  • Patent number: 11295540
Abstract: A sensor calibration target includes dark markings on a light substrate. The dark markings absorb more heat from a heat source than the light substrate, and are visually distinguishable from the light substrate. Thus, the dark markings are discernable by the both a camera and an infrared sensor of a vehicle during vehicle sensor calibration. The sensor calibration target may otherwise non-metallic but include a metallic feature for calibrating a radio detection and ranging (RADAR) sensor. The sensor calibration target may also include one or more apertures in the substrate for calibrating a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensor.

  • Patent number: 11295277
Abstract: Diagnosing vehicle anomalies efficiently is dependent upon the expertise of the repair technician, but also the availability of resources. As vehicles have become increasingly computerized, repair technicians have become increasingly specialized in a smaller number of vehicle models. Dealerships and large repair shops have an advantage in that they can more easily afford to obtain specialized electronic tools. However, repair technicians in smaller repair shops often are more skilled, but are unable to afford access to advanced electronic tools and software. A system for using remotely located resources to improve the diagnosis and resolution of vehicle anomalies, including the use of expert technicians and vehicle-specific databases, is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 11287266
Abstract: An apparatus is onboard a vehicle and in communication with sensors onboard the vehicle. The apparatus receives a maplet request identifying a request region; and, responsive to determining that the vehicle is within the request region, processes sensor data captured by sensors to generate a multi-sensor data stream corresponding to a road network segment. The apparatus identifies an observation corresponding to a pole-like object within the multi-sensor data stream; and generates a maplet based on the observation and the maplet request. Generating the maplet comprises using a predetermined data model and a predetermined data format corresponding to a pole-like object observation class to encode road data corresponding to the observation corresponding to the pole-like object. The apparatus provides the maplet such that a network apparatus receives the maplet. The network apparatus is configured to validate/update map data of a digital map representing the road network based on the maplet.

  • Patent number: 11242098
Abstract: The technology relates to enhancing the operation of autonomous vehicles. Extendible sensors are deployed based on detected or predicted conditions around a vehicle while operating in a self-driving mode. When not needed, the sensors are fully retracted into the vehicle to reduce drag and increase fuel economy. When the onboard system determines that there is a need for a deployable sensor, such as to enhance the field of view of the perception system, the sensor is extended in a predetermined manner. The deployment may depend on one or more operating conditions and/or particular driving scenarios. These and other sensors of the vehicle may be protected with a rugged housing, for instance to protect against damage from the elements. And in other situations, deployable foils may extend from the vehicle's chassis to increase drag and enhance braking. This may be helpful for large trucks in steep descent situations.
