Abstract: Noise variance estimation and interference detection is described. In one example, a method of estimating noise variance is described in which the pilots within a received OFDM signal are divided into bands and then a noise variance estimate is calculated on a per-band basis by averaging the noise estimates for those pilots within the band. In some examples, the pilots are divided into bands in frequency and in other examples, the pilots are divided into bands in frequency and time, such that noise estimates from more than one OFDM symbol are used in calculating the per-band noise variance estimates. The noise variance estimate for a pilot is then set to the noise variance estimate for the band which contains the pilot. The noise variance estimate for a data sub-carrier can then be determined by interpolating between the values for the pilots.

  • Patent number: 8588696
Abstract: A method of mitigating interference in a mobile wireless communication device by adaptively adjusting transmit power levels of a wireless cellular transceiver. A receive signal quality for a wireless non-cellular transceiver that includes interference from signals transmitted by the wireless cellular transceiver is estimated. The wireless non-cellular and wireless cellular transceivers are co-located in the mobile wireless communication device, and both transceivers are active. An actual transmit power of the wireless cellular transceiver is adjusted based on the estimated receive signal quality to a level less than a requested transmit power. The estimation of the receive signal quality and the adjusting of the actual transmit power is periodically repeated. The estimation accounts for operational properties of the wireless cellular and non-cellular transceivers as well as operational characteristics of wireless connections through the transceivers.

Abstract: Described herein are techniques related to data communications using a data packet having at least one frame with a robust preamble for use over media having a high degree of non-stationary noise (e.g., impulsive noise). The described techniques employ a preamble with a structure having multiple transitions between the preamble sections. Each transition indicates the start of the upcoming frame. With the techniques described herein, if noise damages the transitions between such sections beyond recognition, the receiver can still determine the frame start time from the one or more of the undamaged transitions. Thus, the robustness of communications via the noisy media is significantly increased.

  • Patent number: 8532072
Abstract: A system and method of operating a wireless network having a plurality of nodes. Each node determines whether to replace the beacon node. When a node determines that the beacon node is to be replaced, the node determines whether it should nominate itself as a potential replacement beacon node. The decision whether to nominate itself as a potential replacement beacon node is a function of a nomination probability associated with the node. If the node determines that it should nominate itself as a potential replacement beacon node, the node sends out one or more beacon signals. Each node then adaptively modifies the probability of nominating itself as a function of the number of beacon signals received from other nodes. Beacon signals are received by potential replacement nodes and, if the potential replacement beacon node has received a beacon signal from a higher ranking potential replacement beacon node, the node removes itself as a candidate for the replacement beacon node.

Polling may respond to a “poll-me bit,” and/or it may be adaptively periodic at a rate based on communication status parameters, such as recent communication activity and connection QoS levels. Group polling permits a possibility of collisions. Polling policies may be established for dynamically varying user groups, or may be determined for each user. Dynamic selection of appropriate polling techniques makes use of efficiency benefits associated with each technique.

  • Patent number: 8422480
Abstract: A wireless network avoids delays in receiving status reports by having transmitters make sure that any outstanding Hybrid Automatic Repeat-reQuest (HARQ) processes in progress are all finished before sending the polling request. Thus, the receiver can respond to any polling request of the transmitter immediately without delay. Since the transmitter already ensures all HARQ processes are done, the receiver's status report will accurately reflect the latest information. The transmitter may send a poll anytime regardless of the HARQ processes if the most up-to-date polling is determined to be not as important (e.g., when the transmitter is trying to advance its transmitter window, in which case the exact Status info is not critical). The receiver may then react immediate upon receiving the poll. Thereby, detecting the loss of any piece of data within a data burst is expedited.

  • Patent number: 8400997
Abstract: A communication system comprising one or more wireless stations programmed to await for an authorizing signal to initiate wireless communications with a network controller or access point. The network controller maintains identification information in different queues, said queues based upon the wireless station's activity. The wireless station identification information is moved between the different queues in response to wireless station activity. Between polling, each mobile station aggregates data for the next opportunity to transmit. Multi-polling may be employed such that more than a single station is polled at a time. Polling is accomplished by polling one of the more active station along with a less active station. The less active station is unlikely to transmit, so collisions are avoided to a certain degree. If a lesser active station becomes active, it is moved into the more active queue and consequently will be polled more often.

Abstract: An apparatus for controlling Quality of Service (QoS) of a master Bluetooth® terminal in a piconet. A file-specific band setting unit sets information about files and information about bandwidths set for the files, which are stored in the master Bluetooth® terminal, for a content meta database. A QoS controller checks the content meta database when an arbitrary slave Bluetooth® terminal requests file download service, and provides the set bandwidth information of the corresponding file. A balancing Bluetooth® Network Encapsulation Protocol (BNEP) creates a virtual interface when the slave Bluetooth® terminal is accessed, and sets a bandwidth of the virtual interface, which is set for the slave Bluetooth® terminal requesting the download service, to a bandwidth of the corresponding file when the set bandwidth information of the file for which the download service is requested is received from the QoS controller, and provides the download service to the slave Bluetooth® terminal.
