  • Patent number: 5536091
Abstract: The contact angle of each of the balls of a thrust ball bearing for use with power rollers is deviated from 90 degrees. Thus the power roller is not easily displaced in the radial direction when radial loads are exerted. Also, the distance in the radial direction between the acting point of loads applied to the circumferential surface of the power roller and the contacting point of the rolling surface of each ball and the inner ring raceway is decreased. In this way, any bending stresses to be exerted on the power roller by the application of the aforesaid loads are eased. In another embodiment, the thickness dimension of the outer ring is made greater in the portion closer to the inner circumference, and smaller in the portion closer to the outer circumference with the outer ring raceway as boundary. Thus the width dimension of the circumferential surface of the power roller is made larger, and the strength of the outer ring is enhanced against bending stresses.

During normal drilling, the core barrel is freely suspended within the outer tube of the lower end of the drill string. In the event of blockage, the core barrel will automatically be pushed upwards causing the thrust race of the lower housing member to bias the bearings against the thrust race of the upper housing member. As the bearings encounter the ridges and indentations of the thrust races, a jarring vibration action is imparted to the core barrel, dislodging the blockage.

  • Patent number: 4986775
Abstract: A bidirectional thrust bearing system for the propeller shaft of a marine propulsion system includes a substantially circumferential groove milled into the propeller shaft. A pair of substantially semicircular force transferring members are adapted for placement within the groove, and front and rear bearing collars are placed adjacent the force transferring members. Front and rear needle bearings are provided adjacent the front and rear bearing collars, respectively. A front bearing adapter, interconnected with the walls of the cavity within which the propeller shaft is disposed, transfers forward thrust in the propeller shaft to the gearcase. A rear bearing carrier, held in position by means of a ring nut mounted within the cavity, serves to transfer rearward thrust in the propeller shaft to the gearcase.

  • Patent number: 4778287
Abstract: The invention concerns an annular multi-row bearing with shaped-wire races with an inner and an outer race, each of which constitutes part of the tracks for the rolling components, and with rolling components accommodated between them. The particular object is, in addition to others, to create a bearing that, although stable, is resilient enough when transverse forces occur to allow both races to twist in relation to each other within certain limits, avoiding stress. The invention attains this in that the contact or rolling surfaces between the races and the rolling components are provided with a contour that deviates from the rectilinear and mutually surrounds itself and in that these contact surfaces are shaped and/or positioned such that there is a four-point bearing in each track. This principle can be embodied with either ball bearings or roller bearings, whereby only three shaped wires are preferably employed. The angles of support range, depending on the type of bearing, between approximately 30.degree.

  • Patent number: 4773210
Abstract: The invention relates to an open-end rotor-spinning device with a rotor shaft which is mounted and driven in the wedge-shaped gap between supporting disks and to the free end of which is assigned an axial bearing. A simplified mounting, which also allows the supporting disks to be removed and exchanged while the machine is in operation, is provided because the rotor shaft (1) is mounted at two bearing points, of which one is formed by supporting disks (2, 3) arranged in the vicinity of the spinning rotor (10) and the second is a bearing (5) which absorbs axial and radial forces and which receives the free end (11) of the rotor shaft (1). An increase in the operating speed of the spinning rotor (10) without an increase in the running speed of the drive means (6) is achieved as a result of a reduction of the diameter of the rotor shaft (1) in the region of the drive means.

  • Patent number: 4708497
Abstract: A thrust bearing for use in a steerable McPherson strut suspension uses free molded seals, but is sealed at all times regardless of the axial forces acting on the bearing, and is maintained as a unitized structure as well. Retention flanges on the cage interfit with conical sealing surfaces of the races to limit axial race separation and unitize the bearing. Free molded seals with conical walls matching the respective sealing surfaces are maintained in a radial tension against the sealing surfaces by virtue of being supported on the cage and on the sealing surfaces with a stretch fit. The sealing walls are prevented from disengaging the sealing surfaces by the controlled race axial separation, and the tension of the sealing engagement actually increases because of the orientation of the sealing walls and sealing surfaces.
