The transducer converts incident infrared (IR) radiation in birefringence changes that can be measured with visible light. In other words, the system uses the temperature sensitivity of the LC birefringence to convert the IR scene to a visible image. Measurements on sample arrays indicate that the LC material quality is similar to that of bulk samples and has good noise performance. Additionally, high-fill-factor arrays on fused-silica substrates may be processed to enable optimization of conditions for greatly improved temperature sensitivity. Abstract: In the step of curing a resin for bonding a TFT substrate and a counter substrate each having an alignment film that has been optically aligned by using UV-light, damage to the alignment film due to the UV-light can be prevented without using a light shielding mask. A UV-light absorption layer is formed between each black matrix on the counter substrate. The TFT and counter substrates are sealed at their periphery by a resin that is cured by UV-light radiated from the counter substrate side. Since the absorption layer has a high absorbability to UV-light at a wavelength of 300 nm or less that degrades the alignment film, damage to the alignment film due to the UV-light for curing the resin can be prevented. Thus, provision of a light shielding mask for shielding the UV-light for the display region can be saved.

A plinth higher than a pixel electrode is formed at a part where a columnar spacer formed over a counter substrate touches a TFT substrate. When an alignment film of a double-layered structure is applied over the pixel electrode and the plinth, the thickness of the alignment film over the plinth reduces by a leveling effect. • Patent number: 8681296
Abstract: The invention discloses a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel manufacturing method as well as an LCD panel and an LCD. The manufacturing method comprises the following steps: A: Treating a surface of an electrode of an LCD panel, the surface at least comprising a contact surface with an Au ball, to diminish the adhesion of an alignment liquid to the contact surface and prevent the alignment liquid from not coating the contact surface; and B: Coating or printing the alignment liquid. Because the electrode surface to which an Au ball particle will be applied (namely the transfer pad) is treated before the application to diminish the adhesion of the alignment liquid to this surface, and no alignment layer will be formed on the surface of the transfer pad. Therefore, the alignment layer can be very wide, the uniformity of the alignment layer at the edge is good, the accuracy is high, the display effect on the edge of the LCD panel is improved, and the frame of the LCD panel is narrowed.

Abstract: A process for protecting the external face of an electro-optical device, the external face comprising at least one optical film adhesively bonded to a transparent substrate and set back therefrom, comprises encapsulating the optical element between the substrate and a transparent cover that is substantially the same size as the substrate. The process comprises adhesive bonding of the cover, the adhesive bonding being achieved by depositing uncured adhesive in two steps, namely a first step that is used first to take up the step difference between the substrate and the optical element, and a second step that is used to adhesively bond the protective cover. Smaller respective thicknesses of adhesive shrink in each step and thus, in the end, the total shrinkage is limited and the quality of the product is improved.

Abstract: This invention enables forming a photo-alignment film having a large LC anchoring strength in an IPS type liquid crystal display device. An alignment film is adapted to have a two-layer structure including a photo-alignment film and an alignment film with enhanced film strength. The photo-alignment film is formed of a precursor of polyamide acid ester, 80 percent or more of which is polyamide acid ester including cyclobutane. The alignment film with enhanced film strength is formed of a precursor of polyamide acid. After irradiating the substrate with ultraviolet light for photo-alignment, the substrate is heated. Thus, it is possible to achieve a high LC anchoring strength of the alignment film as the whole for photo-alignment, without degrading the mechanical strength of the alignment film with enhanced film strength.
