Abstract: A digital television receiver includes smart antenna signaling that sends, to a smart antenna configuration, data specifying reception directions available to the smart antenna. The receiver includes an event monitor that detects a predetermined event, and a smart antenna configuration estimator that, in response to the detected event and for each of a current reception direction and available reception directions adjacent on either side of the current reception direction, to obtain an estimate and the maximum value of a channel impulse response from the receiver, to calculate an average value of the channel impulse response, including channel impulse response values for additional signal paths. The estimator calculates a respective quality value as the ratio of the maximum value to the average value of the channel impulse response. The receiver also includes a selector that selects a direction corresponding to the largest respective quality value as a new reception direction.

  • Patent number: 8374085
Abstract: A method (400) for managing a data stream (30) encoded according to a digital transmission protocol and configured for broadcasting to a consumer network device (14) within a broadband communications network (10). A message relating to the data stream is encapsulated (402) within a transport layer data packet (502). The packet has a destination port number field. A value associated with a predetermined parameter of the digital transmission protocol is created (404) within the field. Based on the value, the packet is forwarded (406) to the consumer network device according to a network layer protocol. When the forwarded message is received by the consumer network device, the consumer network device processes the data stream based on the message, and establishes an application layer communication socket based on the destination port number value. The socket is usable to receive further messages associated with the predetermined parameter of the digital transmission protocol.

Abstract: According to color measuring apparatus and method and a liquid crystal display system S of the present invention, intensity signals obtained by receiving radiant light from a liquid crystal color display 3 at a first viewing angle and corresponding to at least three mutually different spectral responsivities are converted into information on a plurality of primary color intensities of the liquid crystal color display 3, and the intensity signals by the first viewing angle are corrected to signal intensities by a second viewing angle. Thus, these color measuring apparatus and method are capable of a more accurate measurement even at a dark gradation. The liquid crystal display system can more accurately calibrate a display surface 3a of the liquid crystal color display 3 even at a dark gradation.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for reducing interference with digital television transmissions occurring over a bandwidth are disclosed. The digital television signal is correlated to a reference digital television field sync signal. A non-coherent correlation power measurement is determined based on the correlation of the received digital television signal to the reference digital television field sync signal. A plurality of maximum non-coherent correlation power measurements are determined over multiple field times. An energy estimate for the digital television transmission is determined based on the maximum non-coherent correlation power measurements. A transmit mask filter is generated based on the energy estimate. The transmit mask is applied to transmissions to reduce interference with detected digital television transmissions.

  • Patent number: 8368803
Abstract: In an example embodiment, a calibration module in a projector platform establishes an initial configuration of settable exposure attributes for a digital camera. The calibration module projects a preview image onto a surface and captures the projection of the preview image with the digital camera and receives input from a user identifying regions of interest in the capture of the preview image. Next the calibration module projects an exposure image onto the surface. The calibration module then computes a final configuration of exposure attributes for the digital camera by iteratively: (a) capturing the projection of the exposure image with the digital camera; (b) measuring descriptive statistics relating to the color channels of pixels in the regions of interest in the capture of the exposure image; (c) evaluating the descriptive statistics with an evaluation function determined by a calibration process; and (d) establishing a revised configuration of exposure attributes.

  • Patent number: 8363042
Abstract: An improved method for photon transfer curve (PTC) testing in an image sensor is described. A cost and time savings is achieved by reducing the number of frames necessary for measurements to two that are generated by illuminating a first plurality of pixel rows at a first intensity level m1, a second plurality of pixel rows at a second intensity level t2, and so forth up to an nth plurality of pixel rows illuminated at an nth intensity level mn where mn>m2>m1. The resulting image has “n” regions each with a different brightness. The highest intensity level essentially saturates the pixels in the nth region. In one example, a four row exposure and five intensity levels are employed in the illuminator sequence. An intelligent light source is pre-programmable with illumination intensity settings and is synchronized to the image sensor using HSYNC and VSYNC signals, for example.

  • Patent number: 8310595
Abstract: A method, and apparatus, and logic encoded in one or more computer-readable media to carry out a method. The method is to sample analog video at a sample clock rate and at a phase selected from a set of phases based on a quality measure determined from the sampled video. The quality measure is based on statistics of pixel to pixel differences in a coordinate of the generated digital video that have a magnitude exceeding a pre-determined threshold.

  • Patent number: 8305438
Abstract: This invention concerns the testing of surveillance camera installations. In particular, the invention involves an automatic testing system for surveillance camera installations, and a method for testing. The invention involves receiving test or “probe” images from at least one camera in the installations. Storing a reference image from at least the one camera. Comparison of the probe image with a reference image from the same camera, and production of an output when maintenance is required for that camera. The comparison involves the steps of: Extracting salient features from both the probe and reference images. Calculating matching factors between the salient features extracted from both images. And, computing a decision about whether maintenance is required from the matching factors.

Abstract: A video object detecting apparatus enables a user to not only simply watch the video but also to explore a video using a motion and a posture of the user. In addition, the user may manipulate the video using body motion instead of general input units such as a mouse and a touch system. Also, a video object deforming apparatus enables the user to recognize a difference in motions between an interactive video and the user, and provides the user with a video reflecting the difference.

  • Patent number: 8294772
Abstract: The invention relates to a system and method for monitoring connection performance within a network. In one embodiment, the invention is implemented by analyzing an array of status bits outputted by an analog to digital video decoder. By storing and statistically analyzing an array of status information units, the person monitoring the network can quickly and efficiently be notified of a connection problem, such as a degrading connection resulting in an intermittent signal. In another embodiment, the system and method are implemented by analyzing an array of time stamps outputted when processing frames of video from an analog video camera.

  • Patent number: 8289344
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for achieving color and luminance uniformity in color output devices. In one embodiment, measurements of luminance and chrominance are taken at various regions of the display surface for a range of color inputs. Using the collected data, a color volume is formed for each of the measured regions. This color volume comprises a set of all colors producible at the measured region. The color volumes for each of the measured regions are then used to generate a common color gamut, i.e., a volume of colors that are producible in each of the measured regions. A gamut mapping can then be performed for all or a portion of the positions on the display surface to a target color gamut. Input data for the gamut mapping process may be determined by conventional interpolative techniques.

  • Patent number: 8285223
Abstract: A deviation from an expected wireless link status between a wireless display device and a local wireless media transmission device is detected via the wireless display device. The local wireless media transmission device is located proximate to the wireless display device. It is determined that an expected wireless signal is not incident upon a first wireless receiver of the wireless display device based upon the detected deviation from the expected wireless link status. A problem is identified that causes the detected deviation from the expected wireless link status. A wireless status indicator is displayed via the display. The wireless status indicator indicates that the expected wireless signal is not incident upon the first wireless receiver and indicates the identified problem that causes the detected deviation from the expected wireless link status. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract.
