  • Patent number: 8059578
Abstract: A communications system includes a plurality of Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) mesh networks formed by a plurality of wireless nodes. Each plurality of wireless nodes within a respective TDMA mesh network comprises a transmitter and receiver that communicate on a primary and optionally at least one secondary frequency and use a TDMA epoch that is divided into at least a beacon interval using the primary frequency and a digital data interval using the primary and secondary frequencies. The wireless nodes are synchronized to each other such that the start of TDMA epochs for each TDMA mesh network overlap and have the same TDMA epoch duration or an integer multiple thereof.

  • Patent number: 8059608
Abstract: Multiple-In Multiple-Out (MIMO) techniques are used to increase spectral efficiency of a cellular single frequency network. In some embodiments with single transmit antenna per cell, multiple data streams are transmitted from multiple cells, one data stream per set of transmit antennae. The mapping of streams to antenna sets is permuted in time. In this way, user equipment devices (UEs) at cell edges benefit from MIMO, and UEs near cell centers benefit from high carrier-to-interference (C/I) ratio of the signal. In some embodiments, each stream is concurrently transmitted on base layer of a hierarchically modulated signal from one set, and on enhancement layer of a hierarchically modulated signal from another set. The mapping of sets to streams is permuted in time. The UEs at cell edges benefit from MIMO, and the UEs near cell centers benefit from the high C/I to decode both streams from the base and enhancement layers.

  • Patent number: 8059616
Abstract: A method, medium, and wireless system are provided for scheduling access terminals to prevent starvation of other access terminals connected to a communication network. The wireless system includes access terminals and base stations that are configured with a first wireless scheduler and a parallel wireless scheduler that select access terminals to communicate during specified time slots. The access terminals may measure channel conditions associated with communications to the base station and transmit requests that specify a desired communication rate to the base station. The first and parallel wireless schedulers on each base station receive the requests from each access terminal and select an access terminal to communicate during a subsequent time slot that may be based on, for example, the channel conditions and weighted average functions of the communication rates—corresponding to the access terminal—generated by the first and parallel wireless schedulers.

Abstract: Systems and methods which control communications in a carrier sense multiple access environment to provide a balance between communication sensitivity and transmission availability are shown. Adaptive interference control techniques of embodiments operate to determine a media error time metric representing the time associated with receiving interfering signals. The media error time metric of embodiments is used to adjust operation of various network systems in order to adjust communication sensitivity and/or transmission availability. Desensitizing thresholds and sensitizing thresholds may be used to define operating boundaries, such that desensitizing thresholds are used to control network desensitize actions which result in decreased error times and sensitizing thresholds are used to control network sensitizing actions which result in increased error times. Error time metrics and corresponding desensitizing and sensitizing thresholds may be utilized with respect to a plurality of radios.

  • Patent number: 8054853
Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for supporting native TDM and native Packet switching simultaneously in a meshed switching architecture. Specifically with the present invention, the meshed links are common to both TDM and packet traffic, and both types terminate to a common system interface without the need to separate physical resources and infrastructure; the common termination function has access to both the TDM (Time Slot Interchange (TSI)) switching and packet switching elements. Native TDM switching and packet switching operate in concurrently in the mesh over common links, with the personality of the links derived by the card type (attached to the mesh). In this, a given card or slot in a system can communicate in the native format to both packet based cards (slots) or TDM based cards (slots) simultaneously with no preconceived restrictions or limitations on slot or link definition.

  • Patent number: 7957418
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in increasing data throughput to mobile stations in a wireless communication network, where data is communicated between mobile stations and the wireless network in a plurality of data bursts within time slots assigned to the mobile station. One illustrative method includes the acts of receiving, through a wireless transceiver, data in a time slot W; tuning the wireless transceiver, during a first portion of a time slot X which follows the time slot W, for transmission; reading transmit data from a transmit data queue and encoding the transmit data in a data burst in accordance with a data burst format; and causing the encoded transmit data to be transmitted in the data burst during a second portion of the time slot X. The data burst may be formatted in accordance with a predefined data burst format of the wireless network and merely shifted in time, or the data burst may be formatted in accordance with a reduced-size data burst format.

  • Patent number: 7957313
Abstract: A method and diagnosis apparatus are provided. A velocity measuring section measures a bit length of communication carried out between nodes based upon a communication signal inputted from a communication bus. The measured bit length is input to a control section, which sets a bit length based upon input from the velocity measuring section and arranges the communication section to decode the communication signal. The communication section specifies a frame reception time and a frame ID as an identification code of a time slot in which a frame is transmitted. Each time the frame is received after setting the bit length, the control section records information of the frame reception time and the frame ID inputted from the communication section in a log file. The control section determines whether the frame is transmitted in a constant period from each time slot based upon the content of the log file.

  • Patent number: 7949007
Abstract: Methods are provided for generating clusters of actions for manipulating the packets of a communication protocol. A declarative description is input specifying a hierarchical tree structure including a leaf module for each action and instance modules. One instance module is a root of the hierarchical tree structure and each module except the root is a child of an instance module. A constraint specification is input of dependent pairs of the actions. A cluster for each leaf module includes the action of the leaf module. For each instance module, one or more clusters are generated that collectively include the actions in each cluster of each child of the instance module. The actions in each cluster of each child are included in the same cluster, and each dependent pair of the actions is not included in a same cluster. A cluster specification is output for the cluster or clusters of the root.

  • Patent number: 7936710
Abstract: The invention refers to a system, apparatus and method for carrying out a SIM-based authentication of a user accessing a WLAN, without having provided yet an IP connectivity, along with a layer-2 encryption mechanism for protecting the path between the Terminal Equipment and the Mobile network. Therefore, the invention provides a method for establishing a PPP-tunneling for AKA dialogues between the terminal and an Access Controller for accessing the mobile network owning the SIM. The invention also provides an Access Controller (AC) comprising a Point-to-Point over Ethernet (PPPoE) server for tunneling AKA dialogues from a PPP-client installed in the terminal for the same purpose, and also comprising a Traffic Router and a RADIUS-client. The AC thus including a RADIUS-client is interposed between a RADIUS-proxy accessed from the access points (AP) in the WLAN and the mobile network where SIM-based authentication is carried out.

  • Patent number: 7936775
Abstract: A data stream is transmitted at a current transmission rate utilizing a first bandwidth allocation, the current transmission rate being less than an original transmission rate. A transmission rate recovery request is received from a master device on the network. The transmission rate recovery request instructs the network device to adjust the current transmission rate. An additional bandwidth allocation is obtained from the master device on the network and the current transmission rate is responsively increased to provide substantially the original transmission rate utilizing a total bandwidth allocation. The total bandwidth allocation includes the additional bandwidth allocation and the first bandwidth allocation.

Abstract: In a network comprising a source, a destination, and intermediate nodes along a route between the source and the destination, techniques are provided for allocating one or more time slots to transmit a particular data stream along the route based on the QoS requirements to transmit the particular data stream. In one implementation, a Scout Request message (SRM) is sent from the source to the destination to allocate time slots along the route to transmit a particular data stream to the destination. The SRM can include QoS requirements to transmit the particular data stream. Each intermediate node along the route can allocate one or more time slots to transmit the particular data stream based on the QoS requirements needed to transmit the particular data stream along the route.
