  • Patent number: 8843151
Abstract: Burst quality of service (QoS) mode uses a higher modulation rate and coding scheme for transmitting data blocks in a short period of time between a transmitting terminal and a user terminal experiencing a channel state above a certain threshold in a wireless communication system. Burst QoS may reduce data transmission time, thereby achieving a higher level of channel efficiency as well as a reduction in the consumption of power. In burst QoS mode, the channel state information (CSI) may be repeatedly measured. When the CSI is above a certain threshold, a higher rate modulation and coding (MC) scheme is used for burst data transmission. After the burst, a short sleep is triggered to reduce power consumption.

  • Patent number: 8824386
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for grouping the multiple stations connected to an access point (AP). The system and method comprise sending a sounding packet to a plurality of stations, wherein the stations may be all or part of the stations that are located within the range of the AP. The stations that receive the sounding packets respond to the AP, and the AP determines the channel state information (CSI) from the responses. According to the CSI, the AP divides the multiple stations into several groups. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a confirmation step is performed to each group of stations, respectively. The AP sends a second sounding packet to each group of stations, and verifies the CSI between each station group by group. Therefore, the method and system provides for monitoring the validation of each group by periodically sending sounding packets to each group.

Abstract: A data packet communication system employs radio link control (RLC) transmission between a transmitter and a receiver with an Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) arrangement whereby polling of the receiver is accomplished with reduced amount of redundantly transmitted data, such as between an access node and terminal. Upon a polling event, such as emptying of a transmission buffer of the transmitter, expiration of a polling timer, or reaching a radio link control (RLC) protocol data units (PDUs) count threshold, the transmitter sends a polling command to the receiver. This polling command is smaller than any of the RLC PDUs by resegmenting to a variably sized PDU sending a reduced amount of data. With evolving communication standards tending toward larger PDUs, such as in excess of a kilobyte for HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Access Evolution) and 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution), this inefficiency can be of increasing impact.

The station uses the first protocol before a first threshold and a second protocol after the first threshold. A first duration between the second threshold and the first threshold is at least of sufficient length for the station to receive one data packet from the access point and send an acknowledgment. The station transmits to the access point a current clear-to-send packet at a current time during a current exchange based on success or failure of a previous exchange during which a previous clear-to-send packet was transmitted to the access point at a previous time.

  • Patent number: 8630252
Abstract: A mobile station apparatus for transmitting feedback information in a wireless communication system and method thereof are disclosed. According to the present invention, feedback information is transmitted by a mobile station in a wireless communication system. The present invention includes receiving an allocation of a specific frequency partition from a base station by a fractional frequency reuse (FFR), generating a prescribed type feedback information on the specific frequency partition by measuring a channel quality of the specific frequency partition, and transmitting the feedback information on the specific frequency partition to the base station. Preferably, the mobile station can transmit feedback information on a frequency partition unallocated by the base station based on the received feedback request information. Accordingly, feedback overhead can be decreased in feedback transmission.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for operating a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO)-capable subscriber node are disclosed. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a MIMO-capable physical layer transceiver and a Medium Access Control (MAC) layer block that measures a received transmission to determine channel conditions. Upon receiving a transmission wherein said channel conditions meet specified conditions, the MAC layer block transmits a message to an access point indicating that the apparatus wants to switch between a non-MIMO mode and a MIMO mode, and upon receiving an acknowledgement, the MAC layer block switches between the non-MIMO mode and the MIMO mode. An apparatus for operating an access node is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8619752
Abstract: A data packet communication system employs radio link control (RLC) transmission between a transmitter and a receiver with an Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) arrangement whereby polling of the receiver is accomplished with reduced amount of redundantly transmitted data, such as between an access node and terminal. Upon a polling event, such as emptying of a transmission buffer of the transmitter, expiration of a polling timer, or reaching a radio link control (RLC) protocol data units (PDUs) count threshold, the transmitter sends a polling command to the receiver. This polling command is smaller than any of the RLC PDUs, which are conventionally resent with a polling bit set to evoke a STATUS PDU from the receiver. With evolving communication standards tending toward larger PDUs, such as in excess of a kilobyte for HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Access Evolution) and 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution), this inefficiency can be of increasing impact.

  • Patent number: 8615020
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adaptively obtaining bandwidth requests in a broadband wireless communication system. The method and apparatus includes dynamically varying technique combinations enabling a plurality of users to efficiently request bandwidth from a shared base station. A user may “piggyback” a new bandwidth request upon, or set a “poll-me bit” within, presently allocated bandwidth. A base station may poll users, individually or in groups, by allocating unrequested bandwidth for new requests. Polling may respond to a “poll-me bit,” and/or it may be adaptively periodic at a rate based on communication status parameters, such as recent communication activity and connection QoS levels Group polling permits a possibility of collisions. Polling policies may be established for dynamically varying user groups, or may be determined for each user. Dynamic selection of appropriate polling techniques makes use of efficiency benefits associated with each technique.

Abstract: A location aware mobile device can include a baseband processor for communicating with one or more communication networks, such as a cellular network or WiFi network. In some implementations, the baseband processor can collect network information (e.g., transmitter IDs) over time. Upon request by a user or application, the network information can be translated to estimated position coordinates (e.g., latitude, longitude, altitude) of the location aware device for display on a map view or for other purposes. A user or application can query the location history database with a timestamp or other query to retrieve all or part of the location history for display in a map view.
