  • Patent number: 6769799
Abstract: A light pipe may be used to illuminate an elongated area. Light may emanate laterally relative to the axis of the light pipe, and the light intensity is substantially uniform along the length of the light pipe. The light pipe may include a translucent member and a opaque reflective member that is separated from the translucent member by an air gap. A band of reflective material may be located on an exterior surface of the translucent member. The entire light pipe may be formed by co-extrusion of the translucent member, the band of reflective material and the opaque section through a single co-extrusion die. Light emitted laterally from the translucent member toward the arcuate opaque reflective member and band of reflective material may be reflected laterally through the translucent member transverse to the axis of the light pipe, so that all light extends through the front surface of the translucent member.

  • Patent number: 6767114
Abstract: An improved outdoor lighting shield is provided for more efficiently illuminating large areas, such as roadways and parking lots. The shield is comprised of a standard lighting base and bulb, a translucent diffusing cylinder wrapped around the bulb, a reflective strip mounted around the diffusing cylinder, a highly-reflective truncated cone, and a non-reflective inverted cone mounted on top of the truncated cone. The diffusing cylinder softens light to reduce glare in the areas closest to the streetlight. The reflective strip reflects excess light onto the truncated cone, which casts a powerful ring of undiffused light to areas further from the streetlight. Any light that would normally be thrown into the atmosphere, causing light pollution, is caught by the inverted cone, which casts diffused light directly below the streetlight.

The light guide includes a scattering mark, a reflection surface having a curved surface, and a light exit surface. The shape of the reflection surface is determined so that the light scattered at the scattering mark is focused directly onto a predetermined position outside the transparent member. The shape of the curved surface of the reflection surface is such that the light scattered at the scattering mark should illuminate the predetermined position, where majority of contribution to the illumination is attributed to the reflected light.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a multi-angle reflector for use in a backlight unit. The back light unit comprises a plurality of lamps, a multi-angle reflector and a diffuser. The multi-angle reflector comprises a plate and a plurality of reflecting protrusions. The plate has a top surface toward to the lamps. The reflecting protrusions are respectively disposed on the top surface of the plate. Each reflecting protrusion has a reflecting surface. The reflecting surfaces have a plurality of reflecting angles corresponding to the top surface of the plate so that the light from lamps are adapted to reflect to the diffuser according to the reflecting angles. Therefore, according to the invention, the reflecting angles of the reflecting surfaces on the reflecting protrusions can be adjusted so as to suit to various actual conditions. The lights are uniform and the utility of the lights is improved. Because the reflecting protrusions are small, the reflector can be made into a thin type.

Abstract: This lighting system improves the illumination of enclosed spaces by reducing undesirable shadows. Elongated curved reflective surfaces at the upper periphery of the illuminated space reflect light from a central source to the activity area. Light arriving at the activity area from many directions softens or eliminates shadows. Appropriate lighting contrast may be selected at installation and maintained by simple adjustments in response to changes in layout, furnishings, and activities conducted in the illuminated area. Contrast may be controlled as needed by varying the ratio of light reflected from the periphery to that proceeding directly from the central source to the activity area. A smaller number of efficient, powerful light sources lowers power consumption, reduces fixture installation and wiring costs, and diminishes maintenance labor compared to conventional lighting systems.

  • Patent number: 6558010
Abstract: An attaching part of a reflecting mirror is fixed to a guardrail of a road. A solar cell device of a solar-powered light emitter accumulates electricity produce by sunlight of the daytime, and a light emitting diode emits light at nighttime. When a front panel is irradiated with light from a headlight of an automobile running at nighttime, the light is reflected off a diamond cut of a rear surface, in particular, then the light is reflected off the surface of an inner panel on which reflecting surface work is made, and the reflected light is irregularly reflected by the diamond cut surface, thereby functioning as a driving sign in combination with the emitted light from the light emitting diode. Dirt adhered to the front surface of the front panel peels off because of a self purification effect of titanium oxide on the front surface.

Abstract: A highly efficient luminaire. The luminaire includes a light source that emits light. The emitted light is redirected by a light transformer having a curved circular reflective interior surface, the reflective interior surface reflecting the light in a predetermined pattern. A substantial amount of light being may be reflected close to an axis coincident with a radial line defining a radius of the circular reflective interior surface. Additionally, a substantial amount of light may be reflected in a pattern with low divergency or parallel with an axis of the light transformer. The light is transmitted to the exterior of the luminaire by an optical window.

  • Patent number: 6508566
Abstract: An under cabinet halogen light fixture with an internal wire raceway includes a housing having a base and a removable cover, which when mated, define a hollow interior. The light fixture also includes at least one lamp assembly mounted inside the housing. Adjacent each lamp assembly there is a corresponding bezel assembly mounted in a respective aperture formed in the cover. A wall member located in the base defines at least one internal wire raceway in the interior of the housing, which routes electrical wires to each lamp assembly from an external wire raceway, or from a hole in the base of the housing where the electrical wires enter the housing. If needed, the hole in the base of the housing is created by removing a punch out portion from the base. To mate the internal wire raceway with an external wire raceway, a breakaway portion formed in the housing adjacent the internal wire raceway is removed from the housing to create a passageway that is shaped to receive the external wire raceway.

Abstract: A portable lamp for providing mixed direct and diffused light. The lamp is especially suited for providing pleasant lighting conditions at a table or workbench. A hollow cover is mounted upon a base. A light bulb inside the cover provides light, the bulb being powered by a self contained power source such as a battery. The cover, which may be spherical, has a translucent upper portion for transmitting diffused light, a medial transparent portion for transmitting undiffused light directly to the tabletop, and an opaque lower portion. A conical shaped reflector within the cover serves to reflect light emitted by the bulb to the translucent and transparent portions of the cover. Colored translucent disks may be removably attached inside the cover to add color to the diffused light.
