Of A Switching System Patents (Class 370/244)
  • Patent number: 8743706
Abstract: In a transmission circuit used in a TDD scheme, a preset current is supplied from a current source to a detection diode via a switch that is made conductive during a reception period and made non-conductive during a transmission period. A determination is made if the output of the detection diode is within a predetermined specified range and, if the output is out of the specified range, a judgment is made that the detection diode is faulty.

  • Patent number: 8737203
Abstract: Recovery time upon the failure of a link or switching system in an asynchronous data network can be minimized if downstream data switches provide upstream messages indicating to upstream switching system that the downstream traffic arrived in tact and was properly handled. Upon this loss or failure of the upstream status message to an upstream switching system, an upstream switching system can reroute data traffic around a failed link or failed switch with a minimal amount of lost data. The upstream status message is conveyed from a downstream switching system to an upstream switching system via a reverse notification tree data pathway. The reverse notification pathway is established by using a messaging protocol between network switches by which the working and protection paths, among other things, are established.

Abstract: In a packet switch with databases (250, 404) used for packet forwarding, the database pieces are identified by version identifiers (410V) which are used by the packet switch's modules (LCx, RPM0, RPM1) in exchanging information on the databases and requesting updates to the databases. For example, if a primary management module fails and the management is transferred to a secondary management module, the secondary management module requests forwarding modules (e.g. line cards) to identify the database pieces stored on the forwarding modules, and to update the databases as needed. Use of version identifiers reduces the amount of data that has to be transferred in connection with such requests.

Abstract: The present invention is directed towards a method for using a listening policy for a virtual server on an intermediary device. An intermediary device establishes for a first virtual server a first listening policy with an expression for evaluating packets received by the intermediary device to determine whether the packet may access the first virtual server. The intermediary device listens for packets at a first internet protocol (IP) address and a first port specified for the first virtual server. Then, the intermediary device evaluates the expression of the first listening policy to a first packet received at the first IP address and first port and determines whether to provide the first packet to the first virtual server based on a result of the evaluation.

Abstract: Specially configured host bus adaptors (HBAs) are located in the switches in the fabric or added to a management server. The HBAs are programmed to perform higher level protocol analysis, such as monitoring exchanges, LUNs, and VM/LUN/LBA ranges and developing SCSI statistics on the flows. The HBA can detect protocol exceptions. When located in the switches, mirroring of the desired frames is simplified as all routing is handled internally to the switch, with the HBA/switch combination providing data over the management Ethernet port to a management server. To maintain performance, preferably only the protocol relevant frames are mirrored to the HBAs. With the data provided from the HBAs, in conjunction with the normal diagnostic and statistics data available from the switch itself, the management server can correlate events end-to-end, correlate I/O error statistics collected from the fabric with server statistics, and correlate performance statistics collected from the fabric with server statistics.

  • Patent number: 8619594
Abstract: The system and method get a packet trace for a failed communication and a packet trace for a successful communication. The two packet traces are generated with packets from a common protocol(s) shared by the two communications. The failed and successful communications have at least some network elements in common. A field(s) in the common protocol(s) is identified. The field(s) is updated to be the same in both packet traces. The two packet traces are then compared to produce a list of remaining differences that can be used to diagnose problems in the failed communication. The list can also be compared to bills of materials for the failed and successful communications to further enhance diagnosis of the failed communication.

  • Patent number: 8619599
Abstract: Methods and systems for implementing self-testing of packet processing devices are disclosed. For example, a packet-processing device can include a plurality of ports having a receive media access controller (RX MAC) and a transmit media access controller (TX MAC). The TX MAC of a first port is selectably configurable to loop back packets to its respective RX MAC during the self-testing. The packet-processing device can further include a switching engine configured to provide a test packet received from a packet generator to the TX MAC of the first port, and route to the TX MAC of one or more second ports at least the test packet received from the RX MAC of the first port, or a copy of the received test packet, after the received test packet or its copy has been looped-back one or more times between the TX MAC and the RX MAC of the first port.

Abstract: An apparatus comprising a node configured to transmit operation, administration, and maintenance (OAM) connectivity frames, wherein the node adds an impairment notification indication to some, but not all of OAM connectivity frames transmitted by the node, wherein the impairment notification indication indicates the node's desire to receive notification of an impairment condition along the path. A network component comprising a receiver unit configured to receive multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) Ping frames, a circuit logic configured to add a downstream link impairment indication to responses to the MPLS Ping frames, wherein the downstream link impairment indication comprises a type and a severity level for a path impairment condition, and a transmitter unit configured to transmit the responses to the transmitted MPLS Ping frames.

  • Patent number: 8619555
Abstract: Method and system for handling error events on a current path for processing an I/O request for reading information from and writing information to a storage space is provided. A system is able to communicate with the storage space via more than one path. If the current path reports an error event, then an alternate path quality is determined to ascertain whether the alternate path will generate an error similar to the current path. The alternate path quality is determined based on a plurality of factors which are assigned certain weights. The weights are determined based on a likely contribution of each factor to a repetition of the error reported by the current path. If the alternate path quality is equal to or exceeds a programmable threshold value, then the alternate path is selected.

Abstract: The present invention enables a method for following the state of a call and generating defects as function of call completion success as opposed to discrete events that happen at individual network elements during the call. In one embodiment, the invention uses Call Detail Records (CDR) to analyze the end-to-end completion status to measure per call basis defects instead of using defect codes generated by network elements on a per equipment basis. CDR is data associated with a telephone call, including the calling and the called numbers, the date and timestamp, the duration, the call setup delay, and the final handling code of the telephone call.

Abstract: There are disclosed methods and apparatus for testing a network. One or more source port units may transmit packets, each packet including a packet group identifier (PGID) that identifies one or more of a plurality of destination port units as expected destinations of the packet. The plurality of destination port units may receive the packets from the network. Each destination port unit may extract the PGID from each received packet, accumulate receive statistics for at least a range of PGID values, and store accumulate receive statistics in a receive statistics memory. Misdirected packet statistics may be reported by retrieving, from the receive statistics memory of at least one destination port unit, receive statistics for at least some PGIDs for which the respective destination port unit is not an expected destination, and aggregating the retrieved receive statistics to generate the misdirected packet statistics.

Abstract: Conventional network tomography techniques do not allow the location or cause of a failure to be specified, and false positives are common due to lack of information. Using aggregation flow mining (AFM) or a similar method, an IMF (102) acquires, from each router (105) to be tested, information in relation to each flow. The IMF, in relation to each of the routers, obtains distributions of statistical information such as throughput or difference for each flow; calculates, in relation to each of the distributions, a Mahalanobis distance in relation to the expected value of a reference distribution; and makes a comprehensive assessment of the distributions to perform a fault determination. When the fault determination is performed, a normal value of the distribution used for comparison is acquired from AFM and updated through feedback as needed.
