  • Publication number: 20030219137
Abstract: A vehicle sound system encompasses a combination of speaker configuration, speaker placement, and sound processing to improve sound quality. A pair of speakers (or rows of speakers) are placed close together and located in the front of the console or dashboard with their geometric center on or near the vehicle's central axis. A sound processor acts to “spread” the sound image produced by the two closely spaced speakers by employing a cross-cancellation technique in which the cancellation signal is derived from the difference between the left and right channels. The resulting difference signal is scaled, delayed (if necessary), and spectrally modified before being added in opposite polarities to the left and right channels. The pair of speakers may be placed on a common baffle or mounting surface or in a common housing enclosure, with sound being carried through one or more ducts and emanating out of a slot.

Abstract: A digital sound processing design system for a vehicle audio system includes a computer and a design tool that is run by the computer. The design tool allows a user to define sound processing criteria that is stored in a template file. An audio signal processor is connected to the first and second real channel inputs of an audio source. Memory that is coupled to the audio signal processor stores the template file. The sound processing engine that is coupled to the audio signal processor and the memory reads the template file at run-time to obtain the sound processing criteria. The sound processing engine applies the sound processing criteria to the first and second real channel inputs. The design tool allows a user to create virtual channel inputs and outputs that are based, in part, on the first and second real channel inputs.

  • Patent number: 6477255
Abstract: A rear speaker and a front speaker are provided in a room. A microphone is disposed at a listening position between the front and rear speakers for picking up a first sound from the front speakers and a second sound from the rear speaker. Time lags of the first sound and the second sound is obtained from the outputs of the microphone, and the time difference between the time lags is obtained. An antiphase audio signal opposite to a reflected composite signal included in the first sound picked up by the microphone is provided by the sound field correcting circuit. The antiphase audio signal with the same amplitude is delayed based on the time difference and emitted from the rear speaker so as to cancel the reflected composite signal.

Abstract: An audio system for a vehicle that includes a first passenger location and a second passenger location, the second passenger location situated behind the first passenger location, the audio system including a first directional audio channel signal source; a surround audio channel signal source; a first electroacoustical transducer coupled to the first directional audio signal source and to the surround audio channel source, situated forward of the second passenger location and behind the first passenger location. The first electroacoustical transducer radiates sound waves corresponding to audio signals from the first directional audio channel signal source and corresponding to audio signals from the surround audio channel signal source. The system further includes a second electroacoustical transducer coupled to the first directional audio signal source, situated forward of the first electroacoustical transducer.

Abstract: An audio system for projecting sound toward a rear opening of an automotive vehicle is disclosed. Each side of the vehicle includes a speaker assembly mounted to a side interior wall between a side door and the rear opening of the vehicle. The assemblies each include a speaker housing containing a forwardly disposed speaker cone with an axis generally perpendicular to the vehicle side and a rearwardly disposed speaker cone with an axis disposed toward the rear opening at an angle of about 15 degrees relative to the forwardly disposed speaker cone axis. An audio transmitter is in signaling communication with each of the speaker cones for driving the speaker cones.

Abstract: An audio system, in particular for motor vehicles, having a loudspeaker installation for supplying sound to an audio chamber and a control unit with a signal detection unit for receiving microphone signals from at least one microphone exposed to the audio chamber outputting the signal to an evaluation unit which extracts interference signals from the microphone signals. The control unit produces control signals on the basis of these interference signals in order to operate the loudspeaker installation. To reduce the complexity for installation of such an audio system, at least one tweeter is connected in the loudspeaker installation as a microphone.

Abstract: An automotive multimedia entertainment system includes an integrated rear seat entertainment module in which audio signals coordinated with video entertainment devices in the rear seat can be reproduced using the vehicle's audio system. Multiplex control signals between an audio main control unit, rear seat entertainment module, and CD disc jockey allows free selection of sources for single and dual play modes. By sharing an external audio input of the main control unit, between the rear seat entertainment module and the CD disc jockey, a single version of the main control unit can be used in vehicles either with or without rear seat entertainment modules or CD disc jockeys.

  • Patent number: 6049268
Abstract: A vehicle remote control system includes a remote transmitter to be carried by a user, a receiver at the vehicle for receiving signals from the remote transmitter, an audible signal generator at the vehicle, and a controller connected to the receiver and being operable in response to a received signal. Moreover, the controller is also preferably connected to the audible signal generator for-causing generation of an audible signal based upon a received signal, and wherein the audible signal has at least one characteristic based on the transmission distance so that the audible signal is less intrusive for a shorter transmission distance. For example, the controller may determine the transmission distance based upon the received signal strength. In addition, the at least one characteristic may comprise one or more of a volume, duration, or frequency of the audible signal. The audible signal generation may be used for a vehicle security system, a remote keyless entry system, and/or a remote start system.
