real primary colours. The method comprises determining, for each real primary colour separately, a virtual target primary colour which can be reached by at least 80% of the pixels of the display, determining a colour gamut defined by the determined virtual target primary colours, and adjusting the drive currents to the sub-pixels to achieve a colour inside the determined colour gamut. A display having an extended range of colours is described, i.e. a gamut of colours that is more than the gamut provided by an n virtual primary colour based electronic multicolour display, as measured on a chromaticity diagram, for example. A color and/or brightness uniform image can be produced with this fixed format emissive display device.

Abstract: A technique for controlling a Light Emitting Diode (LED) based light system involves driving individual light sources that make up the LED-based light system at non-overlapping intervals so that light source-specific feedback signals can be generated in response to the emitted light. The light source-specific feedback signals are then used to individually adjust the light sources to achieve desired luminance and chrominance characteristics of the emitted light.

Abstract: A display that includes energy sensors within the display itself is disclosed. An Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) can be made to operate both as a light emitter and as an energy detector. When forward biased with an appropriate driving signal, the OLED emits light via electroluminescence, which can be used to make a portion of an image on the display. In another mode, the OLED can detect energy by converting incoming photons or energy into an electrical signal by the photoelectric effect. By operating OLEDs in the display in both emissive and sensing modes, energy that shines on the display, such as from an outside source can be detected at the same time an image is shown. Additionally, a display including OLEDs can detect light energy generated by the display itself.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a user-selected color point is received. RGB tristimulus values are then derived for the color point. It is also determined whether the user-selected color point is outside a color selection range of the LED light source and, if so, an error flag is set. Pulse width modulated signals for a plurality of LED drivers for the LED light source are also generated. In another embodiment, tristimulus values representing a color of light produced by an LED light source are received. The received tristimulus values are then compared to tristimulus values corresponding to a user-identified color point. In response to the comparison, pulse width modulated signals are generated for a plurality of LED drivers for the LED light source. After a predetermined number of repetitions of these actions, an error flag is set if the user-selected color point has not been achieved by the LED light source.
