  • Patent number: 7992208
Abstract: An estimate of a portion of network traffic that is nonconforming to a communication transmission control protocol is used to signal that a distributed denial of service attack may be occurring. Traffic flows are aggregated and packets are intentionally dropped from the flow aggregate in accordance with an assigned perturbation signature. The flow aggregates are observed to determine if the rate of arrival of packets that have a one-to-one transmission correspondence with the dropped packets are similarly responsive to the perturbation signature. By assigning orthogonal perturbation signatures to different routers, multiple routers may perform the test on the aggregate and the results of the test will be correctly ascertained at each router. Nonconforming aggregates may be redefined to finer granularity to determine the node on the network that is under attack, which may then take mitigating action.

  • Patent number: 7990925
Abstract: Seamless communication handoff is achieved by establishing a protocol tunnel to route leftover packets between network access nodes during the handoff. For example, in a mobile IP-based system, a mobile node may perform a handoff from a first access node that is associated with a first routing node to a second access node that is associated with a second routing node. To prevent the loss of any packets that may be in route for delivery to or from the first routing node during the handoff, the mobile node establishes a protocol tunnel with the first access node via the second access node. On the forward-link, packets being delivered from the first routing node are routed over the protocol tunnel to the second access node and then to the mobile node. On the reverse-link, packets being sent to the first routing node are routed over the protocol tunnel from the mobile node to the second access node and then to the first routing node.

Abstract: A method, mobile device, network device, system, and software are devised for soft value scaling with a single antenna interference cancellation (SAIC) receiver, or with an interference rejection combining (IRC) receiver, in an unsynchronized network. A signal is received having interference that is caused by a non-synchronized network. A desired power level of that signal is calculated. Then the desired power is compared to a total power of the signal, in order to identify a portion of a received burst having substantial interference. Then that portion of the received burst is weighted, to reduce its importance during decoding.

  • Patent number: 7881412
Abstract: Techniques for performing interference cancellation in a wireless (e.g., CDMA) communication system are described. For a single-sector interference canceller, received samples are processed (e.g., despread) to isolate a signal from a transmitter (e.g., a base station) and obtain input samples. The input samples are transformed based on a first transform (e.g., a fast Hadamard transform) to obtain received symbols for multiple orthogonal channels (e.g., Walsh bins). The received symbols for the multiple orthogonal channels are scaled with multiple gains to obtain scaled symbols. The gains may be related to the inverses of the power estimates for the orthogonal channels. The scaled symbols are transformed based on a second transform (e.g., an inverse fast Hadamard transform) to obtain output samples, which are processed (e.g., spread) to obtain interference-canceled samples having the signal from the transmitter suppressed.

  • Patent number: 7881261
Abstract: An exemplary method and apparatus provide improved dormant handoff of mobile stations having multiple packet data service instances. Each time a dormant IS-2000 mobile station undergoes a packet data mobility event it sends a dormant handoff request to the supporting network for each packet data service instance associated with it. If the mobile station does not have a traffic channel already assigned to it, each dormant handoff request are sent over common access channels. By recognizing that a given mobile station is re-registering multiple service instances for the same mobility event, the network can avoid excess common channel signaling by assigning a traffic channel to the mobile station responsive to receiving the dormant handoff request for its first service instance. Such an assignment causes the mobile station to send dormant handoff requests for any remaining service instances over the assigned traffic channel rather than over the common access channel.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining whether a received signal is transmitted via a repeater is described. A source signal to be conveyed via a particular repeater may include, or be modified to include, a variety of signal characteristics having a predictable relationship that remains relatively constant, which may be taken together as a signature of the repeater. The signature may reflect a composite of distinct signals. A database of repeater signature references may be developed, and an adequate match between characteristics of an unknown received signal and such signature references indicates that at least part of the unknown signal is transmitted via a repeater. Useful signal characteristics for repeater signatures may include some representative of signal strength, and time of arrival information, among many other possibilities.

Abstract: In order to prevent an incorrect synchronization between a received code-modulated signal and an available replica code, partial correlations are performed between a respective subset of samples of the replica code and samples of the received code-modulated signal associated to the respective subset of samples of the replica code at a specific alignment between the received code-modulated signal and the replica code. The results of the partial correlations are then compared to each other, and it may be decided based on this comparison whether the replica code corresponds to a code employed for code-modulating the received code-modulated signal.
