  • Patent number: 6782632
Abstract: Described is a writing instrument-caliper system composed of a fully functional writing instrument and a separate caliper device. The writing instrument and caliper device are of such construction that the caliper device can be inserted snugly into the open-ended hollow barrel of the writing instrument for safe storage. With the caliper device in its storage location, the writing instrument-caliper system is of similar outer physical dimensions to the writing instrument alone, and can be carried safely in a shirt pocket without risk of injury to the user or it can be employed as a fully functional writing instrument. With the caliper device removed from its storage location, the writing instrument and caliper device can be employed in parallel, allowing the user to make written notations while simultaneously making measurements with the caliper device. This writing instrument-caliper system overcomes many of the problems encountered by prior art devices.

  • Patent number: 6659673
Abstract: A multi-functional writing instrument which includes a combination pocket clip and stylus for input devices, such as personal digital assistants. The writing instrument includes a body having a cap portion, and the combination clip member and stylus having first and second ends, wherein an actuator tip is mounted to the second end and the clip member is mounted to the cap portion and slidably movable with respect thereto. The clip member is slidably movable relative to the body between a clamping position, for attachment to a pocket, and a stylus position, where the actuator tip of the clip member is extended beyond one end of the instrument's body enabling engagement with a touch screen. The instrument allows the user to conveniently switch from writing on conventional media, for example paper, to inputting data in a personal digital assistant.

Abstract: An apparatus structured as a writing instrument and providing the functionality of a writing instrument such as a pen, with additional functionality including that of a joystick, a mouse, a stylus, or a keyboard. One embodiment of the writing instrument structure includes piezoelectric sensors for measuring force of the writing instrument against a surface in three directions, acceleration of the writing instrument in three directions, tilt of the writing instrument two directions, magnetic field surrounding the writing instrument in two directions, and energy dissipation during a motion or sequence of motions. The various measurements can allow for reconstruction of the writing instrument motion, thereby allowing control of other devices. The biometric data can be combined with other data to provide inputs to a biometric authentication system including a signature verification system.

Abstract: A writing instrument and associated carrier compartment that include electronic components. A communications link can be established between the writing instrument and the carrier compartment to allow dual direction communication between the carrier compartment and the writing instrument. A biometric database includes information for registered writing instrument users. A registered user can initiate data requests through the writing instrument, providing as authorization newly collected biometric data. The carrier compartment can receive the request, process the request by contacting a respective service or data provider, and transfer the request with the collected biometric data to the service provider. The service provider, as a subscriber to the biometric database, processes the request upon verification of the biometric data. A pre-established user account can reflect the requested transaction.

Abstract: An input pen is capable of being held in any one of input pen holding parts (212A) respectively having different shapes of various personal digital assistants (212). The input pen has a barrel (201), and stopping members (209) fitted in the opposite end parts of the metal tube (208). An elastic member (210) is placed between the stopping members (209) so as to push the stopping members (209) outward. The metal tube (208) is fitted in openings (207A) formed in the barrel (201). When the input pen is inserted in an input pen holding part (212A) of the personal digital assistant (212), the stopping members (209) properly projecting outside through the openings (207A) of the barrel (201) are pressed against the inner surface of the input pen holding part (212A). Thus, the input pen will not move even if there is a space between the barrel (201) and the inner surface of the input pen holding part (212A).
