  • Patent number: 8559532
Abstract: To assist with the detection of unfiltered device(s), a system observes how the received noise changes between two links as the transmit signal is changed. Harmful unfiltered nonlinear devices will generate significant noise that depends on the transmitted signals; therefore, this additional noise can be quantified to some extent by comparing the observed noise for two different transmit signals. The total noise can be determined from the SNR if the received signal is known. The received signal may be read directly in some non-standard systems, or it may be determined from the known transmit signal and channel attenuation, which is sometimes the case in standard-compliant links, but often with a relatively large error. To circumvent this problem, certain embodiments of this invention only consider the change in noise between two links with the same channel attenuation. This differential comparison makes it unnecessary to accurately know the channel attenuation.

  • Patent number: 8548105
Abstract: Techniques for performing joint time-frequency automatic gain control (AGC) by a receiver are described. In an aspect, the receiver may transform time-domain samples with a fast Fourier transform (FFT) to obtain frequency-domain symbols and may detect for saturation of the frequency-domain symbols. The receiver may adjust a gain based on whether saturation is detected and may apply the gain prior to the FFT. In one design, the receiver may use a nominal value for a setpoint if saturation is not detected and may reduce the setpoint if saturation is detected. The receiver may adjust the gain based on the setpoint, which may determine the average power of the time-domain samples. In another design, the receiver may determine the gain based on a gain offset and may vary the gain offset based on whether saturation is detected. For both designs, the receiver may apply the gain on digital samples and/or an analog signal prior to the FFT.

Abstract: Data indicative of a level of stability of a DSL link is received. Based on the received data, it is determined whether the data indicates a level of stability of the DSL link that is above or below a minimum threshold. If the level of stability of the DSL link is below the minimum threshold, die noise associated with the DSL link before the time of failure is compared with the noise associated with the DSL link after the time of failure. If the difference between the noise before and after the time of failure exceeds a threshold, then the difference in noise is characterized as a stationary noise associated with the DSL link. However, if the difference between the noise before and after the time of failure is below the threshold, a determination is made whether the failure is associated with a loss of power to the DSL link or a severe impulse noise event—the difference in noise is characterized accordingly.

  • Patent number: 8514917
Abstract: A digital subscriber line ‘XDSL’ communication system for provisioning multi-tone modulated communications over two subscriber lines with two modems. The first modem has shared and discrete components forming a transmit path coupled exclusively to an end of a first of the two subscriber lines and a receive path coupled exclusively to an end of a second of the two subscriber lines. The second modem also has shared and discrete components forming a transmit path and a receive path having couplings of transmit and receive path components to corresponding opposing ends of the two subscriber lines diametrically opposite to those of the first modem, whereby the modems provision the first subscriber line exclusively for unidirectional communication from the first to the second modem, and provision the second subscriber line for unidirectional communication in the opposite direction, specifically from the second modem to the first modem. A related method and modem are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8503557
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for sending a data block in an OFDM, or other MCM, communication system with reduced PAPR is provided. The data block is combined with a random scrambling sequence. An IDFT operation is performed upon the combined sequence, and its PAPR, peak-to-average power ratio, is calculated. The PAPR is compared against a threshold. If the PAPR is smaller than a threshold, the transformed, combination sequence is transmitted. Otherwise, a different scrambling sequence, if available, is used to form a new combination sequence, and the process iterates until either a PAPR smaller than the threshold is obtained, or a pre-defined maximum number of iterations is reached. If the maximum number of iterations is reached and no combination sequence is created that leads to an acceptable PAPR, then the transformed, combination sequence that exhibits the smallest PAPR level is selected for transmission.

  • Patent number: 8503592
Abstract: A communication system and method is disclosed that performs symbol boundary synchronization by generating a symbol alignment estimate from a partial signal correlation; and then refining the symbol alignment estimate via a carrier phase calculation. To generate the symbol alignment estimate, two methods are disclosed. After an estimate is determined, an embodiment provides for refining the symbol alignment estimate via a carrier phase calculation by determining a carrier phase of two adjacent carriers, determining a phase error as directly proportional to an offset from the start of a symbol, determining a phase difference contribution due to a communication channel and device hardware, and counter-rotating the determined carrier phase by an angle of a constellation point at a transmitter.

An input channel is provided that is in communication with the divider and an analog-to-digital converter. The input channel has a first bandwidth and the converter has a second bandwidth that is broader than the first bandwidth. The single oscillator (VCO/DCO) operates at a frequency higher than frequencies inside the reception band such as the FM band. The divider divides the frequency of the single oscillator that is used as input when producing overlapping sub-bands that cover the entire reception band.

  • Patent number: 8503517
Abstract: A system is provided for transmitting information through a speech codec (in-band) such as found in a wireless communication network. A modulator transforms the data into a spectrally noise-like signal based on the mapping of a shaped pulse to predetermined positions within a modulation frame, and the signal is efficiently encoded by a speech codec. A synchronization sequence provides modulation frame timing at the receiver and is detected based on analysis of a correlation peak pattern. A request/response protocol provides reliable transfer of data using message redundancy, retransmission, and/or robust modulation modes dependent on the communication channel conditions.
