Abstract: A road roller comprises a frame and a pair of drums, at least one of which is a guide drum, on which the frame is pivotally supported. A steering mechanism is attached to the guide drum for steering the road roller. The supporting mechanism for the guide drum includes a vertical pivot shaft coupled to the guide drum, a vertical anti-friction bearing on the pivot shaft for permitting the guide drum to pivot horizontally relative to the frame, and a flexible support coupled between the bearing and the frame for permitting limited lateral twisting of the guide drum relative to the frame. The flexible support comprises a pair of longitudinally spaced rubber mounts for absorbing longitudinal shocks but for inhibiting longitudinal twisting of the drum relative to the frame.
Abstract: A road roller comprises a central frame part, a main drive including a hydraulic pump and a steering control carried by the main frame part. Replaceable roller units each including a frame part detachably mounted on the central frame part at a front and rear end, respectively, of the central frame part comprise front and rear rollers. A hydraulic motor and a hydraulic steering mechanism are incorporated in at least one of the roller units, the hydraulic motor being connected to the hydraulic pump to be powered thereby for driving the roller and the steering mechanism being connected to the steering control for steering the roller.
Abstract: Road surfacing machine having a front support (e.g. wheels) and a rear support (e.g. a rotatable roller) on which it can move along a road to be surfaced thereby. The body of the machine, which includes a hopper for storing material to be laid and an outlet for discharging it, is supported on the supports. Metering means (e.g. a screed plate) is positioned between the supports and serves to form a layer of selected thickness and shape of the said material on the road base. Bearing means (e.g. horizontal pivots) enable free relative angular movement between the front support on the one side and the metering means and a rear support on the other side about a longitudinal axis and about a transverse axis. Also a road surfacing machine having a front support, a hopper and a screed member, and including profiling means which comprise means for indicating the height and means for indicating the angle of inclination of the screed member.
Abstract: A yard roller having a frame traversable over ground to be rolled by a drum rotatably mounted on the frame and arranged engaging ground over which the frame traverses. A power unit is mounted on the frame and connected to the drum for rotating the drum and moving the frame together with the drum.
Abstract: A vibrating roller is provided comprising a frame with a roller barrel mounted in the frame. The roller barrel includes first and second partial roller barrels, said first partial roller barrel including a central hollow shaft fixed thereto and extending axially therefrom. The second partial roller barrel is rotatingly mounted on said hollow shaft. A rotating unbalanced body is disposed in said hollow shaft for imparting vibratory motion to the first and second partial roller barrels. A prime mover is mounted on the frame, and drives the first and second partial roller barrels through a differential gear assembly. The differential gear assembly includes an externally toothed ring gear which is driven by a driving pinion which itself is drivingly connected to the prime mover. Connected to the externally toothed ring gear are a plurality of beveled pinion gears arranged to rotate about radial axes.
Abstract: Pavement striping tape is drawn through a guide mounted on a rolling machine by the direct action of the front pavement roller. The tape is delivered from a spool or spools on a first spindle mounted above the tape guide and the tape backing paper is automatically withdrawn from the tape and wound up on a spool or spools on a second spindle spaced from and rotationally powered from the first spindle. Both spindles are driven by the movement of the tape downwardly due to the direct action of the front pavement roller. The striping tape is pressed by the roller into hot fresh asphalt paving material during the final rolling of the asphalt.

Abstract: The invention relates to a safety device in road rollers, which have a guide rod with a guide handle so that they can be guided by an operator walking in front of or behind the road roller, and which are driven by an engine through drive transmission means arranged to be disabled, said safety device comprising a sensor element, which extends substantially along the length of the guide handle and responds to the operator grasping the guide handle, and further comprising servo means controlled by the sensor element and adapted to disable the drive transmission means upon releasing of the guide handle.

Abstract: A soil compactor has (1) an apparatus preceding it to measure characteristics of the soil significant to the compaction operation, and/or (2) an apparatus following it to measure characteristics of the soil after compaction. The soil compactor has one or more controls over the compaction operation. The controls are operated in accordance with the measurement indications of said apparatus.
Abstract: A concrete slab striker employs a counter-rotating roller to grade or strike off the surface of a freshly poured concrete slab while the concrete is still in the plastic state. An elongated roller is supported on a form bordering the concrete slab in engagement with the concrete surface. A manually movable support frame and pull device coupled to opposite ends of the roller allow workmen to pull the roller across the concrete slab. Simultaneously, the roller is rotated in a direction opposite to its direction of travel relative to the surface of the concrete slab. A thin coating of hardened concrete particles accumulates on the roller to impart a texturized surface to the concrete slab when cured.
Abstract: An implement, especially for lawn work, in which a lawn roller is rotatably supported beneath a substantially horizontal frame extending above the roller, with the frame having an element of hitch means in the forward end and tiltably supporting a cargo body which can be tilted upwardly to discharge the contents at the rearward end of the frame.
Abstract: An apparatus for grooming snowmobile trails is towed by a dirigible tracked vehicle and includes a generally horizontal main frame, a gooseneck hitch supporting the forward end of the frame in towing engagement with the tracked vehicle, a packing roller supporting the rear end of the frame which serves to pack the snow being groomed, a moldboard scraper mounted between the packing roller and the gooseneck hitch which serves to scrape and level the snow being groomed, and a cutting blade assembly mounted forwardly of the moldboard scraper cuts, breaks and moves snow to fill in grooves and level ridges. A floating pan secured to the rear end of the main frame smoothes the snow following packing by the roller. The snow breaking and cutting blade assembly includes a pair of opposed, spaced-apart cutting blades pivotally secured to the frame and inclined inwardly and rearwardly, and a central V-shaped cutting blade pivotally secured to the frame with the apex thereof directed forwardly.
Abstract: Apparatus for effecting passes of a self-propelled compacting machine following a spreading machine after the latter has laid a strip of surfacing composition. A guide vehicle is hitched to the spreading machine and is towed therewith, and has a guide member which may either have the contour of a closed geometrical figure such as a circle or be simply a pivot. The compacting machine turns about the guide vehicle along an epicycloidal path of travel. A sensing device on the compacting machine which may be a feeler or a flexible member is responsive to the variations of the radial distance between the compacting machine and guide member. The sensing device operates a limit switch when the variations exceed a predetermined amount which in turn controls an electrically operable hydraulic valve which communicates with a double-action cylinder and piston unit controlling in turn the direction of the front wheel of the compacting machine for increasing or decreasing the turning radius thereof.

Abstract: A method of soil compaction consists in, during compaction of the soil, applying a smaller auxiliary force around the area of the soil to which a larger compacting force is applied. In soil compacting apparatus a pneumatic tire is used for applying the auxiliary force and the compacting force is applied by a cylindrical or non-cylindrical compacting member located within the tire, the compacting member being adapted to contact the inner surface of the tire for applying the compacting force to the soil. In another embodiment, the compacting member is mounted adjacent the pneumatic tire on a common axle therewith.
