Patent number: 5452974Abstract: An improved deformable locking fastener system comprises a fastener, a deformable collar and a dedicated installation tool. The fastener has a threaded exterior defining a plurality of axial flutes which are configured to prevent of the collar from prematurely captivating the fastener during installation. The collar comprises a cylindrical forward portion, a central portion having an elliptical cross-sectional shape and a rearward portion having an elliptical cross-sectional shape. The collar portions have axial heights selected to maximize the strength of the collar and to minimize the weight of the collar. The installation tool contacts the collar along driving ridges which reduces the radial compression of the collar and increases the tangential driving force turning the collar during installation.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1993Date of Patent: September 26, 1995Assignee: Air Industries CorporationInventor: Lloyd Binns

Patent number: 5145300Abstract: An improved deformable locking fastener system comprises a bolt, a deformable collar and an installation tool. The bolt has a threaded exterior for engaging the collar. The collar has an axial bore threaded to engage the bolt. The exterior of the collar is defined by a central portion and a head portion. The central and head portions preferably have an elliptical shape with the central portion slightly greater in size. The central portion and the head portion are deformed from their elliptical shapes to substantially round shapes to securely fasten the collar and bolt. The central portion advantageously generates a predetermined preloaded tension between the collar and the nut. The head portion locks the collar and bolt together because it is swaged or deformed into recesses on the threads of the bolt. A tool is used to secure the collar on the bolt.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1990Date of Patent: September 8, 1992Assignee: Air Industries, Inc.Inventor: John Wallace

Patent number: 5092726Abstract: Wrenching lobes of an internally threaded nut are separated by circumferential, tapered walls so that the lobes and contiguous portions of the walls deform in radial compression upon reaching a predetermined preload and displace radially inwardly while the central portions of the walls deform radially outwardly, but do not interfere with the tool that sets the nut.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1989Date of Patent: March 3, 1992Assignee: VSI CorporationInventors: Roland A. Patent number: 4983085Abstract: A fastening assembly includes a bolt and a malleable fastener. The bolt has a head at one end and either threads or circumferentially extending grooves adjacent the other end. The bolt further includes a plurality of axially extending grooves located on the bolt between the bolt head and the threads or circumferentially extending grooves. The malleable fastener is capable of being swaged from an initial state to a swaged state. In the initial state the fastener is essentially shaped as a hollow collar having an outside surface and an interior surface with the collar sized and shaped to freely slide over the bolt. In the swaged state the interior surface of the collar intimately contacts and irreversibly locks against both axial and rotational movement with respect to the bolt by assuming a complementary shape to the bolt about both the axial grooves and the threads or the circumferentially extending grooves.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1989Date of Patent: January 8, 1991Assignee: Northrop CorporationInventor: Warren E. Patent number: 4806054Abstract: A male threaded fastener has a plurality of impressions on the nonload-bearing flank of the thread that receives material swaged from a collar to lock the collar and pin together and increase the breakaway torque of the collar. The impressions have a depth of about 0.1 to about 0.3 of the depth of the thread from root to crest. The thread is free of impressions at least 1.5 pitch lengths from its ends.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1988Date of Patent: February 21, 1989Inventor: Jack Rath

Patent number: 4682520Abstract: Disclosed is a mechanically lockable fastener assembly for maintaining workpieces assembled, when an elongated bolt with threads formed along a length thereof, and substantially axially aligned rotation resisting surfaces formed along another length thereof, is mechanically assembled with a cooperating nut having a threaded portion and a compressible portion deformable into engagement with said rotation resisting surfaces of said bolt to cause the bolt and the nut of the assembly to be inseparable by untorqued unthreading.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1984Date of Patent: July 28, 1987Assignee: Northrop CorporationInventor: Warren E. Patent number: 4649727Abstract: Disclosed is a rotatably drivable tool for mechanically joining together threaded nut and bolt components of a fastener assembly to maintain together the assembly and workpieces joined thereby, the tool having a socket portion for receiving the nut of the fastener assembly, and swaging inserts spaced inwardly of the interior wall of the tool socket portion to compress a portion of the nut of the fastener assembly into mechanical engagement with the bolt of the fastener assembly upon driving of the tool.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1984Date of Patent: March 17, 1987Assignee: Northrop CorporationInventor: Warren E. Patent number: 4601623Abstract: A fastener system is disclosed comprising a nut having an axial bore provided with interior thread and a bolt having exterior thread for engagement with the interior bore of the nut. The nut has an end portion having an elliptical cross section for engaging a complementarily shaped driver. As the nut is tightened onto the bolt against a workpiece, resistance to further threading increases. When sufficient resistance to threading occurs, the driver will deform the elliptically shaped end portions of the nut, forcing material of the nut radially inward toward the axis of the nut. The portion of the bolt which engages the nut has a plurality of recesses for receiving the deformed material of the nut as it flows radially inward, thereby locking the nut, bolt, and workpiece together. The recesses of the bolt have a shoulder for abutting the deformed material to prevent unthreading of the nut from the bolt.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1982Date of Patent: July 22, 1986Inventor: John Wallace
