Patent number: 6698985Abstract: A bolt with a partially threaded shank has a plurality of locking grooves located on the shank between the thread and its head. The bolt is inserted through a component stack and spacing washers and a stepped reaction washer such that at least half of the locking grooves are left exposed. A deformable frusto-conical locking ring is positioned on a nut having a circular receiving cavity on one end. The nut and locking ring are positioned on the thread of the bolt and tightened so that the locking ring is deformed from a frusto-conical shape to a substantially flat disc such that its bore diameter is reduced, thereby retaining it within one of the locking grooves. The outer diameter of the receiving cavity abuts the stepped reaction washer.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2002Date of Patent: March 2, 2004Assignee: Bae Systems plcInventor: David William Gort

Patent number: 5662445Abstract: A compact locking nut has a body provided with a threaded bore along which the nut engages a thread so that upon rotation it will advance over a thread to a position suitable for securing and positioning a machine component such as a bearing. The nut has a machined back face along which it bears against the secured machine component and a front face at its other end. The body contains two grooves--one external in that it opens outwardly from the exterior surface and the other internal in that it opens into the bore--and these grooves divide the body into a clamping section, a locking section, and an intervening web which is thin enough to flex with relative ease. The external groove lies closest to the back face, whereas the internal groove lies closest to the front face. On its exterior the body has lands which extend out to the front face. Typically, the body derives from a forging having the lands and a bore.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1996Date of Patent: September 2, 1997Assignee: The Timken CompanyInventors: William E. Patent number: 5178500Abstract: A fastener and method for fastening panels is disclosed. The fastener comprises a bolt and a nut with a locking feature to prevent loosening of the fastener from vibration after it has been set. The locking feature comprises a frustoconical tip on the inserted end of the bolt that engages a retainer ring in the nut. When setting the fastener, the retainer ring deforms around the outer end of the tip and slides down the narrowing frustoconical surface of the tip until the fastener is fully set. Unthreading of the bolt from the nut is prevented since the retainer ring will resist deformation along the increasingly larger diameter portions of the frustoconical tip. In another aspect of the invention, the nut is provided with shear tabs which engage a wrenching tool. These tabs are designed to shear when the fastener is fully set to prevent further application of torque by the tool.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1991Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Assignee: Mag Aerospace Industries, Inc.Inventor: Edgar L.
