    Abstract: An electronic device includes a case containing a universal serial bus (USB) transmission port, an embedded control unit, a central processing unit, a power supply unit and a multiplex control unit. The multiplex control unit has a first usage mode and a second usage mode. The multiplex control unit is normally in the first usage mode, and switches to the second usage mode when a switch signal is received. In the first usage mode, the multiplex control unit is powered by the power supply unit, and the multiplex control unit builds up a first transmission path between the central control unit and the USB transmission port. In the second usage mode, the multiplex control unit is powered by an external device connected to the USB transmission port, and the multiplex control unit builds up a second transmission path between the embedded control unit and the USB transmission port.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for performing multiplexing of video or other content (e.g., programs) within a network using feed-back from a subsequent digital program insertion stage, and/or feed-forward information from a prior multiplexing stage. In one embodiment, the network comprises a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) cable network having headend and hub-based statistical multiplexing stages, and communication between the two stages is used to improve the visual quality performance and bandwidth utilization of the output multi-program stream during conditions where downstream content is inserted into the transport stream. Business methods associated with the various multiplexing features described above are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A system and method are provided for transporting Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH) tributaries. The method accepts a plurality of PDH tributaries; generates a serial data stream of interleaved PDH tributaries; generates a serial control stream of signals for recovering the PDH tributaries; and, generates a clock signal for timing the data and control streams. The serial data stream of interleaved PDH tributaries is loaded into the payload of a data frame structure. Likewise, the serial control stream is loaded into the payload of a control frame structure. The data bytes of the serial data stream and the control bytes of the serial control stream are both transmitted at the same data rate. That is, there is a control byte generated for each data byte. Thus, the control bytes in the control frame structure are aligned with corresponding data bytes in the data frame structure.
