A LAN resource manager (LRM) is provided for managing the LAN resources by providing solutions for providing users with several levels of QoS. Once the LRM admits a user at a certain QoS level, the level is assured within the LAN for as long as the user is in the LAN. A user may submit a request to transmit data to the LRM. The LRM may determine if time allocation is possible and allocate the time slots for data transmission. The LRM may send time slot allocation information to an Access Server in a LAN, which may inform the user of the time slot allocation and prepare a queue according to the slot allocation information.

The clear channel waiting time itself may be specified by a network master device as part of a network connection process.

The low power “link-suspend” (LS) mode reduces the power consumption of a LAN communications link at the physical layer by eliminating the need to transmit continuous standard idles to maintain link between two linked partners. In the LS mode, a low duty cycle “link-suspend-packet” (LSP) is transmitted between periods of silent line state (SLS). During the SLS, which is a non-data transmission period, the transmitter may be turned off to conserve power. The transmitter power is turned back on when it is time to transmit LSPs or data.

A portion of each cycle is reserved for the transmission of asynchronous data, the remainder being utilized for isochronous streams. Before transmitting a new stream a transmitter wins one or more open slots by arbitration, wherein the winner is selected based on the priority of the stream to be sent. Transmitters may obtain extra slots to improve quality, integrity, or security of the stream. The mechanisms of the invention are compatible with legacy CDMA devices.

Additionally, the position of the return-transmitted data can be determined and compared with a nominal position.

    Abstract: An ADSL transceiver has a sleep state, in which the received signal is not fully processed, thus reducing a load on a host processor hosting the ADSL transceiver. By arranging for the transceiver to be in a normal state when data is being received or expected to be received, the chance of missing data when not fully processing the received signal is reduced. The transceiver can be prompted to exist the sleep state when data is being transmitted and/or periodically. If no data is detected after a period of time in the normal state, the transceiver returns to the normal state. To avoid introducing errors are the receive section of the transceiver returns to full operation, selected outputs of the transceiver are blocked or ignored by higher layers. To quickly recover from a sleep mode, the receive section might perform minimal maintenance operations, such as maintaining timing and logical boundaries, such as frame counters, interleave boundaries and cell boundaries.
