Abstract: An optical filter comprising a variable transmittance layer having a first spectrum in a dark state, and a second spectrum in a faded state; and a color balancing layer having a third spectrum; each of the first, second and third spectra comprising a visible portion; the first and third spectra combining to provide a dark state spectrum approximating a dark state target color, and the second and third spectra combining to provide a faded state spectrum approximating a faded state target color. The optical filter may further comprise a light attenuating layer. The optical filter may further comprise part of a laminated glass.

Abstract: An ophthalmic lens incorporating clearly identifiable, highly visible embedded labels that are not visible to the wearer or others when placed on the eye may be utilized to allow an individual to easily distinguish between the normal state of the lens and the inverted state of the lens as well as serve any number of functions, including acting as a brand label, a prescription label or as a cosmetic enhancer. The embedded label comprises holographic recordings revealed only in transmitted light.

Abstract: An ophthalmic lens incorporating a usage compliance indicator may be utilized to indicate when the lens should be discarded or otherwise treated. The usage compliance indicator comprises a material that is clear when the lens is removed from its packaging and transforms to a visible marking over a given period of time corresponding to the manufacturer's suggested usable time. The material is compatible with the lens material and does not interfere with the optics.

Abstract: An ophthalmic lens incorporating clearly identifiable, highly visible inversion marking(s) that become invisible when placed on the eye may be utilized to allow an individual to easily distinguish between the normal state of the lens and the inverted state of the lens. The ophthalmic lens comprises a thin material layer capable of changing its optical state from diffusive light scattering, colored, or both, to invisible transparent at the corneal temperature of a normal person, at the influence of ambient light, or a combination thereof.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods, materials and systems for producing contact lenses and contact lenses produced using said methods, materials and systems. According to some embodiments, a contact lens produced by said methods, materials and systems includes an extra-ocular indicator (“EOI”) adapted to alter in color upon removal of said lens from an eye. The EOI may be at least partially composed of a pigment adapted to become relatively more visible when the contact lens is outside an eye than when the contact lens is placed in an eye.
