Patent number: 6742960Abstract: Vehicular and/or walk behind vibratory compactors utilize a vibrated roller or plate to impose compaction forces on a densifiable strata, such as ground soil, a roadway base material or pavement. Utilizing a rotating energy source, such as a engine or hydraulic motor, to create the vibration appears to have reached its limit in the ability to provide a wide range of vibration frequencies and amplitudes to satisfy the ever increasing demands placed on vibratory compactors. Instead of relying upon rotational energy, the present invention contemplates the use of a linear oscillator to produce the vibrations, and preferably utilizes at least one electromagnet to control the frequency(s) and amplitude(s) of a compacting vibration. The present invention finds potential application in a wide range of vibratory compactors, including walk behind models that utilize a plate and larger vehicular models that include one or more vibrating rollers.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 2002Date of Patent: June 1, 2004Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Paul T. Patent number: 6547484Abstract: A cutting head is provided for milling rumble strip depressions in a road surface. The cutting head has a center rotational axis and a transverse diameter that varies along the length of the rotational axis so that an outer cutting surface of the cutting head defines a plane curve, such as an ellipsoid with truncated ends. The cutting head is mounted on a milling machine and rotated about the rotational axis as it is moved alternately up and down into the road surface. As the milling machine moves down the road, the movement of the cutting head creates spaced apart rumble strip depressions in the road. Because of the elliptical configuration of the cutting head cutting surface, the dimensions of the depressions can be varied along both the forward and lateral axes by simply varying the depth of cut. The curved profile of the cutting head along the rotational axis creates rumble strip depressions that avoid the sharp ninety degree corners and vertical side walls found in conventional rumble strips.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2002Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignee: Dustrol, Inc.Inventor: Tim L. Patent number: 6350083Abstract: A powered rotary screed provides a powered strike tube that rotates to provide a finish to wet concrete during screeding and a drive tube that provides motive power to the screed to assist with the difficult task of removing excess concrete from a poured pad, or other horizontal concrete surface. No framework or other supporting structure extends between ends of the screed thereby making the screed more portable than comparable screeds having a structure that supports the roller tubes and extends the length of the screed. Handles are pivotally coupled to plates at each end of the screed to maneuver and control the screed during operation. Because the handles are pivotally mounted, they can be pivoted outward to permit the screed to maneuver close to obstacles located near the pad.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1999Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Inventor: Tod Paladeni

Patent number: 6273637Abstract: A compactor including a forward and rearward compaction wheel each rotatably supported on a support arm and pivotally connected to a main frame. The forward compaction wheel is pivoted to a position aligned forwardly of and positioned below the rearward compaction wheel when in an operating position. A pair of diverter panels are connected to the frame and extend longitudinally on opposing sides of the rearward compactor wheel to divert fill dirt towards the compactor wheels. Each diverter panel has a diverter wing pivotally connected thereto with the diverter wings diverging outwardly and forwardly. The diverter wings are pivotally connected at a point of the forward compaction wheel and proximal thereto. The diverter panels are preferably parallel to one another and extend rearwardly beyond the rearward compaction wheel. The diverter wings preferably extend forwardly beyond the forward compaction wheel.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1999Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Inventor: Randell D. Peterson

Patent number: 6224293Abstract: A vibration generator includes a weight member, a shaft rotatable about an axis of rotation extending longitudinally therethrough and having a mounting area on which the weight member is mounted, and a positioning arm disposed in engagement with the weight member on the shaft and rotatable about the axis of rotation relative to both the shaft and the weight member. The mounting area engages the weight member and prevents movement of the weight member relative to the shaft in a circumferential direction about the axis of rotation but permits movement of the weight member relative to the shaft in a radial direction orthogonal to the axis of rotation and coplanar with the circumferential direction. The weight member also defines an elongate positioning slot and the positioning arm includes an axially extending portion disposed through the positioning slot for slidable movement within the positioning slot during rotation of the positioning member relative to the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1999Date of Patent: May 1, 2001Assignee: Compaction America, Inc.Inventor: William M. Patent number: RE40505Abstract: A cutting head is provided for milling rumble strip depressions in a road surface. The curved profile of the cutting head along the rotational axis creates rumble strip depressions that avoid the sharp ninety degree corners and vertical side walls found in conventional rumble strips.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2005Date of Patent: September 16, 2008Assignee: Dustrol, Inc.Inventor: Tim L.
