  • Patent number: 8358711
Abstract: To reduce the crest factor of a total signal, the signal dynamic range is corrected in baseband upstream of the interpolation filters. To this end, provision is made for the input of a correction device to be coupled to at least two signal sources which are designed to provide digital signals on different frequency bands. The correction device is designed to determine correction factors from the digital signals applied to the input and use them to alter the respective digital signals. The output of the correction device is coupled to a first and at least one second interpolation filter. This allows reduction of the signal dynamic range in baseband, which reduces the crest factor without having to accept substantial losses in signal quality.

  • Patent number: 8340072
Abstract: The present invention provides a preamble that is inserted into an OFDMA frame and has a common sequence for all the base stations participating in a transmission. The subscriber station performs fine synchronization using the common sequence on the common preamble, and the resulting peaks will provide the locations of candidate base stations. The base station specific search is then performed in the vicinities of those peaks by using base station specific pseudo-noise sequences. With this two stage cell search, the searching window is drastically reduced. The preamble is matched to known values by a respective receiver to decode the signals and permit multiple signals to be transferred from the transmitter to the receiver. The preamble may comprise two parts, Preamble-I and Preamble-2, which may be used in different systems, including multioutput, multi-input (MIMO) systems.

Abstract: A method, computer program product, and system are provided for computing link supportability in a WCDMA communications system. For example, the method can be used to calculate link supportability of a transponder in satellite communications system (e.g. MUOS) in a user-to-base direction. This method can include expressing a carrier signal to noise ratio spectral density for a communication link of interest in terms of a transponder input power of the communication link of interest, a spectral overlap factor representative of one or more interfering communication links, and a transponder input power of the one or more interfering communication links. Assumptions and approximations can be made to simplify the spectral density expression in order to reduce a dimensionality of terms used in the computation of the expression. As such, in reducing dimensionality, the expression becomes a manageable computation for WCDMA communication systems to evaluate.

Abstract: Techniques for performing power control and handoff are described. In an aspect, power control (PC) is supported with multiple PC modes such as an up-down PC mode and an erasure-based PC mode. One PC mode may be selected for use. Signaling may be sent to indicate the selected PC mode. If the up-down PC mode is selected, then a base station estimates the received signal quality for a terminal and sends PC commands to direct the terminal to adjust its transmit power. If the erasure-based PC mode is selected, then the base station sends erasure indications that indicate whether codewords received from the terminal are erased or non-erased. For both PC modes, the terminal adjusts its transmit power based on the power control feedback (e.g., PC commands and/or erasure indications) to achieve a target level of performance (e.g., a target erasure rate for the codewords). The erasure indications may also be used for handoff.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for power allocation in a mobile communication system are provided. A transmitting method includes allocating a certain fraction of total power to a common control channel; allocating available power corresponding to the remaining fraction of the total power to remaining control channels except for the common control channel among control channels transmitted in a current time slot by considering the remaining control channels; calculating a gain value of each control channel according to power allocated to each control channel; and regulating a gain of each control channel, which is to be transmitted to one or more Access Terminals (ATs), according to the calculated gain value. Therefore, reception throughput of each control channel can be improved.

Abstract: Provided is a mobile communication system which includes a plurality of RAT (Radio Access Technology) and can eliminate the need of a control channel for reporting RAT information so as to prevent congestion or shortage of the control channel capacity. In the mobile communication system, an LTE relay station (30) has a cover area (31) identical to a cover area (21) owned by a WLAN host station (20) and relays/transmits the signal received from an LTE base station (10) to a mobile station (40) in the cover area (31). The LTE relay station (30) adds to the signal received from the LTE base station (10), one of the offsets: a frequency offset, a time offset, and a power offset as information indicating that the mobile station (40) which receives a relay signal from the local station is located in the cover area (21) of WLAN and transmits the signal after offset addition to the mobile station (40) located in the cover area (31) (i.e., the cover area (21)).

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for feeder link configurations to layered modulation. One feeder link system employs feeder link spot beam to antennas in distinct coverage areas to enable frequency reuse. Another system employs narrow beam width feeder link antenna to illuminate individual satellites also enabling frequency reuse. Yet another system uses layered modulation in the feeder link. Another feeder link system employs a higher order synchronous modulation for the satellite feeder link than is used in the layered modulation downlink signals.

  • Patent number: 8249598
Abstract: A method is disclosed for disambiguating a reported pilot signal so as to facilitate handoff of a mobile station. When a radio access network (RAN) receives from a mobile station a handoff request carrying a parameter that ambiguously identifies at least two sectors as the potential handoff target, the RAN will send a test probe on at least one of the potential handoff target sectors and will determine, based on mobile station response to the test probe, which sector the mobile station received the test probe on and thus which sector was the intended handoff target. The RAN may then direct the mobile station to hand off to that sector if appropriate. Further, the RAN may add the identified sector into a neighbor list of a similarly situated other mobile station, to allow the other mobile station to more efficiently hand off to the same sector if appropriate.

Abstract: A plurality of antennas transmit a first spread spectrum signal having an associated code. The first spread spectrum signal is received at the wireless user. For each received first spread spectrum signal, a second spread spectrum signal is transmitted having an associated code having a same phase as that received first spread spectrum signal. The second spread spectrum signals are received at the plurality of antennas. A distance measurement is determined between each antenna and the wireless user based on in part a received timing of the second signals. The wireless user's location is determined based on in part the distance determinations.

Abstract: Methods and systems for fast synchronization and data reception for frequency hopping wireless communication systems are disclosed. Aspects of one method may include receiving a plurality of RF signals corresponding to a plurality of hopping frequencies. The RF signals may be processed in parallel to determine a hopping sequence. For example, the plurality of RF signals may be down-converted to a corresponding plurality of IF or baseband signals. The down-converted signals may be combined together to a single combined signal, and the single combined signal may then be processed to determine the frequency hopping sequence.

  • Patent number: 8243708
Abstract: Time division multiplexed input signals (i.e., separated into time slots) are spread in each time slot with a destination code. This spreading is applied for destination identification as opposed to signal information modulation. Each spreading signal is associated with a particular destination for a particular time slot. These spread signals are then combined on a code division bus. Output signals for retransmission to the destinations are recovered from the bus by application of despreading codes. Each despread signal has a destination code which appears in its individual time slot. In a variant code division multiplexed signals are directed to a destination by use of time slot interchanger to achieve time division switching to route the CDMA multiplexed channels.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and to devices for transmitting and receiving data in a code division multiple access telecommunication system. A random access time window (20) is provided, which comprises a plurality of random access slots for transmitting random access data, for example from a mobile station (24) to a base station (25). The plurality of random access slots in the random access time window (20) is divided into at least two groups, whereby the groups are allocated to respective priority classes, whereby the priority classes represent the transmission priorities of the random access data to be transmitted in the random access slots. The present invention allows a reduction in congestion on the random access slots for certain access types at the expense of other access types and a more efficient use of the random access time window.
