  • Publication number: 20130100393
Abstract: Between a pair of mother substrates, spaces are defined by a seal. The pair of mother substrates is cut to cut out cells. The seal is arranged to fill a region between adjacent spaces. On the seal, a low moisture-permeable layer made of a material that is harder and has lower moisture permeability than the seal is laminated in the region between the adjacent spaces. On at least one of the pair of mother substrates, a pair of projecting stripe portions extending along a length of the seal and arranged at an interval is formed in the region between the adjacent spaces at a position overlapping with the seal and the low moisture-permeable layer. In a step of cutting the pair of mother substrates, together with the pair of mother substrates, the seal and the low moisture-permeable layer are cut between the pair of projecting stripe portions.

Abstract: In an IPS type liquid crystal display device, a light shielding film, a red color filter, an overcoat film, and an alignment film are formed in this order on a counter substrate. However, the alignment film is not formed in a seal portion. When the alignment film is subjected to photo-alignment with ultraviolet radiation, a portion of the overcoat film not covered with the alignment film is degraded by ultraviolet radiation. In order to prevent moisture penetrating from the degraded overcoat film from reaching the light shielding film to thereby alter the light shielding film and from causing the peeling of the light shielding film, the red color filter is disposed below the overcoat film to block the moisture.

Because the application connections are just at the corner, the extra sealant can be directly cut off during cutting; in addition, the contamination by material extrusion after pressing caused by overly thick sealant coating at the connections can be avoided; and the man-hour of multiple cuttings can be reduced. Because the sealant overlap section is at the corner of the display area and will not diverge from the display area, the difficulty in controlling the width of the lines is solved.

Abstract: Forming a seal between plates (e.g., glass plates within an LCD or electrodes within an OLED display) using a non-uniform pattern of adhesive applied between the plates is disclosed. The pattern of adhesive can include more adhesive material in portions of the plate that are expected to experience higher levels of stress. The pattern of adhesive can be determined based at least in part on the width of the surface of the plates that contact each other, where wider and narrower portions of the surface can have different adhesive patterns. The amount of adhesive applied to the plates can be varied by adjusting the speed at which a dispensing nozzle traverses the contact surface of the plate, the flow rate at which adhesive is dispensed from the nozzle, or both.
