Having Indication Of Idle Or Busy State Of Time Slot Patents (Class 370/459)
  • Patent number: 6058289
Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficient use of both power and bandwidth in a cellular communications system in which a Mobile Unit preferably enters Sleep-Mode when no communications have occurred between the Mobile Unit and the Base Station over a predetermined amount of time measured by an "Idle Timer". Upon expiry of a Wake Timer, the Mobile Unit awakes from Sleep-Mode to determine whether a message is pending. Concurrently, the Base Station transmits a "TEI-Notification" message directed to all Mobile Units to notify each Mobile Unit that has data pending. A system parameter determines the intervals at which the Base Station will transmit these notifications. Upon waking to receive a TEI-Notification message, the Mobile Unit determines whether the quality of the transmission is at least sufficient to allow the Mobile Unit to decipher the TEI-Notification message.

  • Patent number: 6052411
Abstract: A system and method for generating and repetitively transmitting a single modulated symbol during idle periods in user data in a digital subscriber line (DSL) communication system. The modulated symbol to be transmitted is selected such that its spectral properties match those of user data modulated symbols. For an asynchronous DSL system, and variants thereof, a preferred idle symbol is the "superframe" synchronization symbol. A separate modulated symbol would indicate the end of the idle state. In the preferred embodiment, the end-of-idle symbol is the idle symbol shifted by a 180.degree. phase shift. In a preferred embodiment, the transmitter in a DSL modem would calculate the idle state modulated symbol once at the start of the idle period and then simply repeat this symbol until the end of the idle period, in which case the transmitter would invert the final idle symbol. At the receiver, an idle state modulated symbol detector and phase detector are implemented.

  • Patent number: 5960001
Abstract: A contention protocol permitting transmission of isochronous data. A device (104) wishing to transmit isochronous data can reserve periodic time slots for the transmission. Either the device (104) or a network controller (101) transmits the reservation information to other devices (106, 108) on the network. When non-isochronous transmissions are desired, the devices (104, 106, 108) contend for access using the CSMA/CD protocols, but taking into account the already reserved time slots. For example, the reserved period may be added to the randomly chosen backoff window. Alternatively, if a backoff window expires during a reserved period, the backoff window may be restarted upon completion of the reserved period. If not all the devices (104, 106, 108) on the network employ this modified CSMA/CD protocol, a "dummy" frame is provided at the beginning of each isochronous transmission. If another device is contending for access, the dummy frame collides, and the other device backs off.

  • Patent number: 5896376
Abstract: A broadcast message indicating the utilization level associated with Stand-alone Dedicated Control Channels (SDCCH) within a mobile telecommunications network serving a particular geographic area is transmitted over a broadcast channel. A plurality of mobile stations located within that particular geographic area monitoring the broadcast channel then receives the transmitted message. Thereafter, a mobile service request with a lower priority level than the indicated status level is queued by the associated mobile station and delayed until the channel utilization level rescinds to a network acceptable level.

  • Patent number: 5881061
Abstract: A data communication method is provided by the present invention for carrying out a radio communication by intermingling circuit-switched communication and packet-switched communication using the TDMA communication mode between a radio base station and multiple radio terminals. An idle slot among slots for traffic channel is assigned for a generated circuit-switched data in order, and an idle slot among slots for control channel that belongs to a frame wherein a control signal is not transmitted for a generated packet-switched data, by this method. By assigning an idle slot among slots for control channel for packet-switched data, this method allows intermingling with the good efficiency of the circuit-switched communication and the packet-switched communication.

  • Patent number: 5838687
Abstract: The present invention relates to a slot reuse method and arrangement for increasement of the throughput in a DTM (Dynamic Synchronous Transfer Mode) network. The slot reuse according to the invention comprises extending the DTM block token format to include parameters describing the segment(s) between source and destination node, reserving block token capacity only on the segment(s) between source and destination node, and enabling simultaneous transmissions in the same slot over disjointed segments of the network. The slot reuse can also comprise merging two or more segment-consecutive tokens, representing the same slot range, into a single token when existing in the free pool of a node.

  • Patent number: 5771234
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for scheduling the assignment and writing of cells from cell sources into a outgoing bitstream transmitted from each device of an ATM communications network. The timeslots are organized into fixed length cycles which cycles each have a sequence of N timeslots, where N is an integer >1. Furthermore, each cycle is divided into at least one round comprising a variable length subsequence of the timeslots of the cycle. During each timeslot of a uniform timeslot clock, at least one subset of the sources is identified. Each subset corresponds to a round. One cell from each subset is assigned to, and written into, a respective timeslot of the corresponding round. During each timeslot of the timeslot clock, each of the sources is assigned a priority state depending on how many cells of that source have been previously assigned to timeslots during the current cycle and whether or not that source has a cell available for assignment to a round during that timeslot.

  • Patent number: 5742589
Abstract: A radio apparatus according to a TDMA/TDD system uses its own transmitter and receiver so as to perform a loopback test for checking normality of the apparatus during a period of an unassigned slot. A loopback test signal is output from its own transmitter during an unassigned transmitting slot and is received by its own receiver. The signal is temporarily stored in a memory and is read during an unassigned receiving slot. The apparatus thus performs a loopback test. Since a loopback test can be performed by use of its own transmitter and receiver during an unassigned slot, a transmitting and receiving device (tester) specifically used for a loopback test is not required. Also, a loopback test can be carried out even while normal communications are being made.

  • Patent number: 5737325
Abstract: A connection method of a digital cordless telephone apparatus allows communication between a first calling side portable unit and a second called side portable unit of the plurality of portable units. The first portable unit transmits an access request signal for requesting a call to the second portable unit. A base unit receives an access request signal and determines whether or not there are any transmission slots and reception slots available for connecting the first portable unit to the second portable unit via the base unit. If there are the available transmission slots and reception slots, then the base unit uses usable slots to allow a call between the first portable unit and the second portable unit. If there are no available transmission slots and reception slots, then the base unit transmits a control signal including busy information.

  • Patent number: 5689503
Abstract: When data is transferred by using a plurality of time slots, the transferring period is shortened by adopting priority to assign the required number of slots. The base station BS which accepted packet P1 generates a "BUSY" signal and an echo at the final portion of the first time slot TS which begins at time t4. The base station BS, recognizing that there is a packet following the packet P1, generates a "RESERVED" signal at the final portion of the time slot TS which begins at time t5. The mobile station MS-A learns that the first time slot is assigned by recognizing the "BUSY" signal and the echo, and that the second time slot is also assigned by recognizing the "RESERVED" signal. Therefore, the first and second time slots are used successively for fast transferring.

  • Patent number: 5668807
Abstract: Transparent Time Division Multiplexer (TDM) Superchannels including multiple time slots assigned to a single logical channel are synchronized between transmitter and receiver. For a given time slot in an idle logical channel (286), the transmitter only starts transmitting output if this is the first time slot assigned to the logical channel (288) and output is available for the logical channel (290). Starting to transmit output is postponed (289) if this is not the first time slot assigned to the logical channel. Correspondingly, the receiver only expects new data blocks to start in the first time slot assigned to the logical channel.
