Abstract: A liquid crystal display element includes two substrates, divided into a display region and a non-display region, between which liquid crystals are sandwiched, and first columnar spacers, disposed between the two substrates in the display region, which make contact with the two substrates. The liquid crystal display element also includes second columnar spacers, disposed between the two substrates in the non-display region, which make contact with the two substrate by a contact area that is smaller than a contact area by which the first columnar spacers make contact with the two substrates. Therefore, generation of vacuum bubbles in the display region due to a temperature drop or a substrate deformation causes the substrates in the non-display region to be concaved, so that the liquid crystals move from the concaved portion of the non-display region to a portion of the display region which contains the vacuum bubbles.

Abstract: After the attachment process, a substrate etching process, in which the outer surfaces of the upper and lower substrates are etched to reduce the thickness of the substrates, is performed according to the desired lightening of the substrate. However, since a main seal pattern can be damaged during the substrate etching process, a method of preventing the damage, in which a sub-seal pattern is formed, is suggested. However, if a plurality of unit liquid crystal cells is formed on one substrate, deterioration resulting from a low margin for the sub-seal patterns can occur so that a yield is decreased. In an embodiment according to the present invention, damage of the main seal pattern from the etching solution during the substrate etching process is prevented by the formation of the sub-seal patterns in the exterior of the main seal pattern, and air of the cell interior are easily vented due to the air vent portion having a proper seal pattern for ventilation.

Abstract: The invention includes a liquid crystal display panel including spacers and a method of making this panel. The spacers, which are positioned in the liquid crystal-filled gap between a first substrate and a second substrate, provide support to the substrates and prevent the substrate from bending when the device is used as a touch screen panel. By preventing the bending of the device, the spacers help prevent the undesirable ripple effect suffered by liquid crystal devices. In order to minimize the amount of light blocked by the spacers, the spacers are formed in a region where light is substantially intercepted anyway, such as in a contact hole. A black matrix layer is formed on the spacers. The spacers may be distributed unevenly between the substrates, depending on how much force each of the spacers will have to absorb in each area of the panel.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a pair of insulating substrates bonded to each other via a sealing material, and liquid crystal filled between a pair of the insulating substrates. A cell gap is formed so as to gradually increase from the center to an end of a display area at room temperature. According to this arrangement, it is possible to smooth out a difference in thermal expansion between the liquid crystal and the sealing material when an atmospheric temperature rises, and it is possible to prevent a cell gap from being too large in the center of the display area. Consequently, an irregular display color can be eliminated.
