Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus and method for recording transmitted data items, and particularly television and radio programmes. The data items are received at one or more inputs along with ID data identifying the transmitted data items and the programme series to which the data item belongs. An input interface receives input indicating whether one or more received transmitted data items have been viewed or recorded by a user and a processor generates values for ranking the series to which each of the received data items belong based upon the received input. Subsequently received transmitted data items are stored in a storage device based on the generated values, the stored data items belonging to a series for which a value has been generated.

  • Patent number: 8724968
Abstract: The total running time of an original program signal, with related embedded ancillary data is altered to generate a time-shortened (or time-lengthened) program signal. The video signal embedded ancillary data packets are subject to separate processing without decoding payload text strings and caption information. The video portion of the original program signal is processed by deleting (or adding) individual frames on a manual, periodic or automatic basis. As fields or frames are removed (or added), corresponding ancillary data packets and text-based payload information are temporarily stored and analyzed such that data can be reassembled within the time-altered video program. Embedded circuitry determines the type of caption and subtitle information (HD/SD) and location within the Vertical Ancillary (VANC) and Horizontal Ancillary (HANC) packets for processing coupled with the original video signal.

  • Patent number: 8724964
Abstract: A method and system for managing multiple user locks and deletion requests on a digital video recorder (DVR) is disclosed. Files associated with the DVR can be protected from deletion by allowing users to lock a recorded file utilizing a number of locking strategies. The recorded file can also be locked by multiple users and the recording can be deleted when the users specifically remove the lock. A simpler interface for each user can be provided to prevent other users from deleting recorded files, which have not yet been viewed. Such an approach allows for an administrative override to prevent users from locking recordings and never unlocking in order to prevent the DVR exhausting disk space.

  • Patent number: 8689262
Abstract: A broadcast receiving device capable of easily setting area information. A control unit of a DVR transmits an acquisition request for area information to a TV. When the control unit receives a response to the acquisition request from the TV, the control unit extracts area information from the received response and performs a channel presetting using the extracted area information. A control unit of the TV has area information stored therein. When the control unit receives an acquisition request for area information from the DVR, the control unit transmits, as a response to the request, the stored area information to the DVR.

  • Patent number: 8687942
Abstract: A data processing apparatus which divides stream data into portions is disclosed. An evaluation value calculating section calculates an evaluation value at a dividing candidate position of the stream data based on an evaluation function. A comparing section compares the evaluation value calculated by the evaluation value calculating section with a predetermined threshold value. A dividing candidate position obtaining section obtains the dividing candidate position of the stream data in each predetermined unit. A controlling section decides a dividing position of the stream data based on a compared result of the comparing section. A controlling section causes the dividing candidate position obtaining section to obtain a second dividing candidate position when the compared result of the comparing section denotes that the evaluation value at the first dividing candidate position does not exceed the threshold value.

Abstract: The application manager 37 conducts “application signaling” when a first disc is replaced with a second disc. At this point, an application is continued if it is written in an application management table assigned to a Title played last on a first disc and also written in an application management table assigned to a Title to be played first on a second disc. On the other hand, an application is ended is it is written in the application management table assigned to the Title played last on the first disc but not written in the application management table assigned to the Title to be played first on the second disc.

  • Patent number: 8687945
Abstract: Methods and apparatus provide for an abstract model interpreter that defines an abstract model to represent an interactive video. The abstract model is defined independent of any export format. An interface for the abstract model is created to concurrently manage interpreting the abstract model according to a plurality of different export formats. For example, the abstract model interpreter can map a feature of the interactive video, which is described in the abstract model, to a corresponding feature supported by an export format. The interface is thereby utilized to interpret the abstract model to create a formatted interactive video, which is a version of the abstract model compliant with an export format from the plurality of different export formats. The interface further provides an edit capability that allows a user to modify how the feature of the interactive video is to be supported by any of the different export formats.

Abstract: AVClip recorded in BD-ROM is obtained by multiplexing a graphics stream and a video stream. The graphics stream is a PES packet sequence that includes 1) PES packets storing graphics data (ODS) and 2) PES packets storing control information (PCS). In each ODS, values of DTS and PTS indicate a timing of decoding start for corresponding graphics data, and a timing of decoding end for corresponding graphics data, respectively. In each PCS, a value of PTS indicates a display timing of corresponding decoded graphics data combined with the video stream.

  • Patent number: 8682139
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for starting playback of an audio portion of digital media content before a video portion of the digital media content is received. An advantage of the disclosed technique is that the perceived delay from the time when a user selects the digital media content to when playback of the digital media content begins is reduced. The audio may be faded-in and one or more still frames of video data may be displayed while the video stream is retrieved. Additionally, a license for DRM (Digital Rights Management) encryption of the title content may be retrieved before starting playback of the video stream, so that the digital media content that is retrieved is also protected.
