Shortage of the liquid crystal supplied into the LCD panel and overflow of the liquid crystal can be avoided. Accordingly, the steps for supplying the liquid crystal into the LCD panel may be reduced, and simultaneously peripheral regions of the LCD panel be prevented from being contaminated by the liquid crystal while the liquid crystal is filled into the LCD panel.

Abstract: A method for using absorbing means for optically coupling substrates together to significantly decrease or eliminate water or like liquid buildup or condensation between the coupled substrates. Two clean substrates are initially provided. A means for absorbing, such a polyvinyl alcohol film, is applied to a first substrate surface. The substrates are then bonded together so that the first substrate surface is in facing relation to the second substrate, and then positioned parallel to each other and in close proximity to each other. A clear means for optically coupling is then de-gassed to remove any gas within the means for optically coupling. Then, a pressurized means for injecting is filled with the means for optically coupling. The means for injecting then introduces the means for optically coupling within the two substrates from a peripheral edge, thereby allowing the means for optically coupling to permeate throughout the volume between the two substrates.

Abstract: A metallized pattern, used as an electrical conductor, is altered by means of standard lithographic processes to have regions of interspersed missing metal, or voids, in a specified region of the pattern. The voids in the conducting pattern allow radiation, emanating from various angles, to penetrate through the voids so that a glue seal, disposed underneath the pattern, can be exposed to the radiation and thus activated and cured. The preferred application is found in flat panel displays where radiation is required to cure a glue seal that affixes two substrates to one another. The openings in the metallized pattern in the region of the glue seal minimize the shadowing, caused by the solid portions of the pattern, which can result in the lack of glue seal curing or polymerization. The absence of shadowing assures that the glue seal is fully cured and will not contaminate the liquid crystal after final processing.

Abstract: When a photopolymerization compound (molecular weight: not less than 300) having at least two ultraviolet light sensitive portions in its molecular structure is mixed with ferroelectric liquid crystal and an exposure to ultraviolet light is performed, a continuous structure is formed over almost whole length between two glass substrates, and a continuous twisted structure is formed between the glass substrates in the state of liquid crystal molecular orientation. Before the exposure to ultraviolet light, the photopolymerization compound does not exhibit satisfactory compatibility with the ferroelectric liquid crystal to be mixed, but exhibits phase separation in the mixed state. The ferroelectric liquid crystal has a bookshelf layer structure.

  • Patent number: 6380999
Abstract: Electronic displays are physically reshaped and/or resized to meet custom specifications for special applications such as avionics, where Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) are not typically used. Customization includes cutting the physical display to specified dimensions to fit into a target opening, and resealing the display to preserve proper cell spacing and assure basic functionality. The target opening is typically a control panel or dashboard opening, such as in the cockpit of an airplane. The sealing process may include improving the original seal, and/or providing additional seals. Additional seals may protect sensitive areas against chemical corrosives or contamination, humidity, electrostatic damage, etc., and/or prevent light from passing around the edge of the display image area. Electric continuity may need to be reestablished for electric leads affected during the customization process, and electronic drivers may need to be reattached to the display.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display and its fabrication method. The liquid crystal display includes a first substrate with a groove around a TFT array, a second substrate having a ridge that fits into the groove, a liquid crystal layer over display area, and a seal between the first substrate and the second substrate. The seal bonds the first and second substrates together, and the ridge maintains the liquid crystal over the TFT array. When fabricating the display, the liquid crystal is located within the ridge, the seal is beneficially outside the ridge, and the ridge fits into the groove.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved seal for sealing a liquid crystal display (LCD) device. An improved seal is formed between a transparent plate and a die having a pixel array. The improved seal is configured to encircle the pixel array of the die when the die and the transparent plate are joined. The die and the transparent plate are joined together such that the improved seal is disposed between the transparent plate and the die. In one embodiment, the improved seal is a hybrid seal. The hybrid seal includes a first seal encircling the pixel array of the die and adhesively coupling the transparent plate and the die. The hybrid seal further includes a second seal encircling the second seal. In another embodiment, the first seal lacks a characteristic necessary for an effective seal. The second seal possesses the characteristic, such that the hybrid seal possesses the necessary characteristic.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display having a seal pattern which can readily be formed without using the screen printing method nor dispense method is proposed. In such a liquid crystal display, an opposite substrate and a TFT substrate respectively have on the periphery along the edge thereof seal patterns. The seal patterns are preliminarily formed in the semiconductor processes for fabricating pixel patterns on the opposite substrate and the TFT substrate using of course the same apparatuses used for proceeding such semiconductor processes. The individual seal patterns are corrugated on the surface thereof so as to be engaged with each other. Thus the surface portions of the individual seal patterns are adhered under fusion by stacking both substrates and by heating the seal patterns to a predetermined temperature while being applied with a predetermined pressure, to thereby join both seal patterns in an adhered manner.

An excess deformation of the panel to make the cell gap smaller than the appropriate cell gap d0 after the liquid crystal display panel is put under atmospheric pressure is prevented by compressive stress of the display area spacers 6.
